One of the many advantages is ease of use and speed. All one must do is have a bit of patience to learn it. It's new & different, if you allow yourself to get frustrated you won't be successful. If however, you approach it with an open mind you will learn it faster & benefit from it.*

I think it's just that. The learning curve.

SWYPE as an option that you have to enable? Maybe. But as default? I personally don't see it happening.

The question is, do you really want to spend all that time learning how to use Swype?

That's an easy question to answer. Yes... I happily invested a few hours to save far more than that in the future. Why did I spend the time it took to obtain a masters degree? Simple really... to substantially increase my income stream, and enjoy the undeniable pleasure of doing what I enjoy. The benefits of education are not to be underestimated.

Correction:
As just one example, the Samsung Galaxy S, and it's variants sold in the USA, do _not_ "swap out" the keyboard for SWYPE.

SWYPE comes pre-loaded as an additional option. It's use is also an option. For example, if you buy a Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) from AT&T, in Settings you have a choice of four keyboard layouts, plus SWYPE as an option. This is one of the undeniable advantages of Android. One gets a lot of choices free.
Correct. Same goes for the Droid X.

Roadblock! :D

Good point. ;)

Swype is great. It would be nice to have it as an option.
I agree. Or at least Apple's own variant of Swype.

With all due respect, you may have used it, but you've not learned it.

I don't need your respect, but I'd like it if you'd believe me. It's not faster for everyone. I type 115 words per minute on my laptop keyboard and am incredibly fast on my iPhone. I used Swype a lot when I had my Nexus One and it was simply never as fast/accurate for me. Did I get faster with practice? Yes, but I simply don't think that I can enter text any faster than I currently can with the iPhone's keyboard.

I'd rather improve the autocorrect feature. It's already pretty good as it is, but I would like it to be better.

But that will never happen.
Apple tells you what is best for you. They will not let you figure it out.

For a lot of people swype is faster and better. For others they like the thumb method.
Me personally I am not sure if I would use swype. Hell I like my Blackberry hardware keyboard and would not be fond of giving it up.

That would be interesting...

Good point.

Yes, I agree. It is a fun and exciting new input method. The question is, do you really want to spend all that time learning how to use Swype?

Yeah spending 5 minutes to learn something new sure is painful

My history iphone 3G > iphone 3GS > Motorola Droid > iphone 4

During my brief time with Verizon (no service at workplace, but everywhere else was fine), I had downloaded and used Swype RELIGIOUSLY. It was awesome. And I'm FAST on the iPhone keyboard, really fast. But using Swype was faster, easier, and the predictive input was amazing.

It's truly one of the only things I miss when I came back to the iPhone. That, and the 'refund' option in the marketplace if you bought an app and it turned out to suck.

I never really bothered with Swype since I bought my Android device. Right now I'm using Smart Keyboard pro which is the Iphone keyboard. I just tried Swype after reading this thread and I think it's pretty cool, but not something I would want to get use to using because I don't want to get dependent on it. I rather use a standard keyboard.
Anyways I have Lock 2.0, Smart Keyboard pro, and btunes and with a Iphone skin from the market place I can have my Iphone back if I wanted to. Android is so customizable.

Sorry, but being able to choose between a crappy keyboard and an unusable keyboard is NOT an advantage over the iPhone's one highly usable keyboard.

Plus we have an Emoji keyboard and you don't, so nanner nanner nanner.

Whatever. How do you think I found out about Swype and Swiftkey, then? Seems like I figured that out by myself... :p

No. It takes much longer than 5 minutes to learn it... fluently. Even Swype supporters are saying the same thing. It's not that easy.

That's why I sent that email to Steve. I'm hoping Apple is currently working on their own Swype competitor... :apple:

P.S. By the way, I never knew you could return an app? I wish the App Store did that. :(

Yes, you can. You can get a refund easily with anything you purchase at the Market. It has to be within the refund period though. Some will allow 24 hours, some will only 30 minutes (like for a game).

Everything is wrong with the stock Android keyboard. Everything.

The thing with Android is that there are many options out there for keyboards. Find one that suits you best. :) Swype is my personal favorite and I'm glad that it's offered. I'm not a very fast 2-thumb texter, but Swype makes everything a lot easier for me.

Swype is clearly faster if u type with one hand. Two hands... it depends. If ur typing a sentence with a lot of big words then swype is faster. Small short words can really slow u down unless u know swyping tricks.

Whatever. How do you think I found out about Swype and Swiftkey, then? Seems like I figured that out by myself... :p

Finding out about it yes but Apple tells you want is best for you on the iPhone by blocking everything.

Apple the anti choice.
"We think for you so you don't have too"

Or "we present you with the option that is the easiest and most efficient for 90% of our users and implement it in a way that is intuitive and doesn't need to be fiddled with." it's not like this approach is new, they do the same kind of thing with OSX.

I don't care THAT much for it, but I could swear there was an app just like swype. When the app store first launched I remember downloading it, but I don't have it anymore or remember what it was called. It just wasn't a part of the default keyboard.

It is called shape writer. It's gone through many pricing models. It is neat but not used.

I only used swype for about 5 minutes and realized how much faster keyboard input could get after a bit of practice.

Swype is pretty awesome. I doubt that apple will implement it anytime soon because it isn't IP that they can control & exploit (and lets face it, that is their MO these days).

Apple always badmouths stuff until they include it (copy and paste? multi-tasking, etc).

Apple is the new Microsoft. I'm glad that I don't give money to SJ. That guy is a d***!

As others have said, definitely not happening. Everything about the iPhone is molded specifically by Apple for Apple users. They'd never use an outside technology for fundamental interaction unless they bought it and tweaked it the way they wanted.

It all comes down to personal preference. I've had some iphone friends like the htc keyboard neuter than apple. Swype had taken me 3 installs and several hours to get very quick at it. I'm still faster with the htc keyboard. Swift key is too slow. If you type to fast it won't register since it is not multi touch it seems. Choices are good though, always.

Even in OSX I think it is pretty poor how little choice they give you. Default is fine for 90% of the people but little tweaks are always nice.

Plus the saying
Apple is the Anti-choice
"We choose for you so you don't have too"

is a lot easier to say than yours. Mine sounds like a marketing phase :-D

Great. Thanks. I'm hoping Apple will add that feature to the App Store eventually.

No. Absolutely retarded.

True enough, but they do look at their options. Steve said that they've looked at Swype before...
