How 'bout spitting up multiple windows for one conversation, messages not going through, and file transfers choking up?

explain "spitting up multiple windows for one conversation" i don't think i understand

messages have worked for me since i upgraded to 10.2.2

and file transfers just won't work for me since my network is all weird and the firewall on it won't let anyone do file transfers through any instant messaging program...kinda odd

One thing which is very cool about iChat is that using iChat to iChat file sharing i've sent through 2 firewalls/routers, something which never worked with AIM for me.

I don't think groups are really useful, but i think apple will do it anyway. Yes i have a lot of ppl online at once (15 right now) and i only get annoyed when it rusn off screen, but my friend has about 25 on at once and he uses list mode. You can't expect it to do both really.

My wish list is pretty simple: away messages which people get, profile support, searchable logs, and GIF (motion) buddy icons. That and the few major bugs (too many pop-up windows, dead file transfers, 2 of my friends lost thier prefs when iChat wouldnt work and i had to tell them to kill their ichat.plists).

I'll be chatting with someone and a second window will come up with their comment in it. I'll reply in my current window, but it will show up in the second. I'll close one of the windows, send a comment out, but it doesn't show up anywhere. I have to shut all windows to straighten it out.

This has only hapenned a few times (10.2.2 as well), but it is bizarre...

15 people online at once is a lot to you?? i don't think i've ever had that few online... i have over 150 people on my buddy list and i regularly have 60+ people online at once, so groups would defintely be very useful to me!

ICQ and video! WEEE!

I dont know you guys but I would be VERY happy if I could get rid of my ICQ program on Mac os x. It would be soooo sweet to use Ichat for all my chatting needs (ICQ and AIM/MAC). I used to have MSN but most people who have MSN also have ICQ (at least the people I know) so when I trashed MSN I did not miss it a bit! I also look forward to the video interoperability! I will rush and buy myself a sweet web cam! Way to go Apple! :)

p.s. I do agree with the bugs complaint...some bug fixes would be really nice! :)

Sorry to add a slightly less optimistic tone to the discussion, but I don't think that there will be ICQ integration for quite some time...I imagine it will be quite a hassle to integrate it; iChat is essentially an AIM client, right? Meaning that it uses AIM's servers (and software).

I imagine that Apple has a special agreement/access to AIM, and though AOL Time Warner owns ICQ, I think they're probably still separate services...sound reasonable? I think iChat + ICQ will happen when AOL merges ICQ with AIM, if they do that...

As for MSN messenger and other clients, that sounds even less likely to me...I don't think the services are "open" and I bet Microsoft wouldn't want Apple to reverse-engineer MSN...

umm... the latest beta version of the official AIM client from AOL already offers ICQ integration.. so there is no hassle for Apple to include it as well

i was talking about the PC version of AIM that is...

There is always Fire for Mac OS X:

MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, and AIM instant messanging. Still doesn't support offline or chatroom messanging, but it works quite well.

I use iChat daily nowdays, but here are some things I'd like:

3) The ability to know that an IM has been sent if you're working on a document that's taking up a full screen. Currently, if you receive an IM (not the initial IM, but the IMs after the first one), iChat will bounce the dock once, but it will not keep reminding you that you have an unanswered IM. The Windows AIM flashes the taskbar icon, and Adium will bounce your dock icon several times until you read the message. This is one thing I find annoying about iChat.

This should be customizable...I hate when I get an IM and it keeps bouncing and bouncing and bouncing. That's what annoys me, so it should be customizable.

I'm pretty sure I'm in chat room right now in Fire...and I've sent offline messages too. It just depends on the service. You also forgot to mention that it supports IRC and Jabber. Best of all, it now supports AIM file transfer...two ways, and soon with proxied two way.

I understand there may be legal issues preventing apple from implementing MSN. So, what I want them to do is implement a plug-in architecture, so third parties can write their own...

--nw

I think a plug-in architecture would be great as long as the plugins are of high quality. If other services such as MSN or Yahoo are added by third parties via plugins I want it to be up to par with Apples Implementation of AOL IM. I would want full address book support over all else. That's my favorite part. One of my friends currently has 3 AOL IM screennames and I have them all listed in address book. When he logs on...regarless of which screenname he uses...on iChat...it simply says his name (his REAL name...not screenname)...I love that.

The benefit to iChat is it is a full client of AOL's IM network, and the only third party messenger (barring netscrape, which is part of their empire) that has complete access to features like file sharing, direct connect, etc.

I agree that it is not a perfect program, but it is not as buggy as AIM has proved for me (although I have been too lazy to upgrade) and rendezvous is cool, as well as the tight integration with the Address book.

So I kinda dig the little guy.

I don't know if anyone knew about this AIM ad remover, but if you use it, the official OS X AIM client I think is pretty much hands-down the best of them. New versions are being released steadily, and the current client supports encrypted logging, different preference sets, and of course, file transfer and viewing away messages and idle time etc. It also works with Silk now. Apparently the ad remover is against the AIM EULA, but considering that those ads are completely worthless in every way, you're doing AOL a favor by not wasting their bandwidth.

People do realize that Fire.app can read AIM away messages, do file transfers both ways, and encrypt stuff too, right?

Whoa... I didn't realize they added Oscar support. I'll have to try it out and see if what I said still holds. :)

Historically speaking, Fire already has had OSCAR support. Those of you who used Fire way back during OSX's public beta will recall this.

Eric switched to TOC after AOL's blocking attempts went by. Graham, who also works with GAIM, helped get OSCAR in, and he along with the GAIM folks have now got OSCAR emulated to the point that for AOL to block Fire or GAIM, they'd also end up blocking a lot of other official clients as well.

Steaming Audio

What I am looking for is to be able to stream audio to your buddies. This would be awsome, to be able to say "hey, check out this song", and click stream. Also the ability to do this in group chat sessions would be great. This would get away from some of the copyright problems, and just be a nice feature, imagine chatting with a cool song in the background. I dig.

On a side note, someone menitoned not likeing the "available" messages, but I really enjoy these. I have been able to have an entire conversation with people through those "available" messages. Its pretty fun in my mind.

I use ICQ but once iChat gets the support I'll use it. Proteus is cool but has some issues.

I hope iChat NEVER gets MSN support. Why support the enemy? Why allow MSN to grow? Why would AOL allow it's client iChat to support it's competitor?

Nope, never, no way, no MSN support. Ever.

it might be reasonable if you were specific on what didn't work...

...granted the away messages don't always work right...but everything else about it seems to work just fine

Well, hate how iChat shows people who are away as idle once they are away for 10 minutes or so. It doesn't happen when I'm talking to other iChat users but it does when chatting with users of AOL IM for Mac and PC. Also, I want support for animated buddy icons!!

On a side note...I wish address book allowed for cropping/adjustment of the pictures you add to the photo spot...ala iChat (i mean...why doesn't it???)

Fire is nice...but I LOVE the seemless integration of iChat with address book. I also really enjoy how the program looks...it just feels nicer to use. When I first saw iChat I thought I'd HATE the thought bubbles approach...but I actually really like them and can't stand using the regular AOL IM client. I also like how you can reformat how incoming messages look to fit how you want it.

If iChat even gets ICQ I am 99.9% sure I wont be using it for that. I am sure they are too lazy to add all ICQ features to it.
