Yes that is incorrect. If the phones you receive are on 4.2.1, it'll be accompanied by a baseband that's currently unable to be unlocked.

Okay thanks, one last question. :p

Is there any harm in performing the JB right away with GP, in case the new iPhone 4/baseband unlock solution is contingent on jailbreaking with another application?

Or, is the expectation that the unlock will be released through ultrasn0w, thus executable through Cydia/ultrasn0w regardless of what you used to jailbreak?

It'll be fine to jailbreak it as soon as you take it out of the box.

Doubt it's GP, more than likely its a package you have installed... Try process of elimination by uninstalling everything and putting them back on one by one. See which package causes the bad battery life.

I know for a fact it must be GP because I haven't really installed anything different then I did from 4.1 JB, which my battery life was fine.

I've read that this problem with GP is wide spread. I've also read people checking their usage vs standby to be at the same amount of time after a full recharge. Something must be running in the background caused by GP

Another thing I notice and have also read other people noticing too is the fact when using the phone battery depletion seems normal but stand by mode depletes much faster then it should. I know that might sound odd. Does anyone agree with that happening to them?

I do also have a problem with battery drain, but this happened to me on 4.1 as well. I don't think it's GP though, all that does is give the user root privileges, from what I've read it's more likely to be a tweak that's installed rather than the JB itself.

My battery is at 55% now with 3 hours of usage (all listening to podcasts through the built in speakers). Sometimes my usage is the same as the standby time which is worrying. As long as my phone lasts the entire day I'm not too bothered. Still, I would like to know what exactly is causing the drain though.

op, try using the sam activation method and see if theres any change. If theres something wrong apply redsnow first then GP.
I was on tethered jb with redsnow and ran GP over...no batery drain. After I woke up still at 100.

Hey there, thanks for the idea...

Can you please explain what you mean by Sam activation method? Also that sounds like a good idea to try a fresh restore (which I always do) but the fact you said to install RS first and then install GP over top. I wonder if that would help any??

Please explain Sam if you can...

THanks

Can you elaborate more on this?

1. When you first unbox an iPhone (4), what would be the first thing that you do if you intend to jailbreak immediately? I wouldn't have files to backup etc? Any point in connecting to iTunes?

2. Can you explain the 'hactivation' comment and the SAM fix?

Hacktivation was already covered by a previous poster

Here is a quote from DevTeam Blog, Ultra-Recycle blog post

"Developer @sbingner (author of TetherMe) has made some excellent progress devising a new hactivation method that kills two birds with one stone for all you ultrasn0w unlockers. His tool, “Subscriber Artificial Module (SAM)” tricks your iPhone and iTunes into creating legitimate activation tickets even though you’re unlocked with ultrasn0w. This means you get the full benefit of push applications, and your battery life increases substantially. If you’d like to try it out, check out http://www.bingner.com/SAM.html"

For what it's worth, I, as well as most of my "colleagues" have fantastic battery life on untethered, jailbroken 4.2.1 :)
