If I add something to my iCal, it suddenly adds a load of stuff in the event's notes about a hangouts video call:

-::~:~::~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~::~:~::-
Please do not edit this section of the description.

This event has a Google Hangouts video call.
Join: https://plus.google.com/hangouts/_/<snip>
-::~:~::~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~:~::~:~::-

Is this some sort of virus? I have never used Hangouts.

Are these your own events, or invitations that you've received from someone else?
My own - I double click on a date, type an event title, hit enter and then all that Hangouts stuff appears in the description.

If I delete it it just reappears. I've not dared click on the link.
