*Skip to the bottom if you don't want to read my novel. It lists the oddities when buying this iMac.*

Background

I saw an ad for an iMac Core 2 Duo 17', at my college(animation degree) for $400 last week. I thought "Good deal". I called the number listed & got ahold of a guy that I knew from the college, let say his name is "Mike". Mike does smoke pot but has never been rude so I don't care what he smokes.

He told me that the iMac belonged to a friend of his that he is helping to sell. Mike told me the iMac ran fine, but there were no OS disks. Also the keyboard was missing 2 keys(Caps lock/F9) & the mouse was pretty unusable. The iMac did have a few cosmetic scratches to the finish but nothing that was damaging.

So I told him I was interested in buying the iMac. A keyboard & mouse can be replaced easily. Mike called up his friend who said he would bring it by the college in 20 mins. So I went out to an ATM & got the money.

When the guy arrives he sets up the computer so that I can test it out. Nothing seemed wrong with the machine. I checked the "About this Mac" & saw that the ad listed the wrong machine. Strange. The iMac was really a Core Duo(first Intel iMac). That made me pause for a bit, but I had already checked ebay listings for both types of iMacs. At the time they were both selling for $700 or more.

The guy begins to tell me that it was his girlfriends computer, but that she didn't want it anymore. He also said he just wanted to get rid of it quickly & didn't want to spend time on an ebay auction. Odd. I check the computer out a little more & found nothing blatantly wrong, so I agree to buy it.

I get the iMac home & begin to look more deeply into the system. This was at night, so the Apple store in my area is closed. I find about 100 songs, all heavy rock, some porn, & few pictures taken with iSight in the last 5 days, but that is about it. Nothing was in the Address Book & I didn't find any other contact info.

When I tried to change some settings, I got the User Name & Password box. The name listed was Spike. The guy that sold me the computer has a name starting with a "B" & he told me it was his G/F's computer. Odd. But ok.

I called Mike back & asked if his friend knew the password. Mike said the guy didn't know about a password when asked & told Mike to tell me to just reinstall the OS. He said to just use my G5 OS disks or download the OS. Now I know that Intel Tiger is not available for sale & I wasn't about to steal the OS. But Mike's friend kept insisting that I just reinstall over 7 over.

So anyway I go to the Apple store the next day & get the iMac refresh for free. I know a guy there. I didn't get the OS disks, just a refreshed OS. But after thinking about all that happened I get the feeling the iMac was stole.

I know girls can have names like Spike, & look at porn, & listen to heavy metal/rock but it didn't feel like a feminine machine. The pictures were of guys & girls taken from the iSight. Did they just find out about Photo Booth?

What can/should I do? Anyone else have an idea. If it is stolen then someone is out a thousand & an iMac. i live in Boca raton, Fl so this iMac could have come from anywhere along the coast. There was no work related/personal files that I found but they could have been deleted before I bought it.

Oddities,

Price $400. (Cheap for an 1st gen. Intel iMac)
Guy didn't even know the correct computer type. (listed in an ad)
Guy didn't know about a password even though the account name listed is Spike. (Guy's name started with a "B")
No OS disks.
Scratches all over casing. (iMac was handled quite roughly)
Persistent in telling me to reinstall the OS.
Pictures were all taken within the past week using Photo Booth.
The computer didn't have a g/f touch to it. (Even though I was told it as a g/f's iMac)

people are stupid. "B"'s gf probably knew nothing about it and wanted some money to buy pot. (i have noticed pot smokers often hang out with other pot smokers (or worse)). "B" had been using the computer for a while along with his roommate "Spike" (who knows about macs and made the name but didnt tell anyone about it cause everyone else was too busy smoking pot(not to pick on pot smokers)). i could continue on with an odd story making the computer not sound stolen and make everyone in the story just sound ignorant about computers (which like 90% of people are). but here are a couple ways to see if its stolen. did it come with a power cord and original keyboard and mouse? often when someone is stealing a computer they just grab the computer and dont care about the cables. (if they are smart enough to grab all the cables and accessories, then they are probably smart enough to accurately advertise the computer.) the second thing to do if you want to be nice and honest is to call the campus police, ask if they have reports of stolen computers then if they have a report of a similar mac then check the serial numbers with them. thats like the best thing to do (aside from calling like every police department in the area). if there are no police reports then you likely just lucked out in buying a computer from people who dont know anything about computers!

It is obviously stolen...

My advice to you is to keep the machine and reinstall when leopard comes out. Don't mess with the sellers, that's the last thing you want to do. Maybe you should check out if keeping it is legal if you feel uncomfortable and then look into what other options you have.

You bought a machine you knew was likely stolen at the time, this thread will not help your trial if you get charged with knowingly purchasing stolen merchandise.

If it smells funny it is usually best to walk away.

If you don't expect the police to ever stumble upon it. Use it, then throw it away after destroying it when you are done with it.

I don't know if it is/was stolen. How am I to "know" if is stolen? I didn't even think that it could be stolen till I brought it to my apartment for a more in depth look.

After reviewing what happened I just thought it looked really suspicious & needed a second opinion.

I highly doubt the police will show up at my door asking Q's.

WTF DOES POT SMOKING HAVE TO DO WITH THIS BEING STOLEN?

the added note about "he smokes pot" was stupid, honestly, whats the point?

like it had anything to do with "stealing" an iMac

if it IS/WAS stolen, and registered to someone. IF/WHEN that person calls the police about it being stolen, and time passes, eventually it may come to you and you will have to give it back, though you probably get no jail-time or anything, you dont get your $400 back. Receiving stolen goods IS ILLEGAL, not knowing gives you some cover, but it doesnt give you a refund!

Stuck in the middle with you
Are you able to track this seller down again or is he gone with the wind? If you can find him again, it's worth at least checking the serial number with apple and the police department from wherever the seller lives.

LOL....well, I suppose the assumption would be that since these pot smokers are criminals, and possession is a crime in most states, then they might be inclined towards other criminal activity to finance their drug habits

well then, maybe the assumption was that the pot smokers might have been so stoned that they accidentally sold their friend Spike's computer instead of the gf's computer

Take it back and get your money back. Distract them by playing "Dark Side of the Moon".

Very funny!!! Hey, this does work though- If I wanted to get something past my roommate in college this was what I actually did- instantly he would close his eyes  and start tripping no matter whether he was on something or not a the time!

 <---This is what he looked like when he was looking for munchies!

I agree- hot iMac...I will give you $450...profit, you gotta make a profit!!!:D

Look, pot smoking IS illegal, and just because "everyone does it" doesn't mean it's legal. I was reenforcing the fact that is guy has a background in illegal activities. I know not all pot smokers are bad. I wasn't attacking anyone here who smokes dope. I don't know anyone here personally. So I won't assume anything about everyone else who does dope. I could really care less what he smokes, like is said before.

I have tried to contact the seller but he hasn't/won't pick up my calls. So I am just going to keep the iMac. If the police show up, O well. I will be out $400 & an iMac. I bet that will never happen.

do we even know WHY its illegal

Because more important people than you think it should be.

It does effect the short term memory for a few days after it is smoked though and can cause mental ilnesses like schizophrenia if smoked from an early age. It does have some bad characteristics to it
