Thats why a company like TJ MAXX can purchase them wholesale and sell them for 50$ less and make a tidy profit. yeah that sounds about right.

Now, that's not Apple's figures, that's a research company, could be more or less. In fact, it says "could be AS LITTLE AS" which tells me it might be more. Either way, that's really not much compared to what most retail markups are, ESPECIALLY considering the engineering that went into it.
Steve Jobs said that TJ Maxx was not an authorized reseller, though that was his only response to those prices. My guess is they took a loss or perhaps that literally IS the wholesale price (or close to it, consumers are more likely to buy something ending in a 4, 7 or 9 according to market research companies, so they would round up to X49.99 or X79.99 etc. if at all possible)
Apple was clear that their strategy when it comes to the iPad was to get it in peoples hands. Because of AT&T being so aggressive that they could sell a near $900 handset that consumers would buy for $300. With the iPad, they want to price it aggressively because they want it to be in peoples hands, to buy apps in the app store, to buy accessories from the Apple store, etc. Yes, they are gonna make money off of it, but they only need to make a few bucks after covering the costs of R&D and sell something like 18 bazillion in 80 minutes or whatever.
