My golden rule is also to never to buy a first 'edition' anything. I only broke it after playing around with a brand new 21.5" iMac at Best Buy and I feel in love with the machine. Apple's customer service has been great for the most part. My biggest issue is with Apple’s quality control. I received an iMac where the power cord wouldn't fit into the back of the machine, another one where I could visually see dust inside the screen while the machine was on or off. I really hope Apple straighten these issues out. A customer should be confident that what’s in the box they purchase is a machine meets their expectations. I'm going to cool down for a couple weeks and revisit purchasing a new computer. I'm still not sure how I can brooch the subject with Apple that I want to purchase one of their machines that is dust free, parts plug correctly into it, working power supply, no stuck bright pixels in the middle of the screen, etc...

Thanks for your comments, they are well taken.

Having had a similar but never, ever ...EVER !! buy a first 'edition' anything...
It took me a long while to get my issues rectified to a

IMHO they have improved over the last year or so with cst srvc ... thank goodness say I !! the PPC - intel transition period was a nightmare
good luck and remember keep calm , be straight an they'll sort it, ask for an escalation to customer relations also, it helps, log al calls etc .

Giving the iMac a pass... for now...

I have decided to give the iMac a pass for right now. I read of too many problems with the new iMac units and it gets me real nervous about buying one. I think a Mini 2.66 and with 8GB of ram and a 7200 RPM 500GB HD ought to do the trick for me. I can do the memory and HD upgrades myself.

Apple has really blown for me having any confidence in the quality of their products. Now I will take a "wait and see" approach just like any other vendor.

Ditto, six machines is unbelievable!

Yeah. Everything on the internet is real.

Especially when:

If 10% of Apples had issues, then the chances of getting six in a row with them is one in a million.

Exactly. And somehow certain people never saves any paperwork that shows their "troubles." For all you know, the trouble could be caused by someone now knowing how use anti-static protection:

After many trials and tribulations, I finally have a keeper 27” iMac i5. I’ve ordered an extra 4Gb of ram and I have few questions about the upgrade process. Does the ram slide straight in or is it the kind you put in at an angle and push down to lock? How much force does it take to click the ram in? Do I really need to flip the machine over onto its face or can I tilt it back to access the ram slots? Any advice is appreciated since this is my last big hurtle.

I bought an i7. When the third time was not the charm, I sent it back for a refund. Now, I'm just holding out for these new hexacore Mac Pros.

Just a thought....

Long, long story short I purchase an iMac on Nov. 1st and since then I've been a serial of issues, problems, and machines. I'm on iMac number six which has an issue with sleep mode. Since I received the machine 13 days ago it's had an issue where does not wake up from sleep mode. The system fan comes on however the machine never fully turns on. To bring the machine back up I have to cycle the power using the power button. This issue has happened seven times. I called up Applecare and worked with a technician who diagnosed it as a hardware issue. He had me reformatted my system and reset the pram, etc... He said the machine should be replaced since it was brand new. I've been working with Apple executive customer care so I called them up with this information and case number. The customer representative immediately said Apple will not replace anymore systems for me and I could either take it in for service or get a refund. In the past I've gone down the service route with bad results. I wasn't even set on having the machine replaced since I'm happy with it in every other way. My impression is that Apple has given up on me. Anyone have any comments, suggestions, or advice for me?

Have you had any other issues with electrical appliances in your house? Is your house new or recently remodeled? If so you may want to be aware of a serious issue that people are having with drywall manufactured in China. It has a chemical in it that releases vapor into the atmosphere and is highly corrosive to alloy based wiring and pipes. Please be aware. I know it seems silly but I only point it out because of so many repeated issues with a new computer. You would likely experience similar issues with other electronics.

Just a thought.

Time for a break from Apple I think.

Guys, not flaming here, but it does irritate me to have a company which such ads as they have and yet have some of the problems they do. I must say it's really hit or miss with Apple. I mean REALLY MISS sometimes. I've seen more motherboard or "logic board" replacements on Macs over the past six years than on all other computers combined (BY FAR). Then again, my iBook G4 is perfect as it ever was... which is to say, it's still slow (it was always a little slow) but no slower today than 6 years ago (can't say the same for Windows machines, they're slower today than they were).

In terms of sleep issues, I had TONS of problems on my Dell Latitude from like 2005 or so, and they were software related. Bad corporate copy of slipstreamed of XP... finally installed XP from scratch and no more sleep issues ever.

You know, in terms of Desktops... I must say that I don't quite get the issue. You have so many options with PCs. I'd go with a tower that goes on the floor and get a nice, decked out display... why not an LED Apple display for that matter? Just saying, for example. Or a wide-gamma Dell display... the really pro stuff, there's a 24" and 27" available. Again, I see where you'd have issues getting inspired at the store ... but really when at home, it comes down to a great monitor, good speakers, and a keyboard and mouse you like.

I'd try hard not to get a Mac after the experiences you're describing. Windows 7 is really quite good too. I have two Dell desktops less than 2-years old and they've been absolutely flawless. They're just ordinary Inspirons... well, one is a Quad-Core but it's just as ordinary. Great desktops... hands down. My best friend has a Mac Mini, and it has loose USB ports...

Just saying...

I've had sleep issues with my iMac running Leopard. Usually I have to move the mouse and hit the space bar a few times but it usually comes back on. I did set it to never hibernate and believe that it just goes into 'sleep mode' instead.

Oddly, I have had it not wake up but so far that has happened only with Dreamweaver CS4 running which caused a loss of some work on a project. No idea why Dreamweaver would cause it to not wake up.

It appears, through my use, that sometimes the sleep/wake cycle can take nearly or over a minute but it usually does wake up.

As for the Windoze compliment, I have had notebooks more than desktops have an issue with sleep and always turn hibernation off due to the amount of programs that still throw temper tantrums when hibernate kicks in. I also turn off the drive spin down too. (I've heard that early Vista had major hibernation issues on some hardware)

I do, back to the Mac sleep issue, feel that most of my issues are to do with the external drives that I have connected. I have an older Seagate 'toaster' style external that seems to sleep at odd times and then takes anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds to spin back up. The iMac appears to wait for it to spin up when it sleeps and doesn't become available until it's spun up. The other Seagate unit that I have seems to spin up quicker and not sleep so soundly... It bugs the crap out of me sometimes when the darn thing takes so long to wake up. The Dreamweaver connection has me stumped....

Apple did release an update for waking from sleep for Leopard a while ago...
