I thought the upgrade process begins with a back up of the phone.

It is a good reminder though to not only sync often but also to back up your files especially address book and ical. Use the export feature built into these programs to keep backups on an external hard drive just in case a sync or upgrade wipes out everything.

This is bizarre. Why would anyone not backup their iPhone, considering how easy it is?

I've lost nothing, not even when my (then 4 yr old) daughter clicked Restore in iTunes when my iPhone was attached.

Probably because it takes unimaginably long to sync the thing. I lost a year's worth of changes because my iPhone crashed and had to be restored. Even this week, while I've been syncing in anticipation of restoring to a new phone, syncing/backups on consecutive days still took 30 minutes each day.

all my conctacts? GONE!
all my notes? GONE!

It's like I lost my house to a flash flood, real talk.

I had sooooo many important notes that I had for a good year, my favorite quotes, certain affirmations to keep my spirits high, summaries of books i've read, MY WIRELESS ROUTER PASSWORD UGH!, extra tidbits of information of my liking, the whole 9 GONE!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY APPLE WHY!!

I wish it was like the sidekick when all I had to do was log in and all my data would come back!

all my pictures & videos? GONE!!!!!!!

I went to restore and it restored all the way back to April.....Between May and Now I've done soo much revamping all to go to waste..

This indeed changes everything. Again, but is change good?

A fool and his data are soon parted

Go with Google contacts. Don't have to worry about importing, bla bla. Just sync OTA.

You didn't make a backup before updating? When was the last time you synced, I thought it made a backup at every sync.

It should. When I updated my 3GS, the first thing it did was backup my phone before it started the updated process. Heck, for big software upgrades, I sync my phone for I update, just in case. So usually I have to sit through the syncing process twice.

OP, did itunes not run a backup for you before it started to upgrade the software?

sync your phone every night. period! even if you don't like my wife who will go months without syncing (i have to physically do it to save me the headache down the road if she loses everything) you at least should prepare for a major update by doing a SYNC the night before an update releases and once it is done, right click and do another back up to be safe.

when i upgraded to iOS4 it first backed up my phone, restored it with 4.0, then backed it up again. it was like pulling into a pit stop for a tire change.

Exactly what I do with AddressBook, I export at least once or twice a month. I'm 100% Google Calendar.

I hear you man. I have to update my wife's apps, sync her phone, and backup her laptop. :-(
