My iPad mini is sweet, I wouldn't call it precious, but every now and again you just got call BS. Some of you folks act like its news that the iPad mini doesn't have a retina display. What did it take you having to buy one or go to the Apple store to prove it to yourselves?

Apple is about profit, and unless they could make this thing at a cost that will allow them to keep their margin where they want it to be it won't ever include a retina display. Hopefully at some point they will be able to do this.

People can complain and hate (stupid) all they want it doesn't sway my opinion of the iPad Mini whatsoever. I bought this thing with full disclosure from Apple and it seems to work very well for my use.

If you guys think whining on a rumor forum is going to get Apple's attention then you are kidding yourself. The only thing Apple is going to listen to is folks not opening their wallets. I think the projection was 750 thousand to a million through the weekend and 5 million world wide by months end. Maybe if the only sold a million by months end, THIS would get their attention, but is that going to happen? NOT LIKELY!

While I don't think Apple is going to overreact to an internet forum, I would think (and hope) it would be on their radar screen if many of their biggest advocates express concern about their latest product.

This isn't an Android forum where bashing Apple products is expected. This forum is populated by people who care enough about Apple products to join a forum and discuss it. A lot of these threads are started by people who own many Apple products, love many things about the device...but still don't like the screen.

While you're right that it's going to sell regardless, I think it will get their attention if returns are higher than expected. I also think it will be a concern if sales are softer than expected. I've been eagerly anticipating the Mini for months. I fully expected to buy one for myself on launch day and had it lined up for Christmas gifts for two others.

After look at the screen at the store I changed my mind. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

Apple painted themselves into a bit of a corner on this one. They underestimated demand in the 7 inch market. And they were unable to build something to the standards of their other products at the price/ profit margin to make it work.

I'm taking a pass on this version of the Mini, but imagine I'll be first in line for the Mini 2 with higher resolution.

That being said, I completely understand where a lot of people are happy with their purchase.

You'd never notice the resolution if Apple hadn't coined the term retina. Nobody would say, "gee, I like this but I have to return it because I need a couple hundred more pixels in each dimension". People didn't get headaches and complain that the first iPhones were blurry.

First and foremost I want to say I LOVE the iPad Mini's design, portability, lightness, size, and speed from the "bad" A5 Processor. Everything is great...BUT (you all knew this was coming) my eyes (for the first time in a long time) are sore. I'm 23 years old with 20/20 vision so I'm not some old man...but man this screen is killing my eyes.

I'm pissed to because I love how I can type in landscape/portrait with my thumbs (HUGE FEAUTURE for me). I think my eyes have been spoiled by retina and from the amount of time I spend on website/forums/surfing the web the font is killing me. I'm sure the books look better since they're formatted better...but websites are KILLING my eyes. Another big example is if you type something in wrong and the correct spelling comes up under it in blue, it looks TERRIBLE!

I don't even know if Retina would make it that much better because the font is still pretty small and when I zoom in to view the entire width of the paragraph its still a little too small.

I'd like to know if anyone else feels this way and despite trying to work with the screen it just didn't work out. I love my Apple products, but I'm not willing to ruin my eyes/cause headaches over them.

I think I'm going to have to return it and get the 4. I'm pissed bc now I'm spoiled by the portability lol...but a Retina screen is a Retina screen.

Yes we would. Retina is marketing. This screen sucks and is worst in class of all 7-8" tablets.

Liar. The screen is beautiful. There is zero chance you changed your mind in the store. Also, do you really expect us to believe you were going to gift it to two others and now you're not? Are those two people as obsessed with pixels? I love this. Just like the guy who said he cancelled hit wife's order and returned his own. Definitely gives your garbage more weight if you cost Apple not 1, but 3 sales.

I feel you brother. Got my mini on Friday and I've been trying to love it (coming from iPad 1)

Today I left it at home drove over to the apple store and grabbed a 4, didn't even bother looking at the two in store. Brought it home fired it up, sat with both on my lap and did some side by sides and there is no comparison.

The clincher was handing both to wife and with iBooks open and asking which screen she preferred excluding the size of text. She has no idea about specs, versions or anything apple.

The form and weight of the mini are hands down the best handheld design ever. Put the new guts into the mini and ill buy it.

Better yet put the new bezel and case design on the full size and ill buy both.

So the mini is boxed up and tomorrow it will go back. I really wanted to like it but in the end that wasn't enough for me to keep it.

No. Fact is, you already bought a cheapo wannabe and are bent that the mini is out now. Sorry you can't afford the mini, because it is my favorite Apple product in a long time. You're missing out. Enjoy whatever alternative you're talking yourself into tolerating.

I never understand that. It is like saying people cannot tell the difference between HDTVs and non HDTVs.

Wasn't the iPad 1 screen blurry? After all, it didn't have retina. I'm surprised you could tolerate it for so long.

Of course your wife preferred the retina screen. Who wouldn't? It's better. Still no reason to not have a mini. I have both., and its the mini that I reach for.

Ok dude you need to dial down the tone. You may or may not be trying to be a sarcastic ass, but that's how you're coming across. So put on some big boy pants and have a decent dialog.

Yes. My iPad one screen was low res, especially next to iphone 5. And I kept an anti glare screen protector on it so even more so.

But truth be told that's now why I wanted to replace it. I was tired of it crashing at random times far to often. I was tired of waiting for web pages to load or my workplace app not loading properly.

The mini met that requirement and as I mentioned it was awesome to hold. That said 2 generation old tech on a brand new product doesn't cut it for me.

Guess what, everyone is entitled to his or her opinions and choices. This board is about sharing each others points of views. Your job is not to convince anyone there choice is right or wrong.

You'd have to be blind not to notice retina. And I just exchanged it for a 4. The guy in the store said many have returned it (uneducated) and asked why their iPhone screen looks better...and it's smaller. So people aren't stupid, they noticed. The guy then went to said he'd wait until retina on the mini...and then said apple completely botched the iPad 3. He said he loves where he works but he's not going to defend Apple's mistakes. Made me feel ALOT better about my decision to get the 4.

I sure did...sorry to disappoint you. (by the way, eff you for calling me a liar)

I went to the store over lunch Friday....looked at it, played with it - decided I didn't like it enough to buy it. I will likely still buy one for my daughter and one for my mother-in-law, neither of which care about the resolution as much as I do and won't care (or likely even know) when a higher resolution model comes out.

But I decided to wait for the Mini 2. I waited for this thing for months, I can wait some more.

I played with a mini yesterday at an Apple store. let's just say it made me appreciate my "outdated" iPad3 all that much more.

I too have returned my mini. Wanted to like it but the screen just wasn't good enough. My mini was a gift but I didn't want my family wasting their money. Back to the iPad 3 I go. :)

Agreed

I'm not bitching...it's crazy how I make a lot of valid points and now "I'm bitching". I think a lot of people can stand behind this product because its Apple...but releasing anything other than iMacs/Macbooks without Retina is a joke and you know it. If you (or anyone else) love the iPad Mini then go ahead...I'm not stopping you. I'm just making some valid points.

Op -- I returned mine yesterday. The web-browsing was terrible for my eyes.

Money is not the issue. A quality screen is the issue. I did buy a mini, an ipad 4 and a retina pro this weekend thank you!

Returned my mini today too. Loved it, but Safari made my eyes feel dizzy. Tried it for the last two days and could not get past it.

Will be buying the iPad 4 (new iPad) with Cellular when that comes out.

I am also returning the mini. Cant justify paying $350 on a small tablet and not have a retina display which apple is more than capable of putting in.

BS and speak for yourself. Show us the data that "most people would never notice the resolution difference".

To me, and many others posting on here, we see a difference. A big difference. And no, it's not marketing. This is real. The ppi in Retina makes the screens... the images and text so much crisper and clearer with virtually zero pixelation. There's a lot of science behind the screens.

Anybody who doesn't notice a difference either has bad eyesight, is lying, or is such a delusional fanboy that they're rendered incredulous.

Hmmm. The screen is not beautiful. I saw it with my own 2 eyes this morning. It is OK, but saying it's beautiful is a bit much. You like what you spent over $300 for. We get it. It's called pride. Myself, I walked into the Apple Store this morning with credit card in hand and I left holding only my credit card. It's an awesome device, not doubt. But the screen is the worst part of it.

----------

Bought 2 online and 1 in the store ha. Giving the Mini to my parents.

Horrible son. I would cut you out of the will. J/k.

they should have made 2 versions of the ipad mini, a non-retina for $229 and a retina for $329.

Then I'm inclined to say that maybe you got a bad mini. I'm 30 years old and the screen looks fine to me. There is no way that it could be killing your eyes if you were to have gotten one like mine.
