Holy crap! I will definitely keep 128-320kbps.

Unless you have a great pair of headphones and an amp to drive them, you will mostly likely not notice the difference between 320kbps and Apple Lossless.

Hahaha nice, I wasn't talking about you but I guess it would apply to you also. I suppose when you love Apple, you love Apple.

Sorry guys, do you mind coming back on topic?

I am just worried now about my Ipod Touch 2G 32 GB. Did apple say anything at all? And I still dont know, how I can really recognize the problem.

If I play a certain thing once and surf a web page and it happens and a second time I do it, it doesnt, how can you be sure that its hardware related?

I mean maybe its a problem as the chips between the 32 and 16 GB differ but the ipods running the same software...?

So far apple has been completely silent on the issue, other than some posters on the apple.com forum saying that when they called support, the responses ranged from there is no record of this issue to they are aware of it and working on it. As for hardware/software related, it's anyones guess. While the OP stated his 16 gig didn't do it, posters in the apple forums have said their 16 gigs were doing it. I'm tempted myself to rip a couple cd's in lossless, and check see if I encounter the bug, and if so take it to my local apple store to pick their "genius" minds on it.

AFAIK from the Apple discussion forums, this is happening to all 2nd gen iPod touches in all capacities. Whether Apple is aware of the issue and working on a fix is anyone's guess.

To get Apple's attention to this problem, the best way we can do is return the units, demand a refund, and hurt them where it hurts the most: in the pocket book. I am sure Apple will notice this very quickly. I know for me, the iPod touch provides other great functionalities that is very hard to replace with another device. But I still plan to wait for the fix before my warranty expires, then send it in if no fix is coming.

So is it only supposed to happen with lossless-format?

Yeah, well, my problem is, my one is engraved and its just 5 days old. But as my MBA will probably have a screen problem (as all I saw so far did) I would be really angry if the ipod came with problems too!

PS: Since when is the ipod 2nd gen 32 gb actually on the market????

From what I've read the issue is pretty much exclusive to lossless music files, so unless you have your files that way, you shouldn't have to worry about it. I have all mine at 320 and never had a skip. The Touch 2nd G was announced Sept 9th, and showed up at the stores soon after.

Thanks so much, I hope so. I will try if I recognize it at mine too.

When its only lossless, it seems for me more likely to be a sw-issue.

thanks

read speed?

Could it be that the read speed for the 32GB memory chip used in the 2nd gen is slower than the 16GB? if that's the case it's hardware issue and can't be fixed with software updates.

I have 32GB and everything plays perfectly, but I don't have any music ripped above 320KbPS.

Could Propel, the thread starter please verify, that it only happens to songs

- with lossless format

or

- above 320 kbps etc?

THANKS

This is what I got from the apple discussion forum, but I would still appreciate an answer from propel:

The second generaton iPod Touch is defective when playing Apple Lossless encoded music.

Summary: the second generation (2G) iPod Touch with firmware 2.2 has a defect that prevents it from playing Apple Lossless encoded Compact Disks. The defect causes the sound to skip (or drop out) several times over during the playing files of typical pop-music duration. The defect is also present in firmware 2.1.1 with the 2G iPod Touch. This defect does not appear when the same files are played on the iPod Classic 6th Gen MB147c with Firmware 1.1.2 PC, iTunes 8 version 8.0.2.20 on Windows Vista, or Quicktime Player (Pro) version 7.5.5.

Details:

The device that skips with Apple Lossless is a 2G iPod Touch 32GB model MB533C with Firmware 2.2 (5G77a).

The following do not skip with Apple Lossless: Repeat DO NOT SKIP with Apple Lossless.

1) APPLE iPod Classic 6th GEN MB147C with Firmware 1.1.2 PC.

2) iTunes 8 version 8.0.2.20 running on Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1

3) QuickTime Player (Pro) Version 7.5.5 (249.13) QuickTime(TM) Version 7.5.5(990.7)

As far as I am concerned it is the same problem in the 32GB with every other version of the firmware.

This only happens to Apple lossless files. I have 30,115 of them. Over a 1TB of them so far. When I told Apple of my problem they said to downgrade them to 320kbps. Yeah right! Never going to happen. I use Shure E530 earbuds and they cost more than any ipod/itouch. I only listen to the best possible sound I can from these devices and I use a portable amp with all my ipods/itouches. So hopefully Apple fixes this problem very soon for those that use Apple's Lossless. Unless you have bad hearing and do not own highend buds you don't know what you are missing until you hear the best possible sound these can put out.

There is a bug that causes lossless files to skip. This has been duscussed quite a bit in the forum, as well as apples discussion forums.

....

Wow, thanks biikman for this. I thought I had screwed up something during the encoding process, but glad to hear that its a problem with the iPod Touch itself. I chimed in on that thread you linked to over here:

But what about if you listen to your iPod Touch in your car? For now, I have a cassette adapter but hope in my next car to have some sort of iPod connector.

It partly depends on how critical your ears are, and partly on the quality of the car speakers. It can make a difference if you have a good ear and speakers, but some crappy car speakers sounds like logitech computer speakers, thus diminishing the need for higher quality music. If you have a nice pair of headphones or good home audio system, try to listen to the same song using different bit rates. Start at 192kbp and work your way up. At any point you can't distinguish the difference between the two songs, take the lower bit rate. Try it with a few songs from each of the genres, and you'll probably find the bit rate that you'll be happy with.

I've already ordered the 32GB touch, which should arrive today (Wednesday.) Almost all of the 1,500-something songs in my library are iTunes protected AAC. I am not anticipating any trouble with it. :D If I do, it'll be a shame since the iPod touch really IS the be-all and end-all of portable music players. :apple:
