I can't believe ios 4 still isn't available on the ipad! that is ridiculous! it should have launched with ios 4. but whatever I guess I should just be glad that it is here now

My money is on timing and unexpected capabilities. The timing concerns the introduction of a new, fresh OS, right when competitors are are busy responding to old OS functionality. Then if Apple offers some completely unexpected capabilities, say something wildly radical like hard disk connectivity to iPad (not gonna happen.), Apple delivers a one-two punch. I have no idea what unexpected capability they might cook up, but if they do introduce something unexpected, bam! It would make it more difficult for competitors to catch up.

Nice!

I've been experimenting with ads for "free" Apps. Good to see iAd gaining some traction. I'm really curious about the revenue developers are seeing for more niche Apps. (not BBC or New York Times, but smaller indie type apps.)

I'm getting about a penny a week now. Maybe with the world opened up, it will be 2 pennies a week!

if there was something unexpected wouldn't we have seen it in all the beta releases? Yea there is nothing unexpected

Many people still hate ads, and also iAds, that part hasn't changed. The thing that has changed is the quality of those ads. iAds ARE better quality (when they're not advertising an app in the app store) than most other ads out there.

To be honest, I don't want any ads.

And to be double honest, 99.999999999999999% of ads are wasted on me, I can't think of anything I've seen in an advert that I've every actually bought.

If anything ads put me off buying things.

I'm running the 4.2 GM, which is what everybody is going to get soon. Nothing secret in it beyond what has already been reported.

There's the trick. Ads are not there to make you buy their product, at least not directly, they're there to inform you of their name, so that in the future, if you ever need their product, their name will be one of the first ones that comes to your head. It's called mindshare. Pretty powerful stuff.

If ads aren't in my face and are relevant then I don't mind them at all, it also means more apps can be free and hopefully the extra money can help developers produce better quality apps.

Pop up/flash ads are the worst and I think they are the reason you and everyone hates ads so much!

Wirelessly posted (iPod touch 16GB: Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8B117 Safari/6531.22.7)

This is good news. I'll admit that I prefer clicking on iAds compared to AdMob/Google Ads simply because they keep me in the app I'm in. That's less intrusive since I can leave the ad and continue within the app.

If so, that just goes to show how much I know about this stuff.

Well, in your defense, technically if it were something like using your iPad as a hard drive, that could be something not yet "turned on" by Apple that wouldn't otherwise be apparent (maybe in the final release of iTunes 10.1, a setting to "enable" it like with the classic iPods)

But I agree that they definitely aren't doing this particular one! :)

well this is good for apple and developers, and consumers also kinda. i mean, if you're gonna have ads in your apps, might as well be good ads. i just hope 4.2 goes live tomorrow

There is no inherent reason why iAds will be better. The reason why they are better now is because there are so few advertisers, most of them with the $$$$ to afford better agencies to produce them. If iAd becomes mainstream, the quality of the ads will become so as well.

iAd is part of the reason why the iOS is crippled and doesn't have Flash. In the long run, I doubt iAd makes much sense for advertisers: Android (and all the other platforms by 2011) support full Flash, and the advertising money will follow the larger audience.

The fact is, the lack of Flash will hurt iOS in the long run, even if it makes a few more $$$ for Apple now.

It's strange, and I cant believe I'm saying this, but I'm actually looking forward to seeing one, as I havent yet.

Secondly, I hope we eventually see this come to the Apple TV (again, crazy), as maybe the networks would start to jump on board if they could display ads easier.

I'm all for ads if it means i get good, free content.

Would iOS users really miss the advertising money? The lack of flash makes the user experience a hell of a lot better, and thats whats driving the sales as well.

Also do you really think the advertising money is going to stray away from an audience of potentially 250 million+ affluent customers in 2011?

iAd

I heard about iAds some many times and for a while now....but where is it? On what apps? I never saw it..if i need to pay attention to see it, it means it is not well set up...

You can try Kids Paint (if you have/are a kid).
You can try RetroCam (for simple black and white photo taking).

They are free anyway, try it!

Thank god!

I get 48k requests per week on iAds, but only 15k of them are USA.
That means I lose over 68% of potential ad impressions.

Checking today, I have indeed noticed fill rates in foreign countries.

Seriously the best news for me. Admob pays nothing compared to iAds.

Yes, it seems to open to worldwide now! I have some extra regions like Taiwan, Korea, Mexico now showing revenue.

PS: my AdMob payment is multiple times of my iAd payment, so this is probably dependent on the applications and platforms. But considered that it has always been US/UK only the result isn't bad, and I do expect better result to match AdMob coming along.

Better quality is an understatement. It is WAY better.

Besides, I do kids applications with ads support. When I used AdMob, even turning off adult ads and all sort of ads categories to prevent adult ads, I got curse mails on daily basis that say how evil I am in showing adult ads in my apps! The only way to avoid any sort of sensitive ads is to turn it off completely!

For iAd, I trust Apple's quality control - I have never receive a single complain on my apps.

To be honest, you always have the option to pay for apps. US$0.99 or ads, your choice.

You don't "buy" things with ads on it.

it's about time...

Are iAds going to change depending on the country the app is downloaded?

Will people in the UK see adverts for the new Dodge pickup for $60,000

And people in the US see adverts for some Marmite from Asda?

Glad to see Global Impressions

I'm glad the global impressions are starting to roll in. Only ones I've seen so far are US, UK, and Korea... I'm sure more are coming.

I actually enjoy the quality of the iAds and have found a few apps very useful, also its not a bad thing to support the developers! ;)

Just and FYI.... Wednesday and Thursday we began to see filled impressions from all over the world in about 50 different countries. That is no longer the case, all international impressions have again stopped being filled.

We think it was either a testing move, they forgot to disable international impressions before releasing the 4.2 GM seed, they decided on the fly to disable until official release of 4.2.

We still believe international ads will be live in IOS 4.2 when it is officially released.
