Better 'snooze' ability

One feature that iCal is missing is the ability to repeat an alarm after a custom amount of time. Right now, the only options are 1 and 5 minutes, 1 and 2 hours, and 1 day. If I want the alarm to repeat in 15 minutes, I have to reset it three times for five minutes at a time. If I have 45 minutes, I'm better off just creating a new alarm.

BTW: If there's some workaround that I'm not privy to for this issue, I'd love to hear about it...

iCal update

I like iCal, I use it everyday. The .mac syncing is what I like the best, both my desktop and laptop use the same calendar. But I would like to be able to print out a Month view for the fridge for my family. You can print it, but you cannot size the font small enough, (unless I missed something basic) to print out a complete appointment. When I used Palm Desktop I could read the Month view better.

For my business all I need is iCal integration with our MS Calender events sent via email, which it does fine. No complaints here.

some of the missing features - feel free to add more!

Care to share what features are lacking and what you'd like to see done? It's easy to complain about something, but much more relevant to offer a reasonable solution. Also, as far as I know there's nothing that you can do with iCal and .Mac that you can't do with iCal and other options. Meaning that your .Mac account should have nothing to do with your decision. Now if there are things iCal does that you rely on that other calendar programs don't do, then perhaps all calendar programs lack what you need, and not just iCal.

in my opinion (some ideas are already mentioned):

1. drag & drop needs to be useful as for:
a. drag a 'to do' item into calendar and transform it to 'apointment' and vice versa

b. drag an e-mail and link it to either of the two

c. drag any file you need to link with a certain appointment or to do
(this is similar to the project centre in ms office)

2. attendees
a. in info tag: why bother to have attendees on the list if you can only edit (in address book) or remove them. why not to be able to see his phone number in order to call him or to send him an sms, and not just e-mail him?

b. in alarm: don't you ever put ex. 'call plumber' in your 'to do', but then you also have to put his phone number in the notes, although you already have him tidily in your address book (synchronized with your mobile, of course)?! why not simply to have an option to show his bl**dy phone on the screen?

3. time zone support
a. i agree with the need of 'flying time-zones' (you fly out from athens at 10 am local and arrive in singapore at 6 am new local)

b. for safe time-zone tracking one should have the info of the original time that the appointment has been adjusted from (for safety reasons)

4. birthdays
a. should be automatically updated, no need for a special software (apple wants it simple, right, but the lack of efficient way to solve something that forces you to use other software and waste your time is not simple, it's fautly!)

b. don't you want to know the person's age when it eventually comes out in your appointment?

c. don't you want THIS VERY PERSON to be attached automatically as attendee, so that you can mail him, phone him and whatever you want (see item 2)?

d. how about other 'anniversaries' not only birthday?

5. synchronization
a. multiple-day events are lost in synching with palm, unles you transform them into whole-day repeated event. can it not be solved in the synching program so that you put this as one option to be automatically recognized and transformed into the most appropriate format for the device it is shown at?

b. calendar publishing should be enabled for more calendars at a time.

c. you should have a possibility to publish calendars that can be changed by a group of users, each one on it's end (like hydra with multiple usre word processing)

well, these are only some (minor) thoughts i had as first impression - i may have more if i think about it more thoroughly, but this may be a starting point!

and again, it is not about 'tell me what features are missing so that i know, because for me all's fine the way it is' - if that's the case, then nothing is missing for you! i'm telling what i feel is missing for me, and i hope there are others that share my opinion. none of these things will make the use of ical any more difficult, on the contrary it will surely make many tasks easier, more automated and more fun to use.

You make some good points there mirko.
As far as I'm concerned iCal does *most* of what I want, but I am interested in knowing what others feel is missing. You may well be using iCal in a way I had never even thought of!
It's easy for people to just say "it's crap", but that isn't very useful. You have identified some deficiencies that I can definatly relate to. Automatically repeating aniversaries linked to addressbook would be fantastic. As would a bit tighter addressbook integration in general.

Thanks for your thoughts.

Calendar interface on .Mac

My problem is probably more related to .Mac than iCal.
I'd like to have the ability to edit my calendar directly in .Mac and sync with my Mac like Address book and Bookmarks could. The publishing service is nice, but I can only view it. At work, I only have access to Windows, so there is no way for me to update my calendar.

The other wish items are related to the "To-Do":
1. Ability to set repetitive to-do items.
2. Option to show the start/due date on calendar
3. Ability to link to files or other event/to-do items

For me it's quite funny that when an update comes out lots of people will be asking if it messes up something. This is because I've never had any problems with any updates. Then again, I've never had any FW drives (other than my iPod) connected on my computer. Those seem to be the most usual problem.

I don't know if this is exactly iCal doing something wrong, but usually when I have an alarm for an appointment I get problems with my iPod. It alarms me like weeks before the event even if I have the alarm one or two days before the event. That's something I'd like to be fixed as now I can't really use those alarms very reliably. :p

Luckily everything works fine on my computer. It's just the iPod messing up with me.

I probably don't get the most out of iCal at all and I use it just for home use but I still think it's a nice and simple program to use. This update didn't change much for me but if it makes it more secure than that is surely a good thing. Let's appreciate that it's nice to actually have a nice straightforward PIM program included with the OS.

quick question

Did iCal always have the ability to "detach" the info window? I never noticed this before 1.5.4. Just curious if any one still using 1.5.2 can confirm this for me, thanks.

That functionality was added for 1.5.2 as a 'complaint release' due to people moaning about the addition of the info panel in 1.5.1. This gave an option for people with small screens (1024x768) where the attached info drawer takes up too much space. There is nothing noticeably different about this version.

I'm curious to see what a new features the next major iCal update will include. I don't use it now but have been seriously thinking about it to post my business scheduled appointments for my employees to view easily on the web. The problem is that I use a Palm and the last time I tried iSync it just seemed so slow and it really didn't sync everything and disabled the normal palm sync. (As I recall and if I didn't mess something up). I also use Entourage because it was way more advanced than Mail version 1. So my contacts and the like are scattered all over the place. Please Tiger make this all come together.

swissman,

Tiger isn't going to make Entourage integrate with iCal, addressbook, etc.

I greatly prefer Mail over Entourage. I also have to use Outlook (and even worse, Outlook Web Access) at work. Mail to me is simply the best. Plus it is integrated with Addressbook.

There are some scripts you could use to sync Entourage and Addressbook if you search macupdate or versiontracker.

I made the decision a long time ago to go use AddressBook as my central repository and make a big effort to only use apps that play nicely with that idea. It is an idea that will only get better as OS X matures.

What do you feel is wrong with it and/or missing from it?
Personally I find it more than adequate for my calendering needs and yes I do run a small business.

how about outlook compatibility- i'd like to send an ical invitation to win users, but thats not working. ok, so i try vice versa, same no go.
ok, so i go onto a webpage that features icalendar events export - wont import to ical. well, ok, so I'm at work, on my windows boy, and want to change an appointment using .mac - guess what, not possible.... i could go on and on and on and on - mostly compatibility issues.

It's funny because for me everything Sync just fine (AdressBook/iPood/Palm and even Entourage). It took a bit of tweaking though...

Choose one:
A. ... and now back to whining about developers Tiger.
B. ... and now back to whining about missing industrial duty features in a light duty calendar.
C. ... being upbeat that iCal has been updatered.

C.

Normal Users will just have to wait until Tiger is released.
Need more calendar features? Buy a third party calendar to meet your demands.

iCal is good enough to replace the paper calendar on the wall.
... and iCal has Alarms !!! :)

I wish iCal had the option to multiple calendars to .Mac, but combined them onto one webpage much like I see in iCal, keeping each calendars colors. Also would be nice if Apple would create a .Mac Java applet that would allow people viewing my calendar to make changes, add appointments, etc.

Definitely my #1 pet peeve. I used Outlook for a bunch of years, and in general I have to admit that I like the time input in Outlook better.

Another one of my peeves is that I can't set default actions for a new event (please tell me how). For instance, I am a busy, forgetful person, so I always want an alarm set. Right now I have to do this manually every time instead of having it already in place.

I hate to admit it, but overall the Outlook calendar is better in many respects. It's the only app that I can say that for.

First off, I have spent a considerable amount of time sending feedback to Apple on iCal, so why don't you give me the benefit of the doubt rather than being so self-righteous and condescending.

Can't think of what's missing?

Here are a few basic, elementary things which every other calendaring program on the planet has, right off the top of my head:

1. Recurring Tasks. Like a payroll task every week or every 15th or 30th.
2. Task categories and the ability to sort, filter and group. So, one can separate out phone calls that need to be made when sitting in the airport.
3. Start dates for tasks.
4. Year view. Work week view.
5. Ability to have all-day tasks make the day busy
6. Option to automatically set alarms for appointments
7. View variable # of days, e.g. see the next 3 days
8. Customizable views for appointments and tasks
9. Color code weekends and non-business hours
10. Snooze a customizable amount of time. (And the fact that 15 minutes is missing is just obtuse.) 1 and 5 minutes is more annoying than helpful.

I could add 20 more, but I think you get the point. And yes, as an Apple supporter, I have sent this list and many others to Apple to be part of the solution.

Spell checking in the fields that could use it!

I love that most apps under OS X support the built in spell checker. Yes, I am a terrible speller. It is beyond me why Apple does not support it in all of their own apps. Even Safari supports it in the very form I am typing in.

Cheers

iCal 1.5.4 Breaks Hotsync

Just to let you know that after installing this update I could no longer use my Palm Hotsync. It told me that "That file is locked....." and then bombed out of the sync.

I had to reinstall a fresh copy of 10.3.6 without the iCal update to get it to work again.

SO PALM USERS DO NOT UPDATE TO iCal 1.5.4. It breaks Hotsync!
