Bought Turbo Tax for a good price from Costco. Been using it for about 4 years now without any problems until now.

Could not import last years info.
On my MacBook, a saved file would never open again.

I got it to work for the most part on a G4 PowerBook although when it came time to electronically file my state taxes I got error messages so I had to snail mail them which means my refund will probably take weeks longer.

Sent it all back to Intuit for a refund, which they received 2 weeks ago and I've yet to see my refund.

Also have used TurboTax for years now. Did everything including filing with fed and Ca state, and got direct deposit into my bank acct. Not bad, but now it only works with 10.4 Tiger or greater. My iBook G4 won't work unless I get a Tiger 10.4 upgrade.

Aargh!

This completely sucks. I've been reluctant to upgrade my iBook G4 because I'm worried about what will break. I know if I do I'm going to lose the option of using Office v.X.

I have Leopard on my iMac but my iBook has always been my finance computer, and it's running 10.3.9.

If anyone has State Farm insurance, you can register online and it has a link to file your taxes with Turbo Tax Deluxe for free.

kaenai & TheZA . . . . .

The online approach seems attractive.
1. The price is better.
2. No issue of whether the Mac or Windows version is better.
3. No need to store old data.

HOWEVER, I would have some concern about having my complete financial information (including SS numbers) reside in a remote Intuit computer that might get hacked from the outside or pilfered from the inside by some employee of Intuit.

Does Intuit provide convincing evidence that the information is safeguarded?

Straight from their website:

"Armed with surveillance cameras and security alarms, the TurboTax Security Team physically protects our computers and your information—24 hours a day, 7 days a week."

Now maybe if they had said machine guns instead of alarms, I would be sold :p

I used Office v.X on my MBP for a long time - even with Leopard. Not sure why you think it won't work..

It doesn't work on my iMac Core Duo. Broke the day I installed Leopard.

Update: well, what do you know? I installed Leopard on my iBook G4 and MS office v.X still works. Maybe it only doesn't work on Intel Macs?

I use QuickTax Online (Canadian, not sure if they have a US equivalent). Sure it's $20 a year, but I think it's worth it. I can submit online to the CCRA (Canada's IRS) and get my refund in days, rather than weeks. The first time I entered all my tax info into QuickTax, it found me an extra $100 refund that I wouldn't have known to claim -- easily worth the $20 I paid to file that year.

Online filing is not without its problems -- last year I claimed some charitable donations that were not needed the previous year, and I was unaware that QuickTax already knew about those and automatically carried them forward, without making that obvious to me. So I double-claimed, the government over-refunded, and I ended up owing the government another $700 last fall. Doh.
