I just want them to fix the little annoying things like not being able to delete individual text messages, limited call history etc

Why do you say no? The current interface looks like it was designed for a 2 year old to use.

Don

That simple design that you seem to deplore is one of the best features of the iPhone's UI. Apple has stated over and over that the iPhone is an answer to the convoluted and complicated interfaces of most cellphones. It is a simple UI for a reason. I don't agree with your connotation.

I'm definitely interested to see what changes Apple may bring to the UI as the firmware matures. I just don't have too much to complain about the current interface.

The 2 biggest changes I would like to see are Apple versions of the jailbreak apps Quickgold and SBSettings. The former, bringing Spotlight functionality to the iPhone, and the latter allowing you to switch network settings from with in any open app. They are very useful features and the main reasons I had been jailbroken.

I have used nearly every theme I could find when I was jailbroken and always ended up coming back to the stock theme. For some reason the only Winterboard theme I really dug were the BlackBerry themes.

I would like to see the home screens organized in a better way.

I was thinking, why not have the home screens organized more 2d, rather than the 1d they are now.

The center X could be the main screen and all the other screens are a flick away, instead of 5.

The iPhone's about a year-and-a-half old now and the OS is starting to look pretty dated now. I think they should make it look more modern (I'm thinking MobileMe web interface here). Looking at the home screen with just little square icons on a black background looks kinda cheesy.

Anyone else feeling like the iPhone OS could use a new interface?

No, it's fine as it is.

The iPhone may lack certain features of other phones. But it's best asset is it's UI. And you want that to change?

Exactly what I was thinking too! I think the dock always looked a little out dated and I always wanted this keyboard as my main texting keyboard ( did a quick photoshop job )

maybe with the top bar glossy black also :)

I have that keyboard as my default on my jailbroken iPhone. I love the way it looks, but it would look a little better with some blur added too.

IMO, it's one of the worst features on the iPhone. The home screens aren't organized at all, I just have pages and pages of apps, and I have to hunt for which one I want. Apple needs to devise a better way to organize apps (preferably a finder-like system), they also need to make it easier to change settings with out having to go into the settings app. I would love it If when on 3G, I could just tap the 3G icon and get a popup menu that asks me if I want to switch to EDGE, or vis-versa. The iPhone has a serious organizational problem, that needs to be fixed. I can't believe I'm going to say this, but I would prefer it if the iPhone had something similar to the Windows Mobile UI.

You realize that you just described the intelligence level of 90% of the people on these boards....

I would say it's more like 75%.

Apple shouldn't dumb down their products so that it's easy to use for some imbecile.

" ... for the rest of us"

oh and Emulsion? My iphone screen has length and width, and so do all the icons, so I'm pretty convinced, its already 2D

All I want is an easy way to switch apps. It's annoying to exit the current app, go back to the homescreen, find the other app and launch it.

No multi-tasking available.

This is what I want:

1. Widgets on the unlock screen

2. No more endless pages of apps

3. Instead I would like to see a organization system, that is similar to the Finder, a folder that has all of the apps in it, but they are subdivided into categories like, office apps, utilities, games. Kind of like what we have in OS X.

4. a more intuitive way to change settings. Say I want to change my WiFi settings, I would just tap the Wifi symbol up on the Info bar (top of the screen), instead of having to open settings then go to WiFi.

5. A scrollable Dock that has your favorite apps in it so you don't have to go into the app folder.

Pretty much, I just want the iPhone to have close to the same UI as OS X does. I know that its a pipe dream.

Don

Widgets on the unlock screen would probably eat up the battery if they're the type of widget that keeps getting information (weather, news sports.. etc).

Worse is when you start filling the thing up with apps. Organizing nine pages of apps is a real pain. There is no way of categorizing except to sigh heavily and say, "Okay, I'll put all my news readers and ebook readers on this page, and all my nav apps on that page, and my games on this page..." That's painful enough as you're adding apps one at a time. But then, should you ever have to restore from a backup, the durned thing merrily restores 'em all alphabetically! What a mess.

For a company with such a history of great user interfaces, it's kinda boggling that Apple didn't anticipate this at the time of the introduction of the App Store and v. 2 of the firmware. Better late than never, Apple!

jailbreak for now. most of your complaints will be addressed in june though.

Um yeah, that thing is kind of called usability? It's supposed to be easy to use. Maybe you'd have more fun on a WinMo device if you hate the iPhone's 'dumbed down" interface so much?

I think we're saying we want it to evolve.

It was spectacular when the iPhone was brand new. When the 3G came out, with the App Store, it was time for some new UI tricks to keep things organized.

It'll probably happen, along with some other overdue UI tricks. The Palm Pre seems likely to shake things up and motivate Apple... if it needs motivating. I rather doubt it; they've shaken up their UIs before and discarded previous holy catechism. They'll do it again. The UI is one thing that I'm confident will change. The prohibition against background apps will be another, I think.

I think the interface was designed for 1 page of icons

I don't think for a second they actually knew how explosive and popular the AppStore would be and that people would want dozens of apps on their phone.

When iPhone 3.0 gets announced/released i'll be amazed if they don't have a big rethink in the overall design of the interface to accommodate the number of icons needed.

I have to agree. Apple themselves said as much in so many words. The app store outperformed their expectations with the sheer volume of downloads. Just look at the fact that there are "only 9 pages" for the apps. I am sure Apple thought, "there is no way people will ever fill up 9 pages." Yet there are people all of the time who are jailbreaking their phones just so they don't have this limit.

The UI will be redesigned or at least updated significantly with the 3.0 update. :apple:

I think you're confusing simplicity with usability.

The 1980s iPhone icon grid is indeed simple and okay with a few apps and/or the casual owner. But it's not the most usable arrangement. Ironically, Apple organizes apps on their store into category folders, but doesn't allow the user to do the same.

Even the first iPhone menu page clones on WinMo allowed more than one page, organization, shortcuts to commonly used commands (Wifi anyone?) and ... let you flick around from the last icon page to the first... something that's astonishingly missing on Apple's limited menu pages.

There are a lot more interesting alternative UIs on jailbroke phones or WinMo. Nowadays no one on WinMo emulates the base iPhone menu... it's too dated, static and boring.

At the least, an alternative UI should be allowed for those who wish it.

The current UI on the iPhone is PERFECT.

Tweaks fine. Options to use folders and move icons into them etc... some rss feeds or gadgets, but on the whole the UI is excellent.

coverflow icons as a theme would be a fresh face to it. it might not be a good idea to some but that's fine.

i think it would be kind of cool to have a few different "wheels" so that i could customize the apps by type- games, business, photo apps, etc. each wheel organized alphabetically, by icon color (only because i forget the name of the app sometimes but know what the color icon i'm looking for), or date added.... being able to organize things/apps like you can in itunes or folders just by clicking the category would be kind of sweet.

the UI is great in my opinion but as said before maybe just a "freshening up" is what is needed/wanted.

I think a "Quicksilver " approach might come - Apple should be able to, and i'd imagine people will be expecting an updated interface. Maybe not too much, but being able to do more.
I think the Spotlight/the new Google Mac app might show some promise.
I guess one thing about lists of apps is that it makes sure that App builders have decent app button graphics! part of not finding an app is yo not positioning them in a way that works and is logical for you.

In terms of the background app etc - I'd imagine that WWDC will show what Apple's been working on.

I like the interface. It is simple to use and clean. Wouldn't mind seeing some tweaks, like folders or tabs to better organize apps, however.

All I want is an easy way to switch apps. It's annoying to exit the current app, go back to the homescreen, find the other app and launch it.

I found that highly amusing.

"They should make an easier way to switch roads while driving. It's annoying to have to exit the road you're on, decide the road you want to take, and get on it."

(Although you usually know what road/app to take before you exit your current one)

Rumors say the Mac OS will get a UI make-over (not completely), but maybe Apple release a make-over for the iPhone's OS at the same time?

I'd love to be able to have a background to the Home Screen. The actual design is fine - but maybe a little brighter in the menus - background pops through on a slightly transparent menu.

And of course, widgets on the Unlock Screen. Of course, we can be warned that widgets will eat up battery - but a missed call list, new text list, new mail list, upcoming calendar appointments, etc.

Number one thing I want an update with for the iPhone is a bigger spacebar. The amount of times I hit the B key instead of spacebar.
