Dude, joking ;) Just poking fun at how absurd it is to be worried by something as small as worrying about iAds wasting all my data

Sorry.....right over my head.

I see a big future for ad-blocking apps. First thing that will happen, someone will learn to block the IPs of the iAd servers.

Good for you, but that is not my experience. My usage falls between 1 - 2 GB. I don't stream music. I don't view youtube videos unless on wifi. I don't stream video. I use email, viewing attachments, use Feeder for RSS feeds, and do limited internet browsing. I looked back for the last 6 months and every month is at least 1 GB of usage.

It′s not like you HAVE to watch ads.

Btw, I have 512MB monthly plan, and I don′t make fuss about it. Americans seem to be much spoiled..even 2GB is not enough to them.

The problem I have with the lowering of the data caps is the lowering of standards. Someone needs to innovate so others can catch up. I don't care if we're still the highest, its just a sign of getting lazy by cutting back.

i don't know about the data usage of the iAds but i'm kinda anxious to view them. LOL, i've never been anxious to see advertisement though

Absolutely! If ads cause you to run over your limit, people will do whatever they can do try to block them. Wish there was some way to tell how much of the traffic is related to ads though, not just on an iPhone, but on OSx.

They better not be counting any advertising they send to me in the usage of my data plan. I simply wouldn't tolerate that and neither should anybody else.

Beware!

iAd is going to be data intense with all the streaming video, etc.

And in effect, some will be PAYING to watch the ads.

No longer will AT&T sell unlimited data plans on iPhone.
Don't watch those iAds!!!! It will use up your precious limited data.

If enough people threaten that they will be less likely to click on iAds due to it using up our data allowance, maybe Apple will convince AT&T to eliminate the stupid data limits.

there's already ads in apps on the iPhone, iAds is just replacing them with more efficient and less buggy ads.

as i have said elseware, its baffling how people seem to think that iAds means there will be more adverts, there's already adverts on apps, this is just to replace them....

Wow. Amazing how folk try to soon anything apple does on a good light.

No one has ever said iads will be more "efficient".
They are supposed to be more immersive, better, more entertaining, which certainly means higher data comsumption. Possibly even with video.

200mb can be 30 minutes of video a month.
ATT is hoping for overages.

wow, amazing how some people are so oblivious to stuff before talking about it....

watch the video from the event earlier in the year about os4. they will be more efficial as they won't pull you out of the app you are in, like most ads currently do, they only use what you click on, looking mostly like little banners you click on then watch, rather than current ads that are full screen things that stay on screen for 10 secs or so, or worse, some force you to watch a video, with iAds, you have more choice not to...

so tell me, doesn't that sound more efficient??

Good god. We lived through a decade of dial-up AOL without this exact same thing becoming an issue then. Why does everyone act like this is brand new today?

Yes but:

You know what else I pay for?
The paper that Newsweek prints ads on. You aren't limited to a certain number of pages. You'll always get the whole paper.
The cable TV connection even when I'm watching ads. You aren't limited to a certain number of minutes a month, you get unlimited viewing.
Road taxes even when I'm looking at billboards. The road isn't going to go away.

Do these all suck? Sure. But why are we getting all worked up over one more example of the same thing? You all act like you've never seen an ad before.

No one is complaining about the presence of the ads. They are complaining because the ads will be taking up their limited resources (bandwidth). We no longer get unlimited bandwidth like you would with the situations you described. You aren't limited to a certain number of hours watching TV. So TV ads don't take up a limited resource, and neither do any of the other situations you described.

I don't think the ads in apps actually take up that much data. You have to click the ad before you actually download the whole thing. Otherwise isn't still just a small banner like the old apps?

So buy your apps and get the ad-free version and you won't need to worry about iAds at all.

Or is this really about being too cheap to pay for apps as well?

From a personal perspective I won't buy apps that also include advertising. It's either free with ads or paid without or I'll skip that app and find something else.

You do make a good point. Either way we pay right? Either way the dev needs to get paid.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 2.2; en-gb; Nexus One Build/FRF50) AppleWebKit/533.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/533.1)

1. Don't use ad supported software and when possible, buy a paid version to support the dev.

Or

2. Don't click on the iAd and save on bandwidth (to the detriment of the developer).

Number 1 is preferable IMO.

iad is on the ipod touch too yet they dont even have a data plan. plus i doubt a few ads you wont click on will make you go over 2gigs. do any of you have any idea how much that really is?

Whenever you start to run an app that includes iAds, you could put the iPhone in Airplane mode. That shuts off the cellular radio so iAds cannot possibly download any ads, and accordingly, you cannot possibly incur any data usage charges for the downloading of those ads.

The downside is, you won't be able to receive any phone calls during this time either.

Apple really should have a simple setting (similar to "Airplane mode") which leaves phone calls enabled, but allows cellular data to be temporarily shut off.

Not as an enabler for people who want to weasel out of a data plan... But for people who are legitimately using a limited data plan, and want/need to avoid accidentally going into overages, or to avoid using any of their limited data quota for things that they never actually intended to download.

Er... they already do. Turn off mobile (cellular for the Americans) data in network settings.

I used iPhone browser to go in and delete the iAds folder and now I get none of that nonsense, just a blank spot where the ad was supposed to be.

While little ads do add up (sorry ), it's the sites that play video ads that concern me. I currently tether using a 120 MB plan and yes, it's quite easy to use up the allowance. I don't use it regularly enough to justify paying more for a larger plan, but those large video ads are a killer (I'll often immediately close the window and go to another site, before it can buffer too much data).
You have to block flash video from playing automatically. Install FlashBlock on Firefox and Click4Flash on Safari.

I smell a class-action lawsuit in the air.

Edit: Problem is, who do you sue? Can you hold AT&T responsible for the content of the website you visit?

I absolutely cannot stand this way of thinking. Why don't you be responsible for your own actions? How can you even imagine a class-action lawsuit. You are the person downloading the iAd-supported apps. You are responsible for any data charges you incur. If you don't want to see the iAds, then don't use the app.

WHOAH! Backup! I didn't say I would, but the fact is that we live in a letigious world.

To be honest, I'm no longer convinced someone will sue. They probably would have already.
