I successfully goldplated the applewatch!

You can gold plate the stainless steel link bracket too?

it is possible but not straight to the stainless steel - it wont stay on it. a common method is to do Woods nickel "preparation" at first. then inserting the object to the gold bath to plating it.

I don't like it all. But have to say that I do not like golden watches as such. To bragging for me, but well made....

Does the coating wear off easily? Especially considering the Milanese mesh rubbing

Yes. Gold plate is very thin and temporary. Body oils dull that shiny finish pretty quickly, too. For something like a watch/band that you're wearing all day, every day, it's going to look pretty tacky pretty fast. Just sit back and wait a month or so before you jump on this bandwagon and see how many satisfied customers are still around.

Sometimes you need to use a little common sense. If it were really this easy to turn cheap metals into solid gold, don't you think everybody would be doing it? To tell you the truth, you could make a DIY trickle plating setup yourself without much trouble at all. I made one for a science project when I was a kid back in the Dark Ages when John Cameron Swayze was advertising for Timex.

We can do black chrome. I have my personal 42mm milanese ss coming soon, and i'm going to do a black chrome band and gold face. More masculine in my opinion.

Black and Gold finally :) I may consider this and let you know.

Too true. That confirms my suspicion then. Especially with an entirely metal band.

Gold isn't my thing, but man you did awesome on that. They should offer a titanium version, granted it would probably cost as much as the gold or more. Bare Ti is always a nice sight to see IMHO.

This looks very nice. But I'm confused. I thought people around here thought gold was tacky. Now it's apparently not?

Anyway I would be wary about doing this since it basically invalidates your warrant/AppleCare. So if something goes wrong with the watch you're basically screwed.

Does plating the watch add any discernible thickness? I'd potentially be interested, but I think it's important to know this.

No, not at all. The layers of gold are measures in microns. You couldn't possibly notice.

I'm going to be adding many of these questions from this thread to the FAQ questions on the site. I'll go through a bit later and answer them one by one

Just checking in -- how is you wife's watch holding up? No issues with sensors or speaker or mic after the plating? No chipping?

Also, did the Paypal rebate for forums members get removed? Was just about to purchase but want to confirm rebate.

I added myself to his mailing list on watchplate.com, and I got the email today saying we have until midnight. I'm actually somewhat desperately waiting for him to PM me for a slight special case so I can get it in on time, but based on that email that went around, yes the deal is on for another hour.

He's in LA, so I suspect you have just under 4 hours. BUT I'm just guessing.

A quick shout out: don't give the run around on warranty status on your website. Gold plating your watch counts as modification which will not only void your warranty but any service Apple provides. I would be honest and up front with that.

Other than that good luck on this new business venture - that watch looks great!
