It's metal. Definitely not plastic. Why would they put on the small, black plastic part to lower interference? Just wasting time and money.

It's metal.
Because it adds to the metal effect?

Think about it. If it were really metal, wouldn't there be more left after blending it than a pile of dust and the metal bezel? Seems that the bezel was the only substantial piece of metal there. The back blended into a fine powder because it is, in fact... PLASTIC. ;)

edit: here's another link, talking about engraving the original iPhone. Notice the part where they how how easy it was to engrave the SOFT PLASTIC?

edit 2: and another, more detailed link. 'Nice plastic that etches white-ish.' That's right, PLASTIC. Not metal. ;)

I liked the metal. I like the curve and the glossyness of the plastic though, but the metal back didn't get dirty, which wins it for me.

I'm pretty sure the next iPhone will lose it's plastic back. About 80% sure.

Thin metal doesn't turn into a fine powder like that either, mate. ;)

But you're right - the plastic back of the original iPhone looks MUCH better than the plastic on the 3G.

Seems like apple could do the same aluminum finish on the iPhone like the new macbooks and have the black on the front of the iPhone around the screen like it is now. That would complete the product lineup with all their products having the same general design. Seems like something Steve would do.

I'd buy that iPhone in a heartbeat.

I think the idea of the aluminum back tapered like the 3G model is a great idea. Although, I currently have the white and appreciate the fewer smudges that it has over the black.

I didnt think I would like the white back on my iPhone after having the metal back but I do like it more now that I have it. Its also not as slippery.

I much prefer my first gen as far as aesthetics go. But, for the 3G, it's white all the way.

And I don't buy that the first gen is plastic. At all.

I want the shape and flush headphone jack of the iPhone 3G with the texture and color of the original iPhone. I also do NOT like how easily the 3G cracks... especially since it cracks for no reason. I also like the speakers of the 3G.

You don't 'buy' that the first iPhone had a plastic back? You'd rather believe that metal (aluminum, presumably) grinds up into a fine black powder after thirty seconds in a blender (while the metal bezel is simply bent and mangled - but intact)???

I think what you've got is typically referred to as "denial." ;)

aaaahh, the old 'white is for girls'. I suppose that all of the old ibooks/imac g4 and g5's, and of course most of the ipods sold in the past were for girls only.

i'd probably say that white is more likely for those who want higher storage, have more money to spend up front, or perhaps just want something...a bit different?;)

with you pal... White means more orginal and unique.

if original was plastic how come when people drop them it dents instead of cracks?

I don't know. But metal doesn't dissolve into fine powder after thirty seconds in a blender. At least not in the reality I'm familiar with. If I'm not mistaken, it also doesn't etch white (like plastic) when engraved. ;)

special metal apple imported from mars?

but really, that guy could have thrown some dummy phone and kept the real one for himself because he loves it and never wanted to blend it in the first place!! he probably edited the video on his mac pro so u couldnt tell :D

So basically what we see from the data is that its 50% 50% old vs. new slightly leading is new (black and white combined).... very interesting.

Odd. I would think that more people would prefer the much nicer plastic on the original. Maybe it's just the 3G's shape that people prefer.

Again, the old back was metal. Solid metal. It wasn't coated plastic or anything like that, it was a piece of metal.

Right. A solid piece of metal that was ground into fine powder after thirty seconds in a blender.

You might want to watch those "Will it blend" videos again. ;)

Maybe you guys are talking about a different video but in the "Will it blend?" video I saw the guy was supposed to blend the original iPhone but he blended the 3G instead.

Since the original iPhone never came out in here I have only seen a few live and never had a chance to really hold one so I don't know how it feels. But although I love my 3G I really like the look of the original.

Also I think I have a soft spot for it since it was the first iPhone, so it's special and it's kinda iconic. Like the white iPod.

We're talking about the original iPhone.

At the end of the video, notice the ONLY large metal part in the glass? The bezel. The rest of the iPhone (including the plastic back) blended into black powder. ;)
