Reading all these posts I would be fascinated to know just which Pro features are used over and above the standard 17. Bearing in mind that as a passive device all the phones are now more or less equal it is the active, creative aspect of using a Pro that should define the purchase. I doubt that most users actually use the full capabilities of these devices. Like buying a Ferrari but not having the driving skills to manage it’s full potential!
I agree. I think it would only likely be the telephoto camera. But I read something like 97% of iPhone photos are taken with the main camera. So, maybe hardcore gamers or less than 1% that want to take video in raw. I got the Air and am super pleased. Now, I would miss the cameras if I were traveling. But when not traveling, it’s no big deal and have a dedicated camera for travel anyways.

The lens that was used in the camera app? What does that mean, that the last used camera is used as the scan camera?
Otherwise, if you say that the camera is chosen and adjusted like it is in the main camera app, then the ultra wide would be chosen for some close pictures or scans, like ID cards.
There has been a thread a while ago of a person noticing their baby pics or whatever weren’t sharp anymore after upgrading. That’s because of the minimum focal length or something like that of the main camera. You have to move subjects further away than before to have them in focus.
I don’t understand why you have to be so rude.

The rudeness was all you. A person can be rude without explicitly saying rude things.

Aside from the fact you're discussing an app that you're apparently not using, after I specifically mention tinkering with lenses and distances, your conclusion is that I can't tell the difference between the ultrawide and the regular lens. I consider a reply like that to just be a waste of my time, hence my short comment.
Given the huge difference between the two lenses, what you're actually saying is that you assume the poster you're replying to doesn't grasp the very basics, which I consider to be condescending and therefore rude. In order to reach this conclusion, you had to ignore important parts of my post and simply assume I was incapable of registering what is before my eyes.

Hence my politeness comment, as on my previous post I decided not to write any of this because I wanted to avoid the argument so I'll stop here.

This is a very tough year for certain users of the Pro models.

Same aluminum, screen and new and much better front camera (the real upgrade in cameras this year) as the 17. Worst looks and materials than Air and a really chubby body in comparison...

Tough year when one was used to having everything best in one device (like me when I bought the 13PM). Things have changed and people need to readjust.

The telephoto camera is really something. I've just landed in the most concrete city in the world. View from high-rise where I'm staying to the famous 101 Tower- all taken on the same balcony. Just point and shoot. Nothing fancy. 1x to 8x. Really quite impressive. I'm able to see the glass on the building to the observatory deck. Wow.

But this 17 pro phone heats up quickly and it gets so hot, I had to put it down. Now I'm afraid to touch it. Waiting to get back to the US to return this item. It could be this particular phone is defective so I can get a new one, but I rather wait for the 18 Pro/ ProMax while Apple masters the technology on better cooling system. Meanwhile I'm just vacationing with my 15ProMax. And in all honesty, day to day, I'm cool with the 15PM.

Conclusion: Love the camera. Love the orange color. Hate the aluminum casing. Hate the tactile feel of this phone, it doesn't feel very PRO.

If your phone does what you need it to do, then don't buy a new one. Why this narcissistic need to tell others what you won't be doing? Well guess what? I won't be going skiing this year! I definitely won't be paragliding! I've decided not to run for president in Paraguay!

I've got a 14 Pro with 100% battery (replaced in June) and a 17 Pro/Pro Max on order (depending what comes in stock first here). I know it will be twice as fast, I know it will have a better camera, I'm expecting faster transmissions speeds and unlike some, I use Apple Intelligence right now. H
Having USB-C is an advantage because I have a slew of Thunderbolt 4 cables and I only keep a couple of lightning cables around for compatibility with the 14 Pro. I'll be glad to see the back of it.

The rest? Well I have satellite connectivity, I'm more interested in peak low light than peak nits and I'll be glad that the low end model is 256 because that's what I use at the moment and I'm only using about 50% of it.

Set the 16 Pro camera to RAW and hold it still. You will get far better captures than the 13 Pro.

Then I have to deal with RAW and all the post-processing they need. I shoot everything on my DSLR in RAW, but my phone is for quick point and shoot photos..it's not my main camera.

The iPhone 17 Pro is the world’s most hideous and cheap-looking smartphone - this alone should make people reconsider such ideas.
Well, at least you’re consistent. This is the second time you said that it was hideous looking and it’s not. What phone do you have? That’s so beautiful. The phone is a tool not a fashion statement not a piece of jewelry. That’s something to gaze over while you’re using it. I like the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and many others do too.

Apple tells us all about the great innovations every september.
I guarantee if someone had you blind test a 15 pro and 17pro you would not notice much of a difference.
As far as the camera goes the key phrase is “ post processing “.
In my opinion people upgrade for one of 3 reasons.
1. The phone is 3+ years old
2. You really want the new tech and are thrilled (me)
3. You feel you need the new tech but are sorely disappointed when you realize that its very close to last years phone (or the 2 year old phone). (So me but I still have the 17pm)

I never upgrade every year. Well that’s what I think and every freaking September I hit the preorder. Every year I think damn it’s just like my 2 year old phone.
Guess what I will be doing next September, not preordering ( that’s what I am telling myself )

No, the techies upgrade for those reasons.

The general populace upgrade for 3 reasons:
1) Better Battery life
2) Better Camera
3) Colors!

Camera, I am willing to bet 99% of people would never see the difference in the camera.
Battery life - maybe but most have made it a habit to charge whenever they have the opportunity
Colors - that i can see. I am more apt to upgrade not so much for a phone color but the color of the cases. I wish they had a dark red for the 17pm.

I’m not saying anyone will upgrade from a 16 Pro to a 17 Pro this year. I’m just saying every year for decades these are the top 3 reasons normal people upgrade.

I don't think anyone disputes that the 17P is better than the 13P. The question is whether the 17P is $1.1k better than the 13P. For that, I think there can be serious doubts. $1.1k will buy a lot of chicken nuggets.

I replied to a person who wrote to the OP that they “don’t understand these posts,” implying that the OP’s view is simply wrong. I responded in a similar style, with the intention of showing that there are always two sides and perspectives to a matter.

I’m perfectly capable of perceiving tech upgrades, especially when they’re meaningful. I see it differently than you then. For me there’s very little that’s actually new beyond Apple’s marketing spin.

Your response reads more like a personal jab than a counter-argument, which to me suggests my original point hit a nerve.
My apologies; no personal jab was intended. Your own words state "there’s very little that’s actually new beyond Apple’s marketing spin." I fidagree and find significant real tech improvement, some of which like the camera competence are very obvious to me.

I don’t understand these posts.

13 pro to 17 pro

Better cellular modem, better camera’s, better WiFi modem, better screen, better battery, USB-C, satellite connectivity, better processor, seemingly stronger screen, Dynamic Island, ray tracing.

If you don’t like the phone. Fine. But the 17 pro is definitely a better phone than the 13 pro.

LOL the 13 Pro is built like a tank. I’ve never used a case on mine, I’ve dropped it plenty of times but it still looks immaculate. Other than some light scuffing on the metal rings round the lens. And that’s after almost four years. I very much doubt the 17 Pro would be able to achieve that being made out of aluminium.

Yes the 17 is also aluminium but it’s also a darn sight cheaper and lighter.

I just got the 17 Pro Max, was upgrading from a 12 Pro Max and it's night and day for me. It's a better phone across the board but my expectations for tech may be more grounded than others. Marketing is both a blessing and a curse for companies and sometimes will set the bar too high for consumers.

We're at the point of diminishing returns with this tech, the phone can only be so fast before it doesn't matter, the screen can only be so good until you can't tell the difference and the camera can only get so good until you don't really notice or need it, etc, etc, etc . The battery life still has room to grow as does the software but hardware wise for the most part these phones are at a point where they're so good that most people aren't going to notice or need it and that includes 12-17.

Moving forward, getting the new iPhone every year or two won't be a thing for most people and Apple knows this, it's why they've branched out to watches/VR/speakers/etc.
Agreed, but as a photog I have watched ILC cameras and lenses improve for many decades. And looking at the (IMO pure magic for the size) iPhone cameras I can envision how Apple could keep improving; faster/better lenses for instance, not to mention where computational photography may go.

I come from using Nikon's best and look at iPhone cameras critically as I include them in an enterprise workflow. IMO the 17 Pro's three lenses/cameras do reach an important plateau of competence such that "...these phones are at a point where they're so good that most people aren't going to notice or need it..."

I suggest:
• Give the 17P time to index and see if you still experience the overheating issue. I observe no such overheating with the 17 PM.
• Pay special attention to not leaving the 17P in direct sunlight. My 16 PM did overheat if I left it in direct sunlight.
• If it still overheats return it within the 14 day window. You may have a bad sample.

Skiing and paragliding I understand, but why did you pull out of the Paraguayan presidential race? Talk about an overreaction… ;)

I am going on an International trip next month and wanted to take something other than my 15Pro just in case there is some insane new condition regarding phones coming back home. I ordered a 13Mini from eBay Reconfig and I am very, very pleased with it. I just want a "modern" phone with a Physical SIM slot as well as an eSim capability. The 13Mini I got from eBay looks brand new. If you just want "a telephone", these new ones do't deliver any more for the 'average Joe Schmo" (Me). Love the size of the "mini", BTW.
