OK, unless he raises his offer to $2500 cash, I'm keeping the phone.

First, for the first time in my life, I don't need the money that badly.
Second, my birthday is next week, and this is my bday gift
Third, I never get to get the cool stuff on launch day. I want that "I got the shiny thing you want" feeling at least once.

HAHA epic WIN.. you need 1976.50 to come out even.. so $2500- 1976.50 will yield you $523.50 cash money!!!

you're missing the fact that he has to have another subsidized plan to use to come out on green on this deal. if not, it's a bad deal... PLUS the 2 month wait (yes i heard as far as November delivery dates now)

This is not an upgrade, this is a new line on my wife's Verizon account.

If it came to it, I could pay the early termination on this line, create a new account for another phone (delivered in November) and then merge our separate accounts together to get the family plan.

----------

right, this happened

You don't believe me?

Well, then you can't buy my $3000 iPhone either!

if u do early termination, im guessing no charge for the first few days? so if you cancel, and create a new family plan, you'd get another subsidized phone for wifey? if so then yes do it!

Ok, update...

He just came by my desk to tell me that I missed out, he just bought one off eBay for $1200.

Said "Hey, that's awesome. Hope you don't get scammed."

His face fell and he said "That could happen?"

Yeah, more money than brains. And most of the people that work here are so damn smart. For shame...

Not only could he get scammed, but the delivery date could be pushed back. If the delivery date gets pushed the buyer will probably go ballistic and make all kinds of demands for a refund. He could even open up an eBay/PayPal dispute. Potential for general ugliness: high.

He is such an idiot.

If someone wanted to buy my 64Gb 6+ for 1200 I would. But thats the minimum and I would have to know them. Aint selling such a high ticket item on craigslist.

OMG.. that is unheard of. i wonder if i can tout my phone like that too.

well here's the deal. if you sell it, you will have to make up 528.94 for your initial payment. so unless you have another upgrade to use to buy the phone with then its not a good deal.

1500 (offer)- 528.94 (purchase price of the subsidy) = 971.06.

you've already used your upgrade, so unless you have another way of purchasing the phone with subsidy 528.94, IF NO, then you're screwed and you'll have to pay full amount of $1005.94. Mind you, 971.06 will not cover that. IF YES, then you just made yourself 442.12 pocket money :)
Not quite.

You start with $0 and no phone.

Buy a phone on contract.
Result: $-528.94 and one phone

Sell the phone.
Result: $1500 - 528.94 = $971.06 and no phone

Buy a second phone at a later point on contract.
Result: $971.06 - 1005.94 = $-34.88

In the end, with no second contract:
$-34.88 (out of pocket) and one phone. You just saved yourself/made $494.06

---------------------------------------
If you have a second upgrade available:
You start with $0 and no phone.

Buy a phone on contract.
Result: $-528.94 and one phone

Sell the phone.
Result: $1500 - 528.94 = $971.06 and no phone

Buy a second phone at a later point.
Result: $971.06 - 528.94 = $442.12

In the end, with a second contract:
$442.12 (in your pocket) and one phone. You just made $442.06

Having a second upgrade available will save you $442.06 + 34.88 = $476.94 over not having an upgrade.
--------------------
If you sell at $1500 and don't have an upgrade, you are out $34.88 with a phone in hand.

If you sell at $1500 and have a second upgrade, you are up $442.06 and have a phone in hand.

If you don't sell your first phone, you are out $528.94 with a phone in hand.

Selling a $1000 phone for $1500? And you are asking if that is a good deal?
Hm? Did you ever have something called arithmetic at school?

Since I only make $12 an hour and am still in school, I would take that money. If I made over $75K a year then I'd say no thanks since $500 isn't a deal breaker for me.

How is

not a good deal?

Your analysis is wrong in that you aren't accounting for the phone and only the cash spent.

my analysis was right and the first to said it. just don't want to waste my time explaining it again.

You're completely wrong. I spelled it all out in my first post. Selling it for $1500 means he has $971.06 in pure profit. If he buys a 2nd phone at $1005.94, it means he spent only $35 bucks to end up with new phone, as opposed to spending $528 for one by not selling the original.

In both situations, OP has a new phone. However, by selling the original phone, OP is paying much less to have a new phone, and thus he is "making" money.
