I personally think they need to work out the notification system first. Otherwise, people are going to have stacks of bubbles every five minutes. The only thing people would end up doing is pressing, close close close close close close.

This will be another *key* selling point for the 2011 version.

*iChat
*New notification system

I think its quite obvious those two will be in the next generation iPhone.

I would hope so, but people said that about iPhone 4 way back when, too. I would just like to see facetime work iPhone-to-Mac.. it'd be grat to video call my friend's Mac from my phone!

remember when steve said facetime devices back in the keynote, maybe they will announce something in september that will add front cameras to ipod touch and at later event ipad, then in september there will need to be an app to tie all these together which is where ichat comes into play. think about this, right now there is no need for an app bc ft can start through phone numbers but if it comes to the touch it will probably use email or udid. quote me if im wrong but wasnt there some line of code in ios4 that had ichat it in way back in the betas.

Seems more likely that iChat will become facetime compatible rather than the other way round especially given all the money Apple have spent advertising FT. Let's see how Apple handles selecting contacts on the ipod Touch/iPad versions of facetime without a phone number. The rumours I heard implied email addresses...

I would guess iTunes accounts.

All good points. I think iChat will probably just become facetime-compatible, and then FaceTime will work through email addresses on iPod Touch/iPad2

If Apple released it then it would be the 'Industry' standard and everyone would jump on board unlike apps like WhatsApp Messenger and Ping! Etc.

This is exactly right. I used Ping! and loved it. The problem is, no one else wants to use it because it's not "big." If Apple released iChat for iPhone, I bet it would blow up and be like BBM.

I agree. So many people get crackberries over iPhone just for BBM.

So explain to me how this is any damn different than text messaging someone???? Really? I had a BB and to be honest thought the whole BB messenger thing was stupid . It is absolutely redundant .

That is what I'm trying to figure out. I'm not trying to be rude but what's the difference between a text message and an iPhone chat app besides the fact it would go against data and not text messages? And couldn't everyone just use AIM for this? Almost every phone is capable somehow of AIM. The last three "dumb phones" I've had even had AIM already on it when I bought it.

My guess is that when the AT&T agreement was made, Apple agreed not to create a chat client for the iPhone.

I bet AT&T is blocking it. Really, think about it. If the Messages app merged with iChat, everyone's iPhone would be able to text for free. They already can with third-party apps, but I bet AT&T is uneasy about it being a standard implementation because the need for an unlimited texting plan would go much lower...
That's just my theory.

AT&T isn't blocking it. Why would they? There are tons of messenger apps that let you use AIM - for free. Why would Apple making one hurt AT&T anymore? Not to mention all of the apps that let you send TEXTS using data only. There's not an iChat for iOS purely because Apple hasn't made one yet. It has nothing to do with AT&T.

iChat is one of those things Apple is intentionally holding back to add onto future updates, maybe before iOS 6.0 we will see it. Video chatting would most likely be linked from Facetime.

I think it's a great idea to have a BBM-esque chatting service made by Apple for the iPhone.
Hopefully it would come in future updates :)

Whatsapp messenger.

The best iPhone - iPhone messenger.

Can also message BB's if they have it installed too. Looks and works a million times better than BBM or any other IM app.

My most used app :)

I have AIM, Skype and eBuddy on my phone to cover iChat, MSN, Google and Skype chatting. It would be nice to see an official iphone ichat app but I can live without it.

I would definitely like to see Facetime implemented in iChat proper as it is a total no brainer. With it I'll use Facetime daily. Without it I'll never use facetime. I've been waiting for this since the first rumours for the first iphone starting rustling.

Apple has iChat but why the hell have they not rolled this out in ios4?

I agree with the spirit of this. It's crazy that you can not make a video call from a Mac from an iPhone.

But in the grand gleaming palace of Apple software, iChat is a decaying smelly outhouse round the back. It's old, crufty and unloved. It's based on AIM which has no traction in the rest of the world. And while Skype will punch a fist-sized hole through any firewall, iChat is blocked by a damp piece of tissue paper.

Apple needs an all-new standards-based Facetime app for the Mac.

No "read" notification means it's not equivalent to bbm. I like whatsapp too but without the "read" notification it's not on the same playing level.
