The masters was in vr on meta quest in 2016. Looked great.

And the premier league and cricket were great too (again on oculus/meta) in vr in 2020

Professional soccer in 3D could get me interested in a headset albeit not in the $$$ Vision Pro. It looks like the skysports service is no longer available though if i am to believe the info at https://www.thesun.co.uk/tech/25602975/sky-closing-down-sports-vr-service/

These short clips from a trillion dollar company show how ridiculous unrealistic it is to expect full length sports events in VR in our lifetime

Are you on your last breaths? how short is within “your lifetime”?

Stereoscopic cameras and devices are becoming more and more widespread and experiences are getting better.

My life expectancy (about 40-50 years into the future, god-willing) tells me sports events such as Fifa World Cup finals, which were first to be filmed in 4K, then 8K, might get the Vision Pro treatment soon enough.

That looks cool. I don't have access to it on AVP that I know of. What I do have access to on YouTube just does not look at all like Apple Immersive video. It isn't just the difference between amateur vs. professional, though that plays big part. There's also a real difference between seeing cool 3D 180º or 360º video and the Apple Immersive quality which makes you feel like you are absolutely there.
I remember more content for the old google cardboard VR headset with phone. So many companies have disappeared. They were selling complete room sized systems in malls back then.

Is the view angle of this video something like 90 degrees or something? Or is it like all other movies except the 3D?

Watching a movie on Vision Pro is like watching a movie with AirPods. Sure, it's immersive, but people love to watch movies and shows in couple or with friends.

I like my AirPods Pro with spatial surround, but when I watch movies with my girlfriend or with friends, we surely won't watch the movie wearing our AirPods while seating next to each other. We will watch it in stereo or even mono and be able to share the experience together and talk to each other.

Since media consumption is often a social thing, I think all this 3D or VR content won't be as popular. Of course, this is just my 2¢.

I mean, I can't imagine a group of people watching a sports game all wearing a VR set and AirPods.

Is it really worth spreading misinformation like this? Weren't 500,000 Vision Pro headsets sold this year?
Lol, no. Apple wanted to sell that many this year, but they couldn't even sell 100K in the first quarter. Sales in the second quarter fell by 75%, so even though production was cut to 400K, it seems likely to me that they have a warehouse full of unsold units. Maybe TJ Maxx will buy all that unsold inventory and sell them for 90% off.

(IDK, Nintendo cannibalized its stock of Wii U when that was a massive flop and rebuilt them into the NES Mini which helped them recoup the cost. Maybe Apple will do something like that and turn all the unsold Vision Pro headsets into Vision Air headsets.)

Next year's Vision Pro Max is one huge helmet that accommodates up to 7 average-size heads, so they can all be immersed in the video. All 7 people will be sitting very close to one another but that's part of the fun.

Of course, everyone would like to have more content from Apple because the 3D video on YouTube that is made for game goggles is dreadful. The stuff Apple has produced has been simply stunning. The Submerged short movie is so powerful it can evoke very strong emotions.

In the meantime, get yourself Spatial Media Toolkit and convert some of your own video. You will be amazed at how much life it brings to your flat, old stuff. The better the quality the initial video, the better your 3D version will be.
i think he was being sarcastic and doesnt own one... there's a few who feel the need to bag everything onhere

I don't see why it would be any different than recording any other standalone video, and would expect something ongoing like sports to actually be pretty feasible once the recording tech is actually set up the first time. It's a much better investment than anything finnicky like AI.

Exactly. This is why it won't ever become mainstream. At best, it'll be a stepping stone to something like Jarvis in Iron Man. People need to be able to interact with things without isolating themselves or needing gear to wear.

There's no incentive for developers to make anything for this. They really messed up by not also making this a gaming device. They basically put 2D games on a floating window and said use a controller bought from somewhere else. Not having a standardized controller setup that comes with the device already fragmented the market for developers to make something not knowing how many people will have a controller and WHAT controller to play. Not many games are going to be great with just using your hands.

I would say they need to revamp this product, but I don't even know if this is a product category people want. Meta's products are at a good price point, provides decent enough value, and has sold millions, but it's still not close to seeing people who have iPhones or MacBooks. They tried pushing 3D movies and TVs for awhile, and it ultimately didn't go anywhere big.

This product category really needs to be more like Jarvis. People need to be IN the VR/AR, and not simply watching it through a headset.

To be honest, Meta has released some content for Quest headsets that I would argue does more to push the "immersiveness" of the format than Apple's efforts.

Like:
Shot in 360 3D, an hour long, and is quite the spectacle to watch.
I’m not going to risk my privacy and give Meta any more of my personal data just for this 360 spatial hour long content. Too risky even to buy Oculus considering the privacy risk at giving Meta any of the data.

I hate to tell you this, but your data is already compromised a thousand times over if you're an active member of society in any way, unless you're living as a hermit in an off-grid cabin in the woods

One thing that really amazes me about the VisionPro: How much energy some people put into absolutely pointless postings and badmouth a product that they don't even want to own...

I think it's a pretty good indicator that even the MacRumors crowd are unhappy with how Apple uses their resources.

The billions of people-hours that could have gone into fixing bugs or making meaningful changes to the interaction models for existing products with actual users – all wasted into a vanity project because Tim Apple wants to prove to his friends at Wallstreet that there is still growth to be had. Line must go up forever!

actually everything around it amazes me

Imagine how it must feel like when you take you last breath looking back at your live how much useful your contribution to mankind was 🤣

*** Irony off ***

I am typing this wearing my AVP with a 14" MBP and a gorgeous large wide display in front of me - crisp sharp and just not feasible bringing a 7 k wide display with me - even in case a travel 7 k display would exist.

Just watched the new episode and the only word I am thinking of is breathtaking. Apple did it again with total immersion.

My wife is sitting on the sofa reading a Terry Pratchett novel and I am exploring other worlds out of my usual experiences.

I am enjoying my AVP every time I am using it and the virtual display is just one of the many things I really adore. No need to be worried about people missing this experiences - it's a privilege to be alive today and having access to the future now.

I wish everyone a Merry Xmas and a happy new year - enjoying my vacation and having a huge screen with me at almost no effort.

The trickling out of new content little by little really shows the tremendous value of the Vision Pro. :apple:

i'm not buying a Vison Pro anywhere this price point. But I really hope Apple hits it out the park with this kind of content.

Lack of decent content is why VR has never been more than an odd novelty.

Well, this wasn't my favorite Apple Immersive Adventure (the first Adventure with the tightrope still holds that place) but I'm nonetheless extremely happy that AAPL is finally releasing more immersive content. I wish they would start doing so on a regular and predictable basis, e.g. one video a week in predictable rotation of categories.

And, they should start showing the variety of Immersive Videos available and coming soon to ALL users of Apple TV, not just to people when they are using the AVP. Generate a little FOMO, why don't you AAPL???

If AAPL were able to pull off filming an entire game--be it football, basketball, soccer, or (my favorite) hockey--especially if they could stream it *live* in Apple Immersive Video for the AVP, that would be a total game changer. And I'm decidedly NOT a fan of watching any sports. Do that and people would suddenly be clamoring for a less expensive version of the AVP that they could afford to purchase RIGHT NOW. And some diehard sports fans would be shelling out the big bucks to get the current AVP if that first full length video were accompanied by a firm plan for release of further live sporting events on a frequent basis. The technology is there. Now they need to pull off licensing.

Problem is, that the VisionPro is not just meant to be expensive goggles for watching movies. So only waiting for "decent content" might be not the correct approach.
