Reading a disc should not require that much power from a slim (aka mobile) drive that would require two usb ports.
Does the dvd filesystem become visible (is drive D: it)?

Only visible when there aren't any discs inserted it seems to drop form device manager when dvd is inserted.
I have a Y cable arriving tomorrow anyway as Asus Dosc mentiones connecting by Y cable which wasn''t provided.
It seems very intermittent indeed, what I didn't;t know before purchase is there are lots of Win10 probs.with the Asus writer -inlcuding unable to play DVD's.

I called Asus tech help this morning.
I have a Y cable arriving from Amazon today.
Asus kind advisor mentioned my model of drive does require Y dual usb2.0 cable from mini usb.
The other model which is similar only requires one single usb.
I explained my drive is listed under device manager then drops only when a dvd is inserted.
I have nothing to loose by trying the Y cable as no service available on the drive.
I could go the ebay return route if required.
@priitv8 -my drive. When listed is indeed D;

@priitv8

Received Miniusb to Y dual usb2.0 cable from Amazon today.
Amazing as I also ordered a blue ray movie which is playing fine.
I can only assume Asus Tech advisor was correct this mormning in advising the blue ray drive requires the dual usb cable which provides enough power.

Thanks maybe I'll try some blank discs in a while

I haven't read the guide via mac rumours -though a url might help.
What's the simplest way of copying a few movies from DVD writer to Ap4k t.v.
Do I need to find my ITunes library on win10 laptop -what do I use to transfer them to Ap4k t.v. And once transferred will they show in library with covers.
I'm planning ahead before purchasing external dvd writer, or is it best to save up for blue ray writer though I'm not sure if the movies I want are bailable via blue ray.
E.g. movies one of which is on iTunes-so I can purchase =The girl with the dragon tattoo -no copy required.

DVD rips I'll purchase the Movies :-
The Girl who played with fire
The Girl who kicked the hornets nest.

Thanks in advance for any guide, I have seen apps such as Plex though have never used them as yet.
[doublepost=1538293267][/doublepost]In addition to earlier request.
I've since searched and found all three movies are available for purchase on blue ray.

Is it an option to purchase external blue ray writer and transfer to Ap4k t.v..

Out of interest buddy - The Girl who played with fire is on iTunes in the US in HD. It may come to the UK in time
https://itunes.apple.com/us/movie/the-girl-who-played-with-fire-extended-edition/id474628221

Also The Girl who kicked the hornets nest IS ON iTUNES IN HD here in the UK!!!!!!!! English language version is available as well as Swedish
£5.99 to own in HD!!!!!!!!

Better cancel that BluRay disc and all of the time & effort and HUGE file that will be created from it!
[doublepost=1539634253][/doublepost]The whole trilogy is on iTunes UK in HD for £17.97 buddy!
May as well buy from iTunes and then have the luxury of streaming direct from Apple's servers on your Apple TV!

Refer to my previous post as blue ray drive is working from this afternoon.
If I had a Plex pass to upload todays mkv blue ray rip.
I must have been running a Plex trial last week as I cannot add anything to my Plex media library today.
Fun though going old school optical drive.
Thanks for the movie pointers 1st of which arrived via Asmazon today-blue ray The Girl withe The
Dragon Tagoo

My intention is to upload to Plex media sever to run from Plex Media app via Apple4k t.v.

Dunno what do you mean by Win10. Where your Plex server runs, should not matter.
Infuse runs on tvOS. You need the pro version for anything meaningful.

It all seems very very complicated and time consuming though when you could have saved all of that money and time and simply bought them in HD from iTunes and had them instantly.

Old skool discs for me belong in the 20th century :)

Thanks I was referring to Microsoft Windows 10 as I'm running any home server from i3 kabeylake laptop.
I'll take a look at Infuse pro version fro Appl,e 4k t.v. App Store as it looks as though I could use another upload or sharing programme from laptop.

Think I'm maybe starting to grasp basics ahead of 1st blue ray copy.
I since found 25gb discs available in local p.c. World.

Note only that-if I were to use blue cloner6- Splits one Blu-ray movie (50G) to two blank BD-R/REs (25G).
As pcworld discs are 25gb -no other discs available.

This is today's purchase This afternoon.

Managed 5 mins of blue ray rip to ssd+5 mins dvd rip(to 4k format)-ssd.
Went well, noticed my 4k from dvd 5 mins used 1gb approx.

As my initial 5 mins rips were successful, I need to invest very soon.
1. Tipard blue ray converter s/ware-37 Uk pounds
2. External hdd or if I wait until 2019-maybe external. Ssd's could reduce in cost
3. Haven't yet purchased blank discs-for the purpose of trying writer functions

Maybe I'll try. 4K blue ray in very near future.

Since purchased some 25gb blue ray disks for testing writing functions.
Any advice on how I shrink 45gb movie to fit 25gb disk.
You’d need to reencode the video to half bitrate (HandBrake comes to mind).
Then I’d take TSMuxeR to mux new video track with wanted audio and subtitle and chapter tracks into new BD image (BDMV folder or ISO file). Then burn it to disc.
Skipping useless audio and subtitle tracks also decreases size.

I've been playing with handbrake today.
What do you mean by half bite rate -which settings am I making this change in handbrake.
Is that like changing bit rate from 24bps to 12 bps -though maybe that's frame rate, I don't have any bit rate experience.

I'm learning very fast on useless audio tracks as my 1st 5 mins movie earlier today to make mkv had audio descriptive on through whole 5 mins-I since been more careful removing unnessecary sounds etc.

I use MediaInfo to check the bitrate of the original file.
Then in HB you use the quality control to set target bitrate.
https://handbrake.fr/docs/en/1.1.0/workflow/adjust-quality.html

It is possible to encode with explicit bitrate limit, but I use constant quality setting and the slider value between 25-19.
It will take some trial-and-error tests to find the value that will produce the desired average output bitrate.

My 1st blue ray to make mkv is failing
Scsi error - MEDIUM ERROR:L-EC UNCORRECTABLE ERROR

Only maybe 50 mins into almost 2 hours required.
I'm going to make mkv a dvd today as maybe the blue ray discs is at fault or does it matter that it's dual layer.
Tempted to purchase one of the chargeable solutions-Tipard - 5 mins trial was excellent with blue ray +dvd to 4k effect.

Thanks I had seen handbrake settings though would have been guessing.
Trial and errors have been most of my weekend- I daren't open blue ray disks yet-best to get used to as much software and settings 1st.

Edited

Going to purchase lens cleaner this morning-nothing to loose.

Couldn't resolve mkv scsi read errors.
Reverted to Tigard dvd copy -approx +20% into blue ray movie copy.
Not sure what quality to expect other than the settings full hd 1080p.
This is going +3 hrs whereas mkv was attempting 2.5 hrs approx.
Hopefuly this Tigard Effexor time is as nice as free 5 mins trial which seemed to copy and play as expected.
Such a simple copy app, maybe this small 37 U.K. pounds could prove value.
Tried a DVD cleaner before purchasing Tigard -cleaner ran -and mkv errors continued.
Considering if it is maybe the movie disk -not sure until tipard hopefuly completes.

Hi

Medium error indeed leaves me impression that there is something wrong with the physical disc itself.
These days all drives read DL discs, but the DL media is more susceptible to errors, that is true.
Just try a different source disc.
PS How is your drive behaving with UHD blurays? Does it read them?

Thanks I've given in with 1st movie.
It was brand new from Amazon failing at approx 25% copy both free+paid apps.
Thanks nteresting if I watch movie today hopefully it does'nt skip or freeze etc part way through.

UHD will be a week or two to purchase.
Think I'll try another blue ray today though it is possible that Asus latest firmware has added copy protection.

@priitv8

doesn't look good

How well does this drive play uhd/4k blu-ray discs?
Answer:
Im afraid it doesn’t. Its a pure blu-ray drive/dvd burner. You need to look for a drive that plays 4K blu-rays which Amazon also sell, but they are a bit more expensive and might require a USB 3 type C/thunderbolt to run as the data rate is higher than standard blu-ray

There are only two UHD-compatible computer Blu-ray drives on the market right now, both by Pioneer, neither officially sold in the US or UK, only in Japan. They also have *VERY* specific requirements to play back UHD discs - you need certain generations of Intel CPU (7th generation or newer) using the internal Intel graphics. If you are on a machine using a discrete graphics card/chip, it won't work. And you need the machine's BIOS to have a certain security driver. And there is only one piece of software that can play them - CyberLink PowerDVD.

Lastly, even if you can play them, there is currently zero software that can rip a UHD Blu-ray.

Thanks I have gen7 i3 2.4 ghz
Intergrated graphics 620 intel
I didn't hold much hope with uhd blue ray.
More immediate concern is girl with dragon tattoo failing to mkv or copy to ssd @45% critical read error
Non uhd of course.

Dude why all this time when you can buy the HD version on iTunes for £5.99? I sincerely do not believe that you'll see any picture difference on a 43" TV. iTunes HD film looks amazing on our LG B7 OLED 55. We were watching 'My Art' from iTunes HD last Thursday and the sound quality was truly incredible. We were all commenting throughout the whole film - it was so crystal clear!

Not at all! USB2.0 has bitrate of 480Mbps. That's 4 times more than UHD BD is able to emit!

Yep, we are talking about ripping, not playing back on computer.
And yep, makeMKV does rip UHD blurays, with a small limitation (preloaded keys), but the workflow seems to be oiled already. The list of known-good BDXL drives you can find on internet pretty easily.
