I think people will need to eventually adapt to these changes, just as we did with 3.5” > 4” > 4.7” > 5.5” > 5.8” > 5.4” (minis) > 6.1” > 6.5” > 6.7” and soon to be going into 6.9”.
Someday, when the smallest screen offered is 7" we will finally see the return of our beloved mini with a tiny screen size of 6.1 inches! People will think we're nuts for wanting one.

I think you're right. Same thing happened with TVs. I remember buying my first 32" widescreen TV in the nineties. That thing seemed HUUUUUGE. Today, it would be considered a portable. Ditto the 40" I bought to replace it a decade later (still going strong, 18 years on). Today no one seems to be buying anything less than 50". Over the years the manufacturers have conditioned us into accepting an ever-increasing size as the standard. Where will it end? Phones the size of TVs, and TVs the size of movie screens? Crazy.

Maybe so, but the mini/ SEs were a market enough Apple could have combined them. Problem being as tech increases, these small phones can’t hold the internals. Not until things like batteries get small and hold more charge, or camera lenses that I don’t think they will ever get small enough to fit in a mini size.
One would think that technical advances would reduce overall power consumption, but it seems rather the opposite.

There are still many 32" and 24" TVs on the market, and on Amazon you can even find some 22", 17" and 14" TVs. It's also not a good analogy because those aren't mobile devices.

I want to believe you but I can't. It's 30C here and my 12 mini is going crazy. It wont even charge due to the temperature.

I camped in the Trilobite Wilderness for a few nights . . . it was still ~38C @ Midnight, trending down to about 30C at sunrise.

Was combing shale for trilobites primarily, but I also was there to catch some Dark Sky/Milky Way/Perseids :)

Charged the phone at night with an imuto X6L Pro (both laying on bare rock).

It's been a while since I had my 12-mini; the 13-mini did get warm, but I had no problems using it.

The 13-mini is obviously not designed for advanced Astrophotography ;)

Scaled Kelso Dunes in 43C (had to self-check myself a few times on the ascent to make sure I was not going to die (absolutely nobody else within 30km)).

I carried plenty of iced water.

~200m in elevation, but to scale it @45deg of slope took many hours.

It was very windy atop . . . 35-40kts in cycles (which helped make it more than lovely).

Just gotta say, I'm loving the selfie shots!

i plan to go from the Pro Max to the ‘normal’ Pro. I came from the Mini, I guess i just like the one handed approach, so the max, although a very nice big screen where I can do admittedly more things on it, doesn’t alow my hands to operate with one hand which seems to be something I like to do. The 13 mini was great for that.

Just before I drove-down the second-most harrying road on this trip:

After the first "2WD on a 4WD road" mistake (another Story, for another Time), I took another . . . "Cadiz Rd from CA-62 to CA-66 (National Trails Highway)" . . . 50+mi of rock, dust and sand . . . quite beautiful, but not a road I would again travel without 4WD.

No cellular signal, and 43C . . . 13-mini took it all in, no prob.

Wow. Changed a lot since the rollout of the iPad mini.

I have the 15pro but had the 13mini sitting in a drawer. Decided last night to swap back and try it out. My lord this this is so much better. The only reasons I went with the 15pro were the camera and I swear there’s a defect in the mini where it overheats and drains the battery. I do think the newer iOS has maybe addressed that. I love the lighter weight and smaller form factor. If this thing had the camera of the 15pro I’d have paid whatever for it to be in the mini. I guess I’ll keep the 15Pro around for when I want the camera. Such a shame we can’t get a pro level mini. It was never a price point issue for me. I don’t know anyone that uses that weird fisheye wide lens anyway.
Funnily enough I have both the 13 mini and 15 pro max. I actually don’t find the images from the pro max to be noticeably better quality than the mini.

Yeah the zoom is there, but for normal pics I don’t think I could tell which is which in a ‘blind’ test.

I actually think in a certain sense that the older iPhone pics can look less processed which is better I think. To be honest though, the photos between the 2 just look pretty similar to me.

I took a load on both iPhones as well as a little Sony RX100 VII the last few days and the quality bump from the actual camera is very large even though it’s a tiny pocket camera.

I know it’s not the point of this thread, but I think the quality of iPhone images peaked around the iPhone 13 Pros. I don’t think it’s any better today.

My nephew is a professional photographer and he says that lens size is more critical than uber megapixels. If he’s correct, smartphones are close to maximum lens size, and have been since the 13 series, which would explain your observation that photo quality has plateaued.

At the risk of forking this discussion too much, I rarely look at my photos except on small format hardware such as phones, tablets, and laptops. My wife still likes photo albums from Walgreens, but rarely makes 8x10s.

I use the ultra wide angle constantly.
Me too. I had the 13 mini and the 15 pro max, the pictures were indeed great, but because i like to use the ultra wide, it didn’t make a huge difference. So if the rumors are true, i look forward for a substantial lens upgrade of the ultrawide in 16 pro.

Instead of carrying two mostly identical devices, you can replace one of them with an actual real camera. Something like used Fuji X-A5 with compact 27mm lens.

Just saying!

You guys with 13 mini and 15 pro max , gonna dive into any iPhone 16 model? Or staying put with the combo?

Do you eSIM swap between devices or use the 13 mini as your main device and pro max for around the house or what’s your use case?
