I wouldn't exactly call it blaring.
And yes, I missed it. When I'm on my phone, my bookmark is for the forums, not the front page. It's odd that that model has 16GB and is missing the screws on the bottom. It could be basically the same early model from the leaked images on twitpic from February. Maybe before they got the larger chips. Unless it would be cheaper for them to just use 16/32/64 in one unit, to lower production costs now that it's a completely different model.

sorry didnt realise you were on your phone my bad!

yea i would hope for 3 models to be honest, it does make sense. That way they can keep the 16GB as the lower end model for those who can just scrape enough cash!

So? This prototype is running a plain simple OS. The one from Gizmodo appearently had 80 GB of storage, with OS 4.0 and other features.

Ever though about the fact that Apple isn't going to use more expensive products then necessary? Why would Apple produce one with 64 GB, when they can save money by using a 16 GB flash.

It will be like this:
iPhone 3Gs 16 GB - $99
iPhone 4G 32 GB - $199
iPhone 4G 64 GB - $299

OR (in case they actually are going to use the 16 GB for the 4G):

iPhone 3Gs 8 GB - $49
iPhone 4G 16 GB - $99
iPhone 4G 32 GB - $199
iPhone 4G 64 GB - $299

Personally I think they will not go for the $399 price tag, but I do think they keep the 3Gs as a low-end model, so the smartest thing for Apple is the second column ($49, $99, $199, $299) [least obvious] OR the first column ($99, $199, $299) [most obvious]. 3G will be discontinued. When they do a 3Gs model with 8 GB for $49 Apple can say something like "And because we want our product to be available for everyone, last year's model will now only start at $49!"

No problem, it's my bad too.
It's odd that some peoples posts show they posted from an iPhone, and some don't.
Maybe because I'm on wifi and others posted on the go over 3G?

Back to the phone. I find it 100% odd that a prototype is in Vietnam when the phone is designed in the US and built in China.

They said it was purchased w/ an iPad in the US.

That's because they use the regular site, like me. If you use the mobile site, you get that message at the top.

What's the mobile site url? I always use the full site.

Ah, missed that part, just read it through again though and caught it.
It's still very strange. How would a random Vietnamese businessman get into contact with someone to buy a prototype that is from a company as secretive as Apple. And Why wouldn't iTunes recognize it? Didn't iTunes at least recognize the one that Gizmodo had?

Highly doubtful we will see 64GB right now. Also, highly doubtful the 3GS will be discontinued.

I know these are all wild speculations and opinions w/o any basis but this is the internets after all. Sooo, since the model is changing so drastically I can se Apple discontinuing the 3Gs. And I do have a 3Gs so I'm not just pissing on others.

Come now... you already said all I was going to quote or point out. Apple has been like clockwork on their releases and dismissal of old models. Right now, they changed that mechanism to allocate the $99 iPhone. Hence, I can see the 3G go bye-bye and the 3GS keep on selling under that $99 range.

So, no. The 3GS will not get discontinued.

You must be confused. It's the 3G's that will be discontinued; not the 3GS's. Understand?

Proof? The guy who found the iPhone said it was 80GB, and after it was remotely wiped, they couldn't confirm anything.

As for what I think, just what most other people think:
16GB 3GS for $99
32GB 4th Gen for $199
64GB 4th Gen for $299

Apple may get a below cost price on the 64GB chips. Think about it. They sign a contract to pay $XX per chip for XX number of chips. As prices get lower, they are then paying above wholesale cost for the chips. Once it evens out, and they've paid an average reasonable wholesale price per chip, they renegotiate the contract. Toshiba is happy they have gotten their price per chip, Apple is happy they were able to get cheap storage early on for their brand new phone model, and 8x (or more) the storage capacity of competing phones.

Yeah .. it was 80gb!! After someone posted this thread, it makes sense to discontinue 3g & 3gs like they did with 2g when they released the new 3g iphone. The 3g & 3gs will be available only on ebay, craigslist, and exchange for 3g/3gs. The 3g/3gs will be gradually dropped out of the store. They will sell all 4th Gen design iphone:

32GB 4th Gen for $99
64GB 4th Gen for $199
80GB 4th Gen for $299 - assume they continue with 80gb from gizmodo

Otherwise if they made last minute change,

16GB 4th Gen for $99 - from vietnam info.
32GB 4th Gen for $199
64GB 4th Gen for $299

80GB makes no sense. I'm guessing it was a mistake on the part of the finder who didn't really know how to check the storage size properly.

But 80GB would be an odd storage measurment considering the chip options.

I think the 80GB model was a 64GB model with 16GB of storage for diagnostic information.

Here's my take on the new found "prototype" iPhone:
This looks like an earlier model than the one Gizmodo had. The lack of the screws on the bottom shows that it is a design & style exercise, and not aesthetically complete production model. It appears to be very similar to the leaked images on twitpic from February: http://twitpic.com/14ge1m

This new "leak" would be a prototype that would have never been meant to see the light of day, which is why the chips would not be hidden. They wouldn't be worried about it getting lost, so there is no reason to cover them up. The one that Gizmodo had was meant to be used and tested in the real world, therefore, it is possible that it get lost, misplaced or stolen. By covering up the chips, it gives them a little bit of secrecy if someone, such as Gizmodo, were to find it and do a teardown.

I think the more recent leak is actually later than the twitpic photos, but earlier than the Gizmodo model. The twitpic photos could be the one that the Chinese worker committed suicide over last year. This newer one was probably made before Toshiba had announced 64GB flash memory chips, therefore Apple may have thought that they would again be using 16/32GB units. Since Toshiba's announcement, Apple is likely to have recently made a contract with them for the new chips. It still does not cross out the possibility that the new phone will be 16/32/64GB capacities, with no old models remaining for sale as new retail units.

With 80GB of space, why do you need addtional space for diagnostic info? And if you did, why would you make it a single partition? Wouldn't you have a separate partition for the diag info?

I tend to agree. Because of the twitpic leak from February and the DVT vs PRO2 labels, I suspect this might be an earlier model. Even the A4 chip doesn't have the graphics we see in production iPads.

Actually, we have no idea if these chips were covered or not. We just see the disassembled results.

Doubtful. If Toshiba had 64GB chips in the plans and intended to have Apple as a customer, Apple would have been informed of this very early on in the process.

With 64GB of space for iTunes to access normally for music/apps and 16GB that only the phone can access. I don't know about the separate partition, as long as iTunes/App Store can't write to it, I don't think it matters.

Didn't Jason Chen say that there were shields over the chips that he would have had to basically destroy the circuit board to remove? I'm sure the Vietnamese site would have taken pics if there was a shield over them, as they appear to have taken pics of damn near everything else.

Possible, not probable. This phone was supposedly purchased in the US.

How does it matter where it was purchased? This new phone leak is not the same unit as the one in the twitpic photos, and that is the one I has said maybe the factory worker committed suicide over.

Doubtful. If Toshiba had 64GB chips in the plans and intended to have Apple as a customer, Apple would have been informed of this very early on in the process.

Maybe. Maybe they wouldn't have mentioned it if they didn't know when they would be readily available. Larger companies have a habit of not putting out press releases until products are ready for production.

Actually, the Vietnamese site gave very few pictures. I'm guessing the metal cover is a shield, not some sort of disguise. It will be on all phones. It was removed by the Vietnamese site before they took their pictures (I assume based on what I know of these things.)

I read your original statement incorrectly. I thought you were saying the phones were one and the same.

Maybe. Maybe they wouldn't have mentioned it if they didn't know when they would be readily available. Larger companies have a habit of not putting out press releases until products are ready for production.

True, they wouldn't make a PR, but these companies are partners. They would share this with a manufacturing partner.

I was a little loose with my statement, but they did have a lot of pics.

Maybe. As others have mentioned, they could drop the old line completely (for new retail sales) and have the new model in 16/32/64GB flavors at $99/199/299.
