Absolutely no. And I'm getting a little tired of the canard, "Well, the iPad Pro has a stylus..." It doesn't. There is a completely optional and non-essential accessory called the Apple Pencil that works with the iPad Pro, but the iPad Pro does not require it and works perfectly well without it.

Look, I used to be a Palm user. I had Palm Pilots, Palm watches, Treo phones... I literally had combo stylus / ink pens in my pocket at all times. I don't want to do that again.

NO - There are many other things that Apple can do with its development time and resources. Plus if it didn't work with the iPhone 3 - there would be 30 threads about forced obsolesce and 40 more about how that ruined the experience.

Yea, boy I hated getting around a windows phone with a stylus!

You can use a stylus now if you want - just needs to be the rubber tipped type.
My kids use them all the time on their iPads for drawing and stuff.

... Samsung's Note series proves that a stylus with a smartphone is the perfect match and a susscess....

No it doesn't. There are many reasons why people choose the Note series which has nothing to do with the stylus. I know at least 2 people who chose it specifically for the larger screen size and ability to multitask. The industry trend has been to do away with the phone stylus.

I think that some of the other phones in the Samsung lineup are more popular than the note series, and certainly more successful as a product. The Edge comes to mind.

I'm completely happy with Apple's implied stance with the Pencil – the stylus is an optional, precision tool for those who want the technology to do optional, precision stuff. If that can be done on phones, that seems great too; no harm done.

It seems like some people are reflexively interpreting the original post to mean that the stylus would be required or replace multi-touch or something. I agree that wouldn't be good, but I don't think it's what was meant.

I see you're point and I'm not disagreeing with it, yet I know a fair number of people who opted for the Samsung note for one reason and one reason alone - the stylus. Now a handful of people don't make a statistical population but it does show that there is a desire out there. I honestly don't think apple will do it, but on the other hand I would not be surprised if they did

I really, really, really doubt that is true!
I haven't ever seen anyone actually use an S-Pen in the wild... I've only ever seen people use them when they're giving a brief demo, showing off how "cool" it is, NOT in actual use.
Testing my theory - I asked Google to confirm. Turns out... I'm right. A recent study shows that only about 22% of Note users use the S-Pen regularly, the other 78% is split between "use very occasionally" & "have only used a small handful of times".
People are buying the Note because it has an amazing screen & is the most high-end flagship Android phone, NOT because it has a stylus, lol.

When I had a note the only time I used it was to sign documents. Also, my above post was not inferring that a stylus on an iphone would be used to get around the OS but more that after using it on a phone in the past I really appreciate how well Apple made a phone that didn't need it when the first Iphone came out.

What people are forgetting is the Apple Pencil. The Apple Pencil is already a writing instrument on the iPad Pro. Nothing really has to change other then the display to support the Apple Pencil. I would love to see Apple shrink the Pencil to place in the Headphone jack, but that may not happen for a while. Samsung's Note series proves that a stylus with a smartphone is the perfect match and a susscess. It has done so for the last 5 years. In my opinion Apple created slide over, split view and the Apple Pencil because of Samsung's success. The smart keyboard is because of Microsoft.
Samsung Note a success? Exactly where ?

That's what I used to think, but there's actually a better solution if you need a stylus. I got a Jot Dash to use with some CAD and GIS apps on my iPhone 6s plus. http://www.adonit.net/jot/dash/

It has a fine point and the force touch screen on the 6s plus recognizes the amount of pressure you apply. I haven't used it much, and certainly wouldn't carry it around for "normal" iPhone use. But when you need to be precise, it's great.

It is not a passive device, if you don't turn it on then the phone doesn't recognize it. But it's not "talking" to the phone with bluetooth or anything. I guess some kind of electical charge is applied to the tip.

If I fell like I want to use a stylus, I pull out my Newton. Yes it still works.

After a few minutes with that, I am cured again, put it away for a few more years till I desire a stylus again.

A success compared to their Galaxy S series. The Galaxy S series since the S4 has been nothing short of a disaster and a failure with the S5 launching not far after the S4's launch. The Galaxy Note Series is Samsung's ultimate flagship crowned best phablet for years.

It's not the #1 "MUST HAVE" feature as Multi-Window and the 5.7" does the job. What I meant was that the S-Pen is just a simple stylus, but offers secondary software abilities not found on any smartphone.

NO since iPhones currently don't have the feature but YES once it gets it like the iPad Pro with Pencil. Same response as based on the past with >3.5" display, >1GB DRAM, etc.

The desire to have the additional features facilitated by using a stylus is a valid request. However, it does not fall in line with the Apple IOS philosophy, so I doubt very much that we will see it implemented in such a way. I think Force Touch is Apple's answer, and will be used to access some of these features. However, nothing will replicate "writing" on a device like a notebook. For most, it offers no benefit over just typing the information. Even during transactions in an Apple Store, you sign with your finger.

Digressing slightly, I agree that the Note series is often the reigning flagship device for Android. Unfortunately there are inherent problems with both Samsung's OS modifications (knox, touchwiz, etc.) as well as the hideous OS upgrade roadblocks caused by the carrier approval process, that have prevented it from even coming close to being an iPhone killer. Although I LOVED my highly customizable stereo speaker HTC M8 (except for the camera), I am so glad to be away from the Android nightmare. The bottom line is that I need a device that is reliable most of the time. Samsung/HTC/Android could not provide that for me.
