I think my Touch ID may be starting to fail

I had a similar issue but it was related to how I was placing my finger down on the sensor. I got into the habit of barely putting my thumb down and instead relying on just the top section. You really have to make sure you're putting the entire thumb down and covering the sensor to register. Ever since I started properly doing it, the issue has gone away. I will admit it was frustrating though at first when i didn't know what the issue was.

I can assure you that is not what is happening here.

A good judge of whether or not your placing your finger with enough pressure and properly position wise is how fast you get a successful scan. I've noticed that failing to put enough pressure on the home button results In A slower or no sucres rate. The same with the positioning of your finger

if you rebooted the phone.. the first entry must be manual code, no TID. also your TID setup may be bad, try to rescan your fingers. all possible angles (slightly sideways for me). I rescanned my finger with my most used angle unlocking the phone this and worked like a charm.

I am having the same problem, I plan on taking to apple, but here is a video I got when I was having this issue. https://db.tt/3EgygNBk It doesn't matter what finger (I know the video only shows me using my one) but right after you unlock it with the pass code, it works fine after it. So it isn't dirty because it would happen again. Also the phone was not just restarted or idle for 48 hours. I think it might be software, just starting to happen in 7.0.3, but if its hardware I want a replacement.

I have. It didn't seem to help.

You can also set up a second finger with yoursin finger. I have 2 right thumb scans. Just makes sure you go more extreme on the second. I find I get better results that way.

Yours isn't even registering. It should say try again if it's reading false.

I honestly just think people that are "having problems" with their touch ID for some reason just don't know how to properly use it. Which is puzzling because its so simple. Press the home button and hold, unlocks. You guys are probably not applying your finger evenly, or pulling away too fast, or something. Mine ONLY says "try again" when I put my finger on it at a weird angle and don't evenly make contact with the ring.

this is the issue that the entire thread supposed to be about. i dont know if i worded it poorly or what but tons of people seem to think i was just getting an error.

now if i can just track down your phone i know your password ;)

i have had the same issue where no attempt is made to read finger. but after inputting password it works fine again. Seems arbitrary. Might be when phone has been not active/used for a while

mine has happened within 30 seconds of just having used the touch ID.

I have had this happen to me three times in the last 48 hours. I watched your video and noticed that you unlocked your phone right to the twitter app. I then realized that every time this had happened to me I had unlocked to the twitter app and I had just downloaded the twitter app for the first time 3 days ago. It had never happened to me before three days ago. So I just now tried to replicate it by leaving the twitter app open and locking my phone and waiting for a few minutes. It took a few tries be but sure enough, I was able to replicate it without too much effort. I've uninstalled it for now and I'll try one of the other twitter apps in the mean time.

This has been happening to me very frequently as of late. It's not an issue of a misread finger or bad positioning or dirty hands or a reset – I literally cannot get a "Try Again" message fairly often.

it looks like you have some type of skin and screen protector?

I read this long thread with a bit surprise for I had no similar issue with my 5s. But I do use different way to unlock with TID: first I place my registered finger on button for about 1-2 sec (let it scan), then click button; it immediately enter lock screen for just half sec and enter home screen! The only drawback of this method is that it's so fast to pass lock screen, I always miss notifications and have to retrieve at home screen. Don't know if this is better way to unlock? Maybe guys like a try.

Hi, socbrian. I see the way you put your finger on the sensor may make a bit flaw: press and lift. Remember when register fingerprint, not only the center part, but also sides, top, bottom have to be covered for a 'successful' registration? So in the same sense, sensor would like to scan your 'whole' finger. I think the good way would be like: center-left-right-top-down in continuous move (no lift up). In practicality, the sensor may take only up to 3 parts of 5 to unlock. It's fast enough if one moves finger fast and smoothly. Put down and lift up finger 3 times would probably not work, also spend too much time. Make sense?

Count me as one of the 5s owners that is having the same problem.

Doesn't happen that frequently (about 5%-10% of the time). No "try again", no indication whatsoever that a finger is present even with pressing the home button. After unlocking with a passcode, the touch ID begins working again.

Started about a week ago. Not sure if it's a bug in 7.0.3 (if so, hopefully fixed in 7.1) or perhaps a hardware issue.

Right now, it's more of a nuisance than anything else, but if it gets worse or fails completely, I'll definitely return/exchange.

That is very interesting. Maybe something to do with twitter and 7.0.3. I too have twitter installed.

I am having the exact same issue. Touch ID was working great until maybe the past week or so. Every now and then when I try to unlock the phone it will get into a state like the OP explained where it won't read my finger print. By that I mean it won't even attempt to read it (no "Try Again" message). After I "Slide to Unlock" and type in my passcode and relock the phone it will again work for a while. It happened to me twice today. It isn't due to a dirty sensor as I wipe off the face of the phone a few times a day and keep my hands clean. I have even cleaned the TouchID sensor after it happens to be sire. Like I said, it was working just fine since Sept 25th (the day I got it) up until the past week or two. I have to wonder if it is related to the release of 7.0.3.

Were you using twitter?

I do have a screen protector, but it does not cover the ring around the home button at all. also I know I lift and put my finger back down, but any witch way you put your finger it does nothing.

I will have to notice if it is twitter that is open when it happens. I have an appointment with apple later today to get it replaced.
