Yes of course I am stating my own opinion, as are you, as would be anyone here about services which are not fully available yet. We all have different needs. However, what I do not get as I keep saying is why add this PhotoStream and make it SOUND like a better replacement for Galleries, when it isn't even close to Gallery?

And since you do not use MM, just FYI, I do not need to connect my iPhone to share my photos at all, I can do so today over WiFi or 3G from my iPhone to my Gallery which then will sync back to my Mac today and I was happy and am happy to pay for that service.

But as you correctly stated the above is just one mans opinion, it is not better or worse than yours is or anyone elses, right?

Your opinion is biased as you have used MobileMe and basing your comparison on that. MobileMe is a paid-for service. This is not. That is my only issue with your opinion.

Your photo syncing on MobileMe is part of a paid for service. iCloud does it for free sans an online public gallery. With Facebook and flicker and whatnot, alot of people don't need another online gallery, so this is a bonus. Therein lies a value. It's doing something you paid for, but for free.

IF iCloud was a paid-for service, I'd fully agree with your complaint. But it's not. iCloud is of great value to people that do not use MobileMe as its something we're getting for free that used to be charged for.

You seem to be stuck on Photo Stream as a replacement for Mobile Me Galleries. It is not. They are completely unrelated solutions. Mobile Me Galleries were simply canceled. They were not replaced by Photo Stream. Photo Stream was not made to "SOUND like a better replacement for Galleries." Apple never said anything of the sort.

If you want to replace galleries, the most popular solution would be Flickr. Pro account for unlimited storage is only $25 per year.

Exactly. 🙂

I'm confused about photo backup. How could a service store ALL of your, say, MS WORD and EXCEL files (assuming MS will support iCloud), but NOT your iPhoto library. If it doesn't sync my entire iPhoto library, the service is worthless. Additionally, who has 50 GB of Word files? It's got to have the 50 GB option because of media files, and songs don't count.

The freebie amount is 5Gb but you can purchase more. You don't have to go for the 50Gb option, you can be selective with what app backs up. Since MS don't even have an Office app for iOS then you won't be backing up those.

It's in it's infancy, things will change, more features will be added over time. Be patient.

But as it stands, there's no long term icloud photo backup yet. Photostream is exactly what the name suggests, a stream of photos. The last 1000 or 30 days. It will copy them to your PC so it's almost a local backup if you will. It was never pushed as a long term permanent backup service.

I have tried to find this answer. Nobody knows why anyone would need even 20 g of this plan, unless you do some serious pages and numbers docs. 🙄

Give back Gallery and iDisk or fail on iCloud.

The reason why they offer this space is due to iPhone/iPad backups. Some backups can be 20Gb per device depending on the app. My spotify backup was 5Gb, my VLC was 8Gb. So can be done easily. It's not just for pages documents.

Plus how does no gallery or iDisk mean iCloud is a fail? MobileMe was a paid service. iCloud is not. They're not really comparable due to that. iCloud is a lot of service when we're getting it for free.

Could it be better? Yes. But since its free and it has a ton of useful functionality then I'm pleased.

The thing is, this service seems to be made for iPhoto. Given iPhoto's complex folder and file structure, storing my iPhoto library on the cloud with Dropbox is scary to me. Is there an effective cloud-based backup for iPhoto? If not, it makes zero sense to me that Apple wouldn't let me use some of my 50GB for my iPhoto library. Additionally, without some sort of cloud-based backup for my iPhoto library, iPhoto itself becomes much less desirable to use.

Well.

5gb for free, who cares? I have paid for iDisk and get 20 gb now with gallery.

This just forces me to leave it all together and find other insecure services. Flicker, no thanks- Dropbox not secure.

Point being this is a downgrade. They instituted wireless backups for a reason, forcing you to use it and fill it with your freebie 5 gb is all you will do I suppose.

to me this service is not designed for iPhoto, it's designed for iOS, the only way iPhoto comes into it is that photostream will sync the photos in the stream to iPhoto and you can manually add photos to the stream from iPhoto. That's about it. It's not a long term backup thing. iCloud is iOS backup only, not Mac (Yet).

you're looking at this the wrong way really. It's not a downgrade as such. The service you have been using has come to an end, iCloud is a new service, which has some similar features and some new ones. That's the way Apple want to look at it, thus why they changed the name from MobileMe to iCloud.

It may be that on official release or at some later date, they might bring in the features you want. Have to wait and see.

Don't forget that MobileMe users are a minority compared to iOS users, which is where Apple seems to be focussed, so iCloud to the majority is a winwin thing, it's free and many features that they (and i) will use.

Seriously, you sure about that? There are Mac (and PC) betas for it.

Correct, apart from adding to photo stream you can't do any sort of backup from mac or pc. iCloud for mac and beta simply syncs calendars, contacts etc, sets up mail and sorts out photo stream.

Naw,
It's a loose loose.

They took away the meat, and left the crumbs.
No syncing bookmarks.
No syncing syst. prefs.
no more iDisk, and if you used it ever you would understand the loss.
Basically it's really not worth anything, so it should be free.
Oh, and where should I put my 7GB gallery now that I have been sharing with my family around the world for 3 years?

it syncs bookmarks. it's a new service and it's free. again, you miss the point that it's made for the majority of iOS users, who do not have mobile me, mobileme users are in the minority here.

as for your gallery, you'll have to find somewhere else, there's many places to upload to if you look and try

for me and many others, it's win win, we get some great features for free.

two copies of photo's?

Ok, I'm curious about something. If you take a picture on your iPhone and it is stored in your camera roll folder. Then your camera roll is added to the photo stream, synced to all devices, and put into a "photo stream" folder. Wont you end up storing the same picture twice on your phone? I mean, wont you have a copy of the same photo in both folders taking up twice the space. If not, is the picture deleted from your camera roll after its added to the photo stream? Just wondering if anyone out there knows how that works.

It stores it twice, as soon as you take a photo it's in both places.

So it seems that iCloud is not what I thought.

You can't view your iphoto library over the internet on your iPad. Like mobileme galleries.

I used to use Simplify Media for music and photos and was hoping it would be something similar.

That really sucks.

Does anyone know of something that works like Simplify media did? To view your iphoto or listen to your itunes on your iphone or ipad?

Ok here's my 2 cents.....iCloud is a bunch of ****!! For two damn years I drank apples bs tea and used mobile me to host the thousands of pics I post online. Now...they basically tell me to eat a dick, so sad too bad. I am sorry but this iCloud crap is exactly that.....CRAP!!! Not to mention my business website which I host on there they they basically have screwed me out of. I seriously think that if Photobucket just said out of the blue..."screw you we quit" there would be a ton of outrage. This would be different if it was a free service but it's not. WE PAY FOR IT!

So how long is it going to be before they realize this was a waste of their time and pull the plug on iCloud? Personally for me I will never trust another word they say. It is not the point that yeah I can re host very damn thing including my business website and store...it's the fact that I already did this once and really shouldn't have to do it again.

Wow. OTT much? Take a chill pill. It's not the end of the world!! Yes they pulled the plug on MobileMe, that's a different kettle of fish. You've got a year to find a replacement for the services, there are good alternatives around. Obviously MobileMe was not generating enough income for the usage. Companies end services all the time.

Also iCloud is pretty good for a free service. You're just hating on it cos you're comparing it to MobileMe. You can't compare them for the simple fact that MobileMe is a paid for service and iCloud is a free service.

Ok....so how's a "FREE" service going to generate income?

iCloud offers me NOTHING....got it ? ZIP ZILCH NADA NOTHING....it's a complete joke...You can't do didly squat with your pictures so what the point of having them there other than to provide back up online? You can't remote host them and post them any where. Really does iCloud even have a purpose other than free back up for a bunch of iPhone and iPad users? NO. The only reason this was done was to pull more people away from having to have a second computer and sell iPads and iPhones. i.e. take customers away from PC manufacturers.

It is just one more move by Apple to alienate more real laptop/desktop computer users. Because in reality most PC/ Apple desktop and laptop users have back up available through time machine or other home storage solutions.

Oh wait I forgot....it's there so people don't have to grab their tiny little cable and synch their phone....Really?? How dumb is this. I never thought plugging my phone in was that big of a task😕 Next thing you know they will offer iPhone and iPad charging using mind control...God forbid we have to "plug" it in to anything anymore.

Ok....so how's a "FREE" service going to generate income?

if you'd read up about it, iCloud is funded by the existing profits from iOS devices, so there is no charge to anyone, no adverts, nothing. there's nothing stopping people without an iOS device signing up for a free account at all. if you claim it's not free, where exactly am i paying?

It may not offer you nothing, but only a small minority of iOS users actually had MobileMe. so the majority are getting a bunch of extra free features for their device. alot of people use other services for photo hosting, such as Flickr anyway, infact way more people use Flickr than MobileMe. for iCloud users, it's great that any recent photo we take is backed up to our computers and available on our iOS devices. iCloud has many features, yes they are mostly iOS related, but that's the point since it's already factored into the profit of iOS devices. Yes Apple are a business, so they will do things inspired by business.

It is just one more move by Apple to alienate more real laptop/desktop computer users. Because in reality most PC/ Apple desktop and laptop users have back up available through time machine or other home storage solutions.

actually i think you'll find that most average users still don't actually backup their systems, i do alot of first line support for Joe Public and a vast majority don't backup their laptop/desktops. Plus i think you're EXTREMELY over doing it in regards to this point, as you really don't make any sense.

Oh wait I forgot....it's there so people don't have to grab their tiny little cable and synch their phone....Really?? How dumb is this. Actually the wireless syncing to a computer is nothing to do with iCloud, you're mixing up wireless syncing and iCloud backups. totally different entities, you should look up each and see the difference.

like i said, you need to go have a time out, chill, cry it out, whatever. Apple are a business, MobileMe obviously was not successful enough, so they scrapped it for something that may be more widely used. Deal with it and move on, there's suitable enough alternatives to the services that MobileMe supplied, there was before MobileMe and there is now.

Good I am sooooo happy you like iCloud... When's the wedding?

Mark my words...Apple's agenda is quite clear here. It seems you fail to realize that and enjoy them making your choices for you.

And seriously.....do you enjoy telling people to calm down ?...If I feel that something pisses me off I will get as damn worked up about it as I feel I need to. Last thing I need is you telling me how to react to something that downright grinds my gears.

Good day mate😛
