screen hack, etc...

It's a small piece of software that you run once. (It can and should be removed before delivering the iBook in for service, but that's easily done by zapping the PRAM). You can get it here and remember to read the instructions carefully!

Disclaimer: I've not tried this, and does in no way guarantee it will work nor not harm your machine.

The limitations of Video Mirroring were making me want to wait for the PB update. Now I want to buy the iBook if I can effectively use the hack you are talking about. My concern is that I don't want to void the warranty if I use it and I don't want to damage the computer if I remove it.

Can you explain to me (average joe consumer) how to "zap" the PRAM? If you "zap" the PRAM, will this affect programs already installed on your computer? Does anyone out there have experience with this and help me out?

Is this the only version of the hack available?

Thanks a ton!

when it comes to the powerbook even the 12incher the ibooks cannot compete, yes, the spanning hack expands screen real estate, but, thats about where the similarities end.

...yea that's what I meant

Answer: PowerBook.

Which one? Mine. It's up for sale.

The current 12" SD model, stock config. Bought on 2005/05/05. Only 2100$CAN. About 9 months of Apple warranty left.

:D

please note, the ibook is basically a model designed for students those who will be doing browsing word processing and light photo editing. when it comes to the powerbook even the 12incher the ibooks cannot compete, yes, the spanning hack expands screen real estate, but, thats about where the similarities end. why not have a comp that can do that without having to hack it, the powerbooks have a faster processor, faster hds, better graphics(with tiger and all its eye candy and graphics this is a BIG ++), more connectivity, better screens(graphics again). the powerbook is worth the extra $$ some ppl just dont know what they are lookin at....

Yeah, true that I much rather get a 12'' PB over the 12'' iBook. However I much rather get the 14'' iBook over the 12'' PB. Their virtually the same though. Except the iBook has 80mhz less processing power (and from a PC user standpoint that is NOTHING), the screen spanning which apparently can be hacked , a few more connectivity.

However I much rather save my 200 bucks for maybe some software I need to buy or even applecare.

Answer: IMHO Powerbook

If you really like to own a piece of history go with the ibook, in a couple of months you'll see widescreen ibooks probably across the line with probably Intels inside..who knows, the rumours about the widescreens are strong, most PC laptops are already sporting widescreen displays, so i seriously suspect next updates widescreen better graphics unless Apple is still depending on their halo effect to get consumers to buy lesser products at same prices with lousy specs.

with the recent updates the PBs still represent better value
1. better graphics
2. faster HD
3. better vram
4. DVI output
5. No need for spanning hack
6. better scree (not including the 12")
7. RAM up to 2 GB (not including the 12")

if you buy hardware to last the next 3 years or so and want to still feel current when using it i suspect the PB will probably deliver that performance and feeling in 3 years

dunno with the new intels coming its a risky time for any purchases, apple's latest update are dissapointing compared to what is available out there many may disagree but no PC company will be sitting on their laurels and releasing laptops of yesteryear with the amount of competition out there, widescreen, better resolution, faster CPUs better batteries laptops users want these things. apple provides some of these features in the PBs and some in the ibooks

for me i say PB, but its your choice and choose wisely its your hard earned $$$$$ (or you parents hahaha)

Mmm.... it definately seems like nobody can give any convincing thought to get the PB over the new iBook.

I think I'll be getting the iBook then. It definately seems best bang for the buck.

Although alot of people keep emphasizing that the PB has more power and therefore better, the difference is far too small to cash out 500 dollars (12'') or 200 dollars (14''). I much rather use that money on other things... like getting a free ipod mini or something :)

I think the only thing I would have to sacrifice is the screen spanning. Luckily there will be a hack for it which can clear up my dissappointment. Other then that I really think right now the iBook is definately a better buy.

Zapping PRAM (how-to from Apple, there's also a sticky on it here at MR) is just another way of saying that you reset the Parameter RAM. This article from Apple support explains what's saved in PRAM (as does the how-to), better than I would be able to... ;)
