Even if you never drop the phone, the steel in the frame is really easy to scratch... So the case could be helpful.
If this type of scratches does not border you and you are only worried about dropping your phone and break the screen... Well lets this guy give you an advice, he is a physicists if someone knows of falls, impacts or forces is he.

Good luck in your decision.

I have insurance on my existing X though a third party which allows me to use Apple as the repair center, I can transfer it to the Max if I want. My first deductible is $189, looks like I will just get Apple Care on the Max.

My naked X has an opaque stainless steel band that I could polish (that's the case with the silver phone, at least) and scratches around the edges of the glass back. That's it, no big deal.

I have a clear, thin case. Doesn’t add much bulk, but the phone feels so much better naked. Generally, I’ll put it on when traveling or if plan on going out drinking or so,etching, then take it off if I’m at work at my desk or browsing at home. Best of both worlds!

I was full caseless and screen protector less with my X, dropped it a couple times on the corners, no glass cracked. I'm on the Sprint upgrade program and they only care that it can turn on and the glass isn't cracked. For my X Max I am using a GelaSkins skin because I like the designs, screen protector and a bumper. Bumper is only to keep the skin from getting caught on my pockets.

I'm a Marine and I took my X with me to the field all the time, put it in my flak, set it down on the ground, a few drunken nights out in Japan and my phone survived. All my Marines had cases and screen protectors and their phones, no matter Apple or Android, were always broken.

Everyone thought I was crazy to not have a case or anything. If it broke, it broke and I would fix it if it did. I'm an electronics tech and have plenty of equipment at my disposal to fix a broken screen if need be.

Yes, no case here. Just like my X, 7 Plus, 6S Plus and 6 before it. Haven't shattered a screen yet. And worst case I have apple care+ and have to pay the $99 deductible. I'll consider that a "no case fee" if that ever happens.

Ditto. It’s crazy to me that people buy multiple cases at $30+ a piece (some much higher), especially when they have AppleCare+. The amount I’ve saved on cases over the years will cover the deductible a few times over.

My iPhone XS had a slab of thin glass put on the front and a plastic box put on it straight out of the packaging.....seriously though, screen protector and OtterBox Defender Pro right away.

For me, an iPhone isn’t complete without a nice Apple leather case to compliment it. Not only is it protective and nice to hold on to, it looks good too. If my Apple leather case starts to look bad, I replace it. Ive had leather cases ever since Apple introduced them. My Max has a black one.

I never use a case as well. Always hate it and like others said, it feels bulky and completely ruin the look of the phone itself. I only use a glass protector (not a cheap bubble plastic one) on my screen and it feel like there is no protector at all.

In almost 3 years I drop my phone several times with no issues or scratches on screen. Don't know if the new phones are more fragile with glass all over it.
