People on here have been shouting for literally years that they would take a thicker phone to get better battery, complaining about Apple's obsession with thinness etc. Now they give us a (very slightly) thicker phone with a better battery and people are complaining about that. Most common work-related injury at Apple engineering must be bruised foreheads from hitting their heads against the wall in frustration.
I would be more than happy with a thicker phone such that the camera bump would be equal to a brick phone in terms of width. Because measuring the 'width' on the body and excluding the camera bump imo is a scam...

That would give amazing battery life, and with a case feels robust. If anything a drop test; the camera would be the first one to lose out lol.

Yes because where you grip the phone is on the width of the body 100% of the time. The net experience is still a thin form factor in your hands and pocket. There is no scam.

exactly and this is why i want the width of the body to be semi-flush with the camera bump so its a flat surface haha
probably apple wont do this because they want you to upgrae it more often lol

I just don’t think they’re there yet with that level of miniaturization to fit the camera and all the other tech concentrated at the top. I think the direction should be at least to make the body 1mm thicker to reach that semi-flush design you want. The iPhone 6 was 6.9mm and the iPhone 6 Plus was 7.1mm. The 16 pro is 8.25mm and the current 17 pro is 8.75mm. I think going to 6.9mm would solve the mono speaker issue, more battery, and leveling it out more. 5.6mm is too little

I am going on an International trip next month and wanted to take something other than my 15Pro just in case there is some insane new condition regarding phones coming back home. I ordered a 13Mini from eBay Reconfig and I am very, very pleased with it. I just want a "modern" phone with a Physical SIM slot as well as an eSim capability. The 13Mini I got from eBay looks brand new. If you just want "a telephone", these new ones do't deliver any more for the 'average Joe Schmo" (Me). Love the size of the "mini", BTW.
For world travelers, depending on the country you're traveling to, the local Apple Store might even have nano SIM/ eSIM combo. Check their local website in advance. I know in the US, it is dual eSIM only, but some countries do have the old/ new version, and you can get the latest phone. Good luck!

Yes, I remember the days when I would travel for business and change out SIM card as soon as I land. Those were the good old days! :)

Speak for yourself I wouldn’t and regard the Air as a step in the right direction. Companies should be looking to improve battery technology not constantly make thicker and thicker phones.

that’s awesome! So many people feel the need for a new phone just because it’s been x years. If all you’re doing is posting on MR and watching YTs, then pretty much any model will work perfectly fine. Meanwhile, save $1,000 and enjoy your paid off phone with the freedom to switch carriers anytime you wish!

I'm looking at switching carriers. The carrier I plan on switching to offers $,1000 toward a new phone and $800 toward paying off your old phone with your old carrier. So, you can still pretty much switch carriers anytime you wish AND get a new phone.

You claim
"Once you realize it is in fact, just a tool to help with specific tasks, the differences between iterations of these devices as highlighted by the marketing become way less important."

I could not disagree more. And I have "...realize it is in fact, just a tool to help with specific tasks" since the v1 iPhone. Many of us analyze performance (e.g. cameras being the most blatantly obvious) rather than simplistically what is "highlighted by the marketing" as you state.

I called the marketing materials "highlights" because they are obviously not an exhaustive list of technical specifications. In fact, scroll down just a bit on the iPhone 17 Pro page Apple put up to find where they want you to "Get the highlights." Is Apple being "simplistic," too?

If the new version of this "tool" does not appreciably improve how I use it, I don't upgrade. YMMV.

I’m not saying anyone will upgrade from a 16 Pro to a 17 Pro this year. I’m just saying every year for decades these are the top 3 reasons normal people upgrade.
I upgraded from the 16PM to the 17PM. not for the cameras, screen, wifi, ram, color, battery life, or any thing else but 1 thing.
Living it the desert the phone gets hot. When its 105 F or higher it gets warm quick. I was was super excited vapor chamber cooling.
Does it work? side by side with the 16PM the 17PM is noticably cooler.

Have you not had a similar experience with overheating in the sun?

13 Pro holdouts can meet me on 15 Pro island. ;) I'm sticking with 15 Pro for now mainly due to titanium and not yet ready to embrace cosmic colors and camera control button/placement. 15 Pro has a great screen, great camera, USB-C, 8GB RAM, Dynamic Island, Apple Intelligence stuff, action button, and it's currently the lightest Pro phone since 11 Pro, a gram lighter than the 11 Pro. Tend to agree with others, 18 Pro unlikely to wow you if you're not excited about 17 Pro. I'm waiting to see what 20th anniversary brings.
15 Pro blue titanium here. Will never change!

I was looking forward to upgrading from 13 Pro Max to either the 17 Pro or Pro Max, but opted for a new battery instead. My gf went from a 12 Pro Max to the 17 Pro Max and I don't care for the feel of it, or for camera control, dynamic island, action button, etc. Side by side the camera isn't a whole lot better either. Great upgrade from the 12 PM without ProMotion though.

Some people have to convince themselves that it's not worth it to spend the big money on new tech. So they post on Macrumors hoping folks will agree with them and all is well. Unfortunately, in this case, going from a 13 to a 17 is a huge jump in technology and well worth the money spent. I just upgraded and couldn't be happier.

If you could get a 17 without iOS 26, it would be more interesting.

I don't have to convince myself to spend “big money” on something I don't need when I have a phone that still serves my needs.

And to make it clear, nothing about the 17 screams new tech, this is just another update as every year.

I plan on returning my 17 Pro Max tomorrow. Its a cool phone but i got too used to Android tbh. The keyboard is even worse now on iOS and although ill miss some of the apps and FaceID, i think im going to wait on the Fold.

My experience is definitely not the same as his.
Arizona sun s brutal. If you need to fry an egg use any phone for 10 minutes.
My experience is still in my pool in the shade with temp 95°+
The 16pm takes around 10 minutes the phone is becoming hot and uncomfortable.
17pm get warm but not nearly as hot as the 16pm.
I’m not sure how he tested it. Watching 2 baseball games at the same time full brightness 85° the 16pm was noticeably warmer.
As mentioned my experience has been different,
If it wasn’t different from his ! the 17pm would have gone back.
