I saved the $100 and bought the i5 with a 512GB. You dont have to get the i7 in order to get the 256GB. I decided on the 512GB since its cheaper than the 480GB from OWC.

Actually it isnt.

You're paying $800 for the 512GB SSD upgrade.

From stock you pay an additional $300 for 256GB (from 128GB) and THEN pay another $500 to go from 256GB to 512GB.

All the while Apple keeps the memory you've already paid for.

Good job we love them, because not many companies could get away with this!

How much media do you folks carry with you? With Cloud computing coming all of your Media will be stored with Apple pretty soon, right? Is anyone really carrying around an external drive as opposed to swapping at home before a trip to have the right media on hand?

With many phone contracts downloading 1 GB of data costs real money. My music comes in at about 0.15 GB per hour; that is real money. Video is much, much more expensive.

I have the 13 inch 2011 MBA with the 128GB SSD. I also have a 2.5 inch external drive for iTunes and pics. I blog on this machine, currently have 75GB free on the SSD. Carrying the external drive in my notebook messenger bag isn't a big deal, it's quite small. I have my external drive in a silver enclosure from OWC, it matches the Air nicely. Don't be put off by the thought of carrying an external based on size, after all you will most likely be carrying a 13 inch in some sort of bag anyway & the bit of extra weight is really minimal.

Bizarre, illogical Phrase of the Week Award. You have not 'already paid for anything'.

What is illogical about it? When you upgrade to 256 or 512gb, Apple is not refunding you for the stock 128gb that they charged for in the base price.

How so? Please do explain.

Would it make you feel better if they gave you a $200 credit for the 128 gig SSD and charged you $1,000 for the 512 gig SSD? $800 for the 512 gig SSD is the NET cost to the purchaser.

You'd be surprised how many people think this way. I sold boats and RVs for a while. Many people would be happy to pay more net as long as they felt like they were getting more for their trade in.

Good point. I've got unlimited data on my work iPhone, so I don't think about it. I also had unlimited data on my gen 1 iPad for two years. Now I'm on Verizon and yes I've got to be careful how much data I download on the iPad. Video will wipe me out in no time. But so many years of unlimited data has gotten me to not think about it until now.

I suspect data prices will drop fairly quickly though. And wifi is becoming more and more common at work, restuarants, schools and private homes. So you are often in reach of it.

If you haven't used an Air, you're in for a pleasant surprise. It is MUCH faster for most stuff all the time than your beefier machines like your desktop. Stuff just feels more well oiled and responsive.

Games bad. Massive CPU projects not so good. Plain old computer stuff... Beauty!
Couldn't have put it better myself.

i5 vs i7

Is the i7 that much better? Considering both are dual core chips?

I'm sure this has already come up, just couldn't find a good answer on here explaining briefly what the benefits of i7 are.

you will only notice the difference with the i7 if you are using very CPU intensive apps at the same time. Most will never notice.

I had the i5/4GB/128GB at first and then switched to the i7.

I can't really tell the difference in speed. Both are super fast, thanks to the SSD.

I mainly use Chrome, iPhoto, Snapseed, and Pixelmator.

Obviously. So how much is "that much" Sherlock?

That is a bit vague not denying that. Its just that you stated "that much better than what?" when what you meant was "how much is that much?". 2 completely different questions. Either way I am sure there are a number of threads on this topic. Just scroll the first 3 pages of the MBA forum and you will find them.

The i7 adds a little extra future proofing on performance for those of us who may keep our computers a while.

When at one point the i5 feels too slow, so will the i7. I really don't see their point in buying the i7 unless you actually harness those extra percent of power it provides.

Thank you, but I am not interested in finding these threads. I already know i5 < i7.
