i see a road rage incident waiting to happen. but i never thought someone going under the speed limit would get a case of road rage. chill dude, drive the speed limit. life's too damn short for steaming on road rage.

...

I never thought that's why you did it actually, you gave (and then modified) your reasons, and I accept them as you give them. However my point was it makes sense to you, but not to other road users. Just like their actions bother you only because you assume you understand them.

I'm not going to say you need to modify your driving style, but I wouldn't go talking about how crap other road users are in such absolute terms when it could be your actions provoking them, albeit unwittingly.

And you still didn't answer the question.
I was looking for the words to say what I was thinking about this - and, oh look, there they are... thanks mpw. :p :D

Just like the James Bond films where he has that tricked out Lotus with the machine gun that pops out of a hidden compartment. Of course mine wouldn't be using real bullets; I was thinking blanks, or something that would give a scary muzzle flash. It would pop out of a compartment from under my truck lid.

Last year or the year before when I was driving in Coventry, I ended up following the James Bond Jag down the London Road, complete with machine gun that popped out the back, and a grill full of missiles... the whole shebang. ;)

<edit>This was the one. ;)

You should give Jaguar Whitley a call, you might be able to pick it up cheap now that Ford are having to flog the company. :p

Ahhh, gotta love Americans... so easily offended by nudity etc but every little annoyance can be resolved with guns

</sarcasm>

My take on this is that (no offense) the OP is being just as selfish as someone who knows that going 10 mph over the limit would also successfully get them around town. The roads are a system where we all have to work together. The goal is Point A to Point B, safely, and efficiently.

When I see a driver sticking to some arbitrary system of their own, rather than just going with the flow (either fast or slow), that's asking for trouble. It's downright self-righteous. I could be all self-righteous too - my way IS the highway - but I like to think I'm a more flexible person than that.

I'd be pretty unhappy driving behind you.

Edit - dcv's guns in america comment is great

Driving under the speed limit does have its dangers for other drivers. Additionally drivers that slam on there brakes every 5 seconds to maintain an exact 35mph is annoying and dangerous.

I think the real question here is:
Do you drive at, or below, the speed limit on the highway, in the left lane with no one in front of you for miles and still want to mount a machine gun on your car to take care of the tailgaters?

Still avoiding an answer then.

Maybe because it's a stupid analogy, the OP is talking about people getting antsy about 10 mph, you are talking about a 30 mph difference, which is more than half the speed in question. I live in a small town, and the speed limit on main street is 35. Often, people in town, in particular the members of the nearby farming communities drive 25-30 through town, and that's not a problem. But if they stayed at 25 when they got out of town and the speed limit was 55 or 65, then that would be a problem.

******** questions don't deserve answers

Driving under the speed limit is somewhat understandable if there are two lanes. If there is only one, be respectful and drive the speed limit.

I got rear-ended by a tailgater once. It wound up being slightly amusing as it just dented my fender in but out-and-out destroyed her ugly minivan.

:D

Maybe because it's a stupid analogy
Actually, it was quite valid. The OP stated that he drove 10mph below the limit, in what could be assumed to be his "comfort speed" in that instance. mpw merely asked what his reaction would be if he (MACDRIVE, which incidentally is an ironic user name given the thread) were to be behind someone going 10mph below his comfort speed, which would translate to 25mph in this case.

In any event, the actual speeds are unimportant. The fact is, the OP assumes, as noted before, that his speed is the "best" speed at which to drive, and that tailgaters had no right to be upset because obviously they didn't know any better. I (and, apparently, mpw) would be interested in knowing how the OP would react to being behind someone driving much more slowly than he would like.

I just want to say, MACDRIVE, if I am ever stuck behind you on the road, you are going to see a whole 'nother dimension of tailgating going on.

The one thing that gets in my craw are people that hit the breaks to stay right at the speed limit. All I see are break lights.

My gripes are usually idiotic parkers more than idiotic drivers. My favorite weapon against them is a pad of fake parking tickets. If they park their huge SUV so it sticks over BOTH sides of a parking space marked "Compact", or they park their sports car centered on the line between spaces so they take TWO parking spaces, you can scare them with a note on their windshield that looks official but says "If I had the power to ticket you for your inconsiderate parking habits, I would."

Tee hee.

For those tailgaiters, we down in Q Lab will try making you some giant repelling electromagnets.

Tsk, you americans. Always thinking of the biggest, most expensive way of doing things.

Take a leaf out of Britains book; just stop your car (blocking 2 lanes of traffic at least) and start a good old fashioned punch-up.

I second this motion.... but in Bristol, you're probably just as likely to get a gun pulled on you as you would be in the States

Seems like it from here, that's aaaallllllll I'm sayin' ;)

Are you serious?

Well I assume you are British based on your location.

So I assume you shower maybe once a week and you're teeth are as crooked as a used car salesman. If you would like to further discuss this, perhaps we shall over a nice cup of tea and some biscuits.

:;) :p :D

I want to mount a machine gun on my car

Hell, I don't blame you! The sucker works.

No one tailgates in Iraq :p

If, MACDRIVE, you are going below the speed limit for whatever reason (admirable and logical so they appear), and not signalling for cars to pass you, then you are a potential menace (even without the machine gun).

I wish I could drive at my comfort speed. I wish all drivers would signal before they turn. No one does, so I just don't drive.
