Really? All features they boast the Xoom have that the iPad doesn't... and they're "coming soon"?

Anyone see the irony in this?

Nope.

The difference is that Motorola has said that the Xoom will get a working SD slot, HD video, and Flash player.

What are the odds of the iPad2 getting all of those?

Remember when there would never be an SD card slot on a MacBook Pro?

and I don't have an iPad, but I'm assuming it can play back 720 (which no matter what elitists say, is still HD).

Just take the SD card out of your Ipad... Oh wait:cool:

I could get a camera connection kit if needed. Nope iPad didn't come with a SD card slot, and I didn't pay for one either. But I can if I want.

Video/Movies in proper format, without bits cut off, will be physically larger on the Xoom screen won't they?

Always seems a shame to lose so much screen to giant black bars top and bottom on the iPad, and only having about 500 pixels of vertical resolution for even a 16:9 movie, or even less pixels than that on other movies.

97% of what I do doesn't involve watching widescreen movies. Beside, I'll take the better screen with black bars any day. Doggone shame a $429 (in my case a $599) device has a better screen than $799 device.

If you don't buy Doritos, what else do you buy? I'm sure there are others, but most just buy Doritos.

The iPad is Doritos and will be for a long long time. Yes, a product can dominate a category, let's stop pretending these pieces of trash will compete.

how can you even say that, it is a worthy ipad competitor.

The Xoom has a (currently non-working) MicroSD adapter, not a SD slot. The Xoom still requires an external device to do what the iPad card reader does: reading images off a SD card from a camera, except that the Xoom doesn't even have such accessory available.

HD video recording is pretty much guaranteed on the iPad since even the lowly iPod Touch camera is 720P. HD playback also should be available on the iPad through various revenues, even including 3rd party players like the OPlayer. (On a sidenote I also wonder if it's partially a Tegra2 issue. The LG 2X phone which uses the Tegra2 has some problems playing back some HD videos. Not sure about other devices that use that chip, anyone?)

That's almost mind blowing. At that price I at least expected Motorola to get the best IPS display they could get their hands on, but they couldn't even match the aging iPad 1.

True, but Motorola does intend on making the slot available after they square things out with Google, and the SD card slot will be storage expansion, not just for downloading photos. The iPad is pretty limited in its usage here, comparitively.

Technically the Wifi Xoom 32 GB is $600, which is comparable, though not available yet. I think the $800 model is also comparable (minus the fact it's $79 more expensive, minus the fact it requires a contract if you want 3G).

Regarding the display, I'm not sure about quality, but the aspect ratio is cheaper for Motorola, but I suspect not an optimal experience especially in Portrait.

Just got back from best buy and the Xoom was underwhelming. Sluggish performance. Screen just didn't seem to be that responsive. I didn't thin the quality of the images and video were that great either.

I'll stick with the iPad for now.

sluggish performance??? I've read many reviews and no one mentions sluggish.

Not really, the Xoom's microSD card slot cannot take the standard SD cards usually used for digital cameras so for most cameras it cannot download photos at all. If you want to download pictures from your camera's SD card, with the iPad you can use the accessory to do it but with the Xoom you cannot do it at all since there isn't even a reader available.

I guess you could use microSD in a microSD-to-SD adapter on your camera, but not only that's relatively fragile and awkward,(microSD is a nightmare in the field if you're trying to handle it) the speed/cost/capacity is compromised.

Some reviews indicated the brightness and contrast are noticeably inferior on the Xoom against the iPad's screen. I personally also prefer the iPad ratio but I suppose there are people who really really hate black bars in movies.

I think the sluggish performance relates directly to how much "extra" stuff the device is running. I used a Xoom for a good long while the other day and for the most part it was not as responsive as the iPad... so, I went into the settings and turned a bunch of the "special" honeycomb features off. Then the Xoom was pretty responsive, maybe even more responsive than iPad 1.0

What is the point of the honeycomb features if they worsen the experience?

What we were discussising was reviews and other posters say the Xoom's screen is not as good as the current iPads. For example, buy a $429 iPad from Apple, and it has a better screen than the $799 Xoom. And that's a doggone shame

I just returned mine and the screen is inferior. It's washed out compared to the iPad and viewing angles aren't good. I didn't realize it until I tested the xoom, but I can see why apple has this screen size. The wide angle of the xoom is only good for movies and that's it. Surfing the web and reading both are compromised.

Just checking... did you check to see what apps were running in the background? I am sure with the demo apps users are just leaving a bunch of processes running behind the scenes. But that being said, I am sure the OS probably doesn't scale very well when there are a lot more widgets present.

As noted in the Engadget review, they had to drop out of the auto-brightness mode to fix the brightness. Also, I have always found Best Buy locations to have poor lighting to judge LCDs and such outside the Magnolia areas.

Does the Xoom have an IPS screen?

It does not have an ips screen. I compared them both side to side at home.

<snip>

why wouldn't the xoom owner just use the usb cable that comes with digital cameras for uploading the pictures to pcs?

That is actually very disappointing... That would explain some of the screen "inferior" perceptions people are having.

It does not require a contract for 3G it is month to month unless you buy it on contract for $599.

Does it matter? Background running processes should not impact the performance. And what's that about "when you need a task manager, you failed"?

how can you even say that, it is a worthy ipad competitor.

Depends on which part you consider worthy I suppose. After using it, I didn't get the impression that the screen of the Xoom was a worthy competitor. The number of apps available certainly aren't worthy, and the Apple integration, if that is important to you, wasn't even close to the iPad.

Speaking in terms of sheer hardware, overall, yes, it most certainly is worthy to the iPad, but with respect to versatile functionality, I don't think so. At least not yet.
