It makes sense to think about the alternatives before you complain. Let's see what would plausibly happen if apple had decided to put retina display into mini:

Better chips, which is required to push all the pixels

Thicker retina screen, just like the one in iPad 4

Larger battery, to feed the two above

Larger form factor, because of the above mentioned

Higher price

So do you think retina is worth all of the above trade-offs? For one, it contradicts the form factor that you said you love.

I am not even mentioning the contradiction between the possible retina mini and the flagship iPad in ppi counting. So it's good to think about the alternatives before you complain.

I'm with you OP. We can't keep this crappy thinking and letting it slide. They charge a premium for their products, so I'm expecting it to BE a premium product. They obvious are doing this because they're holding back a key feature for the iPad mini 2 or 3 and maximize profit. There is no innovation in that. I don't need a 12 hrs long battery life, I need 8 hours and a retina screen.

Apple have be boasting EVERYTHING retina this year from the iPad 3 to two new MacBooks, now with the mini all of a sudden it's not important anymore? Geez talk at a reality distortion field. I respect Steve because when he used the reality distortion field it was to PUSH THE LIMIT. Not to save it for next year

It's ok OP, people just don't want to listen to any critical issues w their precious mini. For those who love it, don't worry if someone hates it.

If apple released this mini first, I don't think people would be complaining so much. Every previous device has retina, including this really small device that does everything an iPad does...hello iPhone 4, 4s, and 5. It doesn't make any sense for a company to release a 'new improved' anything on all products then not add it in one of the most sought for iPads, the mini.

I don't think it will be a higher price when they finally put it into the next one. I don't really think it had anything to do with that stuff, I feel like Apple figured that if they made the mini as capable as the ipad then no one would buy a ipad because it would cost $170 more to purchase. I feel like they didn't want to cannibalise sales of the ipad. While it's a great business strategy, it sucks for me, the consumer. I mean, come on, if the mini can support siri, then why can't the 2? Apple said it was because of hardware that the 2 could not use siri but the mini shares the same guts. It's just pure business strategy that's all. Keep in mind that this is my opinion, not saying that I am stating facts here.;)

My iPad mini is sweet, I wouldn't call it precious, but every now and again you just got call BS. Some of you folks act like its news that the iPad mini doesn't have a retina display. What did it take you having to buy one or go to the Apple store to prove it to yourselves?

Apple is about profit, and unless they could make this thing at a cost that will allow them to keep their margin where they want it to be it won't ever include a retina display. Hopefully at some point they will be able to do this.

People can complain and hate (stupid) all they want it doesn't sway my opinion of the iPad Mini whatsoever. I bought this thing with full disclosure from Apple and it seems to work very well for my use.

If you guys think whining on a rumor forum is going to get Apple's attention then you are kidding yourself. The only thing Apple is going to listen to is folks not opening their wallets. I think the projection was 750 thousand to a million through the weekend and 5 million world wide by months end. Maybe if the only sold a million by months end, THIS would get their attention, but is that going to happen? NOT LIKELY!

That's how I use mine for web surfing. In portrait I didn't like it but once I started using it in landscape it is great. Is it retina? No, but it is fine and the deice has so many other positives...I don't see myself using the family ipad 3 much anymore. I do understand if the text is too small for some but the whole screen sucks thing is going way overboard....
I prefer to surf the web in portrait mode. The problem on the mini is that in portrait mode you really notice the non retina display. Man i hope they invest more into this device because it has a lot of promise. I feeling that man they couldve really hit this out of the ballpark.

I'm amazed how many folks have bought the mini without looking at the screen first if it was going to be such an issue for them. Everyone knew it wasn't going to be retina from the rumours and confirmed in the keynote.

Its a shame because you've taken a mini out of the supply chain for people who have checked it out in store and want to buy one. My local reseller had cleared their stock in a day and plenty of customers will now have to wait.

Sorry I know its your right to return it, and Apple's return policy lets you do it. But maybe just maybe check something out in store first before essentially depriving someone else.

And for what its worth I didn't see an issue with the screen. I have an iPad 2 and pretty happy to keep it for now, but might get a mini for my girls to play with instead of mine. They, and I suspect most users, would be quite happy playing Angry Birds etc whether its retina or not.;)

Just hold the iPad mini in landscape if the font is too small for you.

"You're holding it wrong!"

Wishful thinking that the screen would suffice.

IMO the mini should be far superior for casual gaming.

I really think it just wasn't physically possible at this time. Economics just doubly confounded things.

Another person "justifying" their purchase. This is like ford taking out automatic windows and cd players/dashboards to let the battery last longer...it's the norm. Retina display on all their mobile devices is the norm (except for the 2 year old iPad 2).

I WISH! I just wish Apple released tis with retina...people SOLELY focused on the "old" A5 processor...then flashed them back into this moment of time showing them that not only what they are bitching about is true

But you knew the specs before you bought it as it was made public both on this website and others. And now you you have a problem with the bad A5 , 512 MB of ram and non retina display? :p

I don't have 20/20 vision (far worse than that) but I wear glasses so I am still able to see the pixels on the Mini's screen. :(

When 300 people are bitching about the same problem in the same forum, you know that it's a real problem affecting real users.

LoL.... "300" out of how many millions of units sold?

OP being a little bit over the top don't you think? You have 20/20 and it's killing your eyes? Come on now.

First and foremost I want to say I LOVE the iPad Mini's design, portability, lightness, size, and speed from the "bad" A5 Processor. Everything is great...BUT (you all knew this was coming) my eyes (for the first time in a long time) are sore. I'm 23 years old with 20/20 vision so I'm not some old man...but man this screen is killing my eyes.

I'm pissed to because I love how I can type in landscape/portrait with my thumbs (HUGE FEAUTURE for me). I think my eyes have been spoiled by retina and from the amount of time I spend on website/forums/surfing the web the font is killing me. I'm sure the books look better since they're formatted better...but websites are KILLING my eyes. Another big example is if you type something in wrong and the correct spelling comes up under it in blue, it looks TERRIBLE!

I don't even know if Retina would make it that much better because the font is still pretty small and when I zoom in to view the entire width of the paragraph its still a little too small.

I'd like to know if anyone else feels this way and despite trying to work with the screen it just didn't work out. I love my Apple products, but I'm not willing to ruin my eyes/cause headaches over them.

I think I'm going to have to return it and get the 4. I'm pissed bc now I'm spoiled by the portability lol...but a Retina screen is a Retina screen.

I agree with you 200%. Love its form factor but the screen really is a deal breaker. I'm trying to like it enough to keep it, but the screen is too much of an eye sore, literally.

It's just nice to see some confirmation that I'm doing the right thing by returning it.

As it is, it's a kind of strange product. It's not for reading - not compared to kindle or the full size ipad, which are both superior in different ways. The mini is a compromise, but not in a good way for readers.

The form is tailored for reading, but the text is really bad. I really don't understand people who can't see that. It's excellent for casual gaming, fine for video... Guess I'll give it another look if it gets a retina display.

On the other hand, the full size should be much thinner and lighter by that point as well, as logic would dictate if they can get the retina display in a mini form factor...

I skipped the mini all together because I had an dreaded before but wanted a bigger screen for textbook pages and maps so just got the ipad:D

I'm exchanging it for the iPad 4. Trust me. I'm not using and abusing.

I am waiting for mini version 2 possibly with retina. Purchased iPad 4 yesterday coming from iPad 2. Awesome product no regrets hard to go back to non-retina screen.

Same here, returning or selling mine. The PPI is fine it's the UI elements and text that are too small.

Maybe they should have made it 16:9 and used the iPhone 5 UI,

I believe the iPad 2 lacks the noise cancelling mike that the Siri capable devices have.

I just can't justify keeping the mini that is only smaller than my 2 but the same in every other respect but the camera. I am in no major rush to own a mini so I took mine back. I can wait 12 months if needed for a mini with only 1 year old tech instead of one with nearly 2 year old tech. Who know, maybe the new newer ipad will have a smaller bezel by then.

But then again, once the whites are available, I may snag the 16gb version. It's just to neat advice to keep me away for long. If I had been able to get a white, I may still have it. No sense in settling for something if you are not 100% happy with it.

I did the same. Bought both yesterday and I don't really need 2 iPads since I use it only at home.

That is exactly right, people act like Apple snuck in these lower spec chips and non-retina display. Everyone had full disclosure.

Oh Lord.. thread number 300 bitching about the same thing. You couldn't post this complaint in an existing thread?

This. So many times over.

The mods seriously just need to merge every single one of these bitch-fest posts into one thread filled with these miserable whiners.

Glasses maybe? I'm just above the point where vision turns into a legal handicap in my state, but no problem with the mini here.
