I'm not sure what h264 encoded movies are. You can shoot the company an email. They are quick to respond. That way you can see if the device will suit your needs. For me, it's just so easy to have all my photos and documents for work in one place and easy access to all of them. I use Windows at work and Apple products for personal use. But with the Airstash, I have access easily from both. In a small meeting or training session, I can also allow access to up to 8 others. Also, I live in NH and we still have a lot of areas with poor cell phone service. So with the family we can be out and about (with no service or wifi) taking photos with our phones and then are able to share via Airstash.
H.264 is essentially an MPEG 4 in hd. Rather great compression without losing much quality at all.

I guess my question is, if you have a video (of any kind), does it play at all? Or is this more for documents and such? If it does play, does it play through native apple apps or does all media go through the air stash app?

I have songs, apps, photos and videos of my loved ones. Yeah it's pretty damn important to me so don't assume what I "need" on my phone.

If your idea of having precious mementos of loved ones and media stored safely is by having a single copy of these items on your iPhone, you're in for a rude awakening iif your device is damaged or stolen. Having routine backups, not necessarily 128GB of storage, is the answer to your "need" here.

As someone who experienced what a headache and PITA it is to manage storage constantly on a 32GB iPhone 5, it is absolutely worth it for me to get 128GB and not have to worry about maintaining free space on my 6+.

I want to have instant access to all my music, pictures, and video without having to worry about the network dependency involved in accessing the cloud (reception, data speeds, data usage/overages, etc).

I agree. It was a play on words that was taken too far, although you seem to agree with me ;)

With 16 I would always delete stuff. Then I had a 32 5s and it was perfect. Opted for 64 this time. No issues. I don't need all my music on my phone

Do you seriously think I'm dumb enough to have it only stored on my 64GB iPhone? I have two externals and obviously that means two backups plus I also keep a copy on my MacBook. I just happen to also like having a copy on my phone.
