This issue goes beyond just a tech issue and is (or is becoming) a larger political and social issue. Perhaps it’s time all news stories discussing the particular situation should be restricted like other different articles have been? Something to consider?

We've gone back and forth on this, and more recently we've been leaning toward leaving them in the regular news forum as it's a major topic of discussion and more focused around the privacy aspect of things rather than specifically political and social angles. There's obviously some bleed over from time to time, and more obviously political/social stories may still be restricted, but for now we're trying to keep the discussions as accessible as we can.

It's a hot topic with potentially heated discussions, but it's generally not delved into political realm, so leaving it open is preferable. If someone derails it with a pointedly political slant, then it should get reported / moderated.

I feel like it sits precariously between the two, and can tip over at any time. Yes, it is a “hot” and even divisive issue. The “Child Abuse” angle starts to make it a social issue (“If you’re not for this, you are supporting child abusers!”🙄), and as soon as politicians get involved, it becomes political (you’ve kept the German politician news story in the political issues sub-forum. What happens when/if the E.U. comes out against it, or U.K. MP’s, or U.S. Politicians who are the most divisive of all?). And the debated potential for totalitarian regimes, like China, or Russia, or some Islamic theocracy abusing this, and Tim Cook’s/Apple’s seemingly double standard on privacy when it comes to China, is completely U.S. political and geo-political. So, you do whatever you think is best 🤷‍♂️?

Literally any topic can have a political angle if one wants it to.

It’s a fools errand to try to contain that completely

With this topic what is relevant is just how big of an Apple story it is....political or not.

But that’s a typical low iq rhetorical trick to avoid having to deal with the arguments presented. Just because you have bad faith debaters doesn’t need the topic shouldn’t be debated, right?

Nobody said it “shouldn’t be debated“. Not sure how you came to that conclusion.

Offering phones at 64 GB, and then 256 GB without a 128 GB option inbetween, for example, does not have a politocal angle to it, so no, not “literally any topic“ can have a political angle to it. And it’s not about ”containing it” as in “trying to stop it from having a political angle” either. It’s about classifying it under the PRSI news sub-forum. However, it’s a bit of a moot point now. The more responses and interaction a news story gets, the better it is for MacRumors bottom line. Since this is a bIg Apple Story, garnering much debate, it’s in MacRumors‘ financial/advertising imterest, to keep it open. Just like where Apple is concerned, money always wins. MacRumors is a for profit business, after all.

So you're saying you want to censor people talking about it because you don't like the discussion about it which is overwhelmingly negative.. Are you a politician or activist?

Oh my God. This wasn’t about censorship. And it has nothing to do with the response to CSAM scanning being negative. I personally have a negative view on CSAM scanning. And this thread is done. There’s nothing left to discuss.

Moderators, just lock this thread already. Sheesh.
