Yup. I regretting getting the white one. I went for the no smudges, no scratches approach but pretty much I didn't like the white as much as I thought I did.

That and it started randomly shutting off and it became non responsive to any buttons even doing the Home + Wake button trick--nothing helped it.

I had an appointment today but I realized that they had black 16GB's in stock and I was still within the 14 day return policy to return/exchange with NO restocking fee.

The only catch was I had to wait like everyone else in a hilariously huge line :/, whatever

Oh, I'll try to get a picture of the "filler" for you guys, it's hard to tell in person but it's there. I think the flash on a camera + macro will show it better.

so, i have a question. i went into my apple store today to switch from my white 16gb to a black 8gb (to save $100 for space i'll never use) and i was told i could not exchange, if i did i would have to pay full retail for the new 8gb!!!! they said that i had "already used" my upgrade that i would have to return it for a full refund and go to at&t and buy one!! WTH!!! what do i do?????

seems like you went in and got an exchange without a hitch! how did it work?? thanks!

Nevermind LOL

Sounds like that douche didn't want to do it

You are entitled to an exchange or return if you are within your 14 day return time frame. The freakin' phone came out on the 11th so no one broke their return policy until the 25th!

Go back there and yell at them. You don't want that iPhone you want an 8GB.

All they do is just scan the original receipt and rescan the new phone and ask you for your info again (last four of your social, home address, rate and plan) and they should either give you a brand new in box and let you go home and activate it (like me) or they might activate it in the store.

Get your exchange! That's bulls**t, there isn't even a restocking fee! The dude today was trying to get me to pay 10% and I told him I didn't open it, they did.

In my case, it was a little complicated, and quite honestly, the Apple Store folks didn't quite know how to handle it at first.

They ended up doing the following:

1. Return the 16 GB, credit your card for the full amount.
2. The Apple Store employees create an Apple gift card for the difference between the price for a 16 GB and the (subsidized) price for an 8 GB.
3. Ring up the 8 GB at the unsubsidized price (because AT&T takes 24-72 hours to put your upgrade eligibility back on the account after making a return), then use the gift card to bring the price back down the subsidized amount.
4. Voila. You pay the subsidized price for the 8 GB.

I'm not sure if this how they were "supposed" to handle it, but that's what they did to make it work out. How they're going to reconcile ringing up several hundred dollars on a gift card, I'm not sure...

I did ask them how they would handle a straight up exchange, instead of all this return business... and the guy told me it was only complicated because there was a refund involved since I was "downgrading" from a 16 GB -> 8 GB. So who knows. The way they did it seems to be the most complicated, insane way to making it work out, but that's what their manager told me to do. Very weird!

Any reason why you're "regretting" getting the white one?

White's a great color, no noticeable scratches and smudges. It just wasn't "my" color. I'm more of a black electronic guy. PS3, PS2, my TV, laptop, etc. Black just looked REALLY good to me with the chrome apple logo and the chrome bezel and buttons. It flows really well in MY eyes.

If there was a Navy blue iPhone it would be a wrap--no contest I'd get that one :D

Sealed and wrapped?

So today I exchanged my mega defective white iPhone for a black 16GB. It was still sealed and wrapped until I got home
Just curious, how did you manage that? Is that standard procedure when exchanging an already-activated iPhone 3G? I thought they would have opened it up and swapped your SIM card (possibly gouging up your SIM tray in the process).

I have a black 16GB with what looks like a speck of dandruff under the screen glass, and I was contemplating returning it (maybe even for a white), but I was hesitant if they were going to manhandle my replacement phone and play the SIM card shuffle.

Anybody else want to chime in on the Apple Store's exchange procedures?

I would suggest you do it if it's bugging you since you have 14 days and you can get a straight exchange before your time runs out and you're stuck with it.

Well the only catch to the whole thing is that you have to wait in line with everyone else buying an iPhone even if you're exchanging.

What they do is just return it and then scan the new iPhone box as an exchange. Then they ask for your info again to confirm (SSN, address, rate and plan you had, etc) and then they just hand your new iPhone :)

There is no SIM swap necessary. I left my white iPhone with SIM card inside and all and he just handed me a shrinkwrapped brand new black 16GB. He told me to just plug it into iTunes and activate it that way. I got home and it was activated within like 5 minutes. I don't get why don't they just sell them like this, seriously!

You just described the iPhone 16Gb white I got on July 11th. Trust me, they're out there. My phone came perfect.

Yup there are some out there. There were just a lot of shoddy made ones at launch pretty much. Nothing huge like broken LCD's and such just not fully polished.

I think they're rollin' out the good ones now ;)

Dude, the majority of release Iphones don't have problems. Just because 15-20 people post in here about some issues doesn't nearly mean out of the million they sold, the majority were bad. That's just a silly misinformed statement.

Just wanted to say that I had a similar experience.

I originally purchased a white iPhone; got it home and found the build quality to be pretty bad, especially compared to my original iPhone. Light leaking out of the left side, rough edges around the bezel, etc.

A few days later, I decided that I really couldn't stand the white in addition to the "defects" bothering me, so I returned it to the Apple Store and exchanged for a 8 GB black.

And guess what? No light leaks, edges are smooth, it really does feel better! It's strange, but I know exactly what you mean. And I'm quite happy with it!

yup i can confirm this as well. i got a white 16GB on launch day and got cracks in the plastic case within days. i also had rough edges between the plastic backing and the metal ring that goes around the phone. i took it in today and had it replaced... new one is perfect.

but mac genius said this to me: "typically we classify this as cosmetic damage and that's not covered in the warranty blah blah blah. but we're going to make an exception this time." whatever man... i just shelled out $300 for this thing and i think i'm entitled to a "cosmetically" perfect phone like him and everyone else.

aside from the "cosmetic damage" guilt trip they tried to lay on me it was painless. i didn't even have to show a receipt. i agree with everyone else... if it's bugging you now get it replaced ASAP because eventually it'll REALLY bother you.

you paid at least $300 for that sucker and you're entitled to a perfect phone. don't settle for less brother. do you think steve jobs would?

It looks like I am going to have to exchange mine again! This will be my third iPhone. I have 5 dead pixels and a battery that last about 3:30 hours. This is the first time I have bad luck with apple products. My girlfriend is on her third iphone too!

My condolences man. Damn, three times? Hopefully 3rd time's the charm.

Do you check the phone out before you leave the store?

The first time I didnt. I've always had good luck with apple products and it didnt even dawn on me to do that. The second one (which I have now) I couldn't really because they just gave me a new one and said that should fix it. But you really can't check the battery till you start to use it. The dead pixels you fine once you have it more in your daily use.

Oh I have. I have it bookmarked. Even the genius guy gave me props for doing all my own trouble shooting. I swear they know me by name now. LOL. Between mine and my girlfriend, this will be number 6 for us.

With my luck, do you think I should wait another week to return the phone till they get a better "batch" withouth the defects?
