Depends on the app. Many of course will still work. But an example of some that may not are ones that had to log onto a server and they changed the login process to be more secure and require an updated version of their app to conform.
By the way, I would not be surprised at all if the reason Apple doesn't support backup for older OS versions is related to new security methods.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure surfing on my gen 3 iPod Touch hasn't worked in years, but Cut the Rope still worked last time I tried it...which has been a while, so that could have changed, I guess.. nope, it seems to still work with a complaint about not connecting to the game server, which makes sense I guess, as I keep it in airplane mode.

I tend to keep old computers around just to use old software or older versions, as I find far too often lately that I prefer the older versions without the "improvements". And I don't want to lose my calendar settings to remind me to yell at the kids to get off my lawn! :)

I keep my reminders to yell at the kids on the street and my morning message congratulating me for waking up yet again on the cloud. I'm an angry old man but I still keep up with new tech ;)

Well, I am running iOS 18 on my current iPhone, I'm just grumbling about the changes! But it is a 13 mini, so I'm still hanging on to the past.

No one is forcing you to upgrade, friend. Just back up your iPhone/iPad to a computer.
oh, we're forced to upgrade. I recently got a new iPhone because the new ones had some cool new features -- forced. Just like how today my wife forced me to eat a cookie by baking some and letting the smell waft over to me forcing me to get up and get one.

If you're paying for iCloud, Apple should offer you a new iPhone/iPad for free, like cell phone companies do when your old one is no longer compatible.
Well, I guess if cell phone companies are letting you upgrade your phone for free then that fixes the whole problem of owning a phone that's too old for iCloud backups.

I understand that these are older devices. But… if you are paying for iCloud storage to store your backups, Apple going into your paid storage to delete said backups seems a bit much. I’m guessing there is language in the agreement that specifically allows Apple to do this… maybe… not sure… like anybody has time to read a billion pages of legalese, lol.

(Insert South Park “Why won’t it read?” meme reference here.)

Don't think many will still be using devices running iOS 8. So should not be much of an issue. Also it is not like every year one generation of iOS is losing access to cloud access. This is more like a one time situation.

Unless there’s a compatibility issue this is pretty anticonsumer. Whether you think old devices are OK or not is irrelevant, purposefully blocking things to make money is bad.
Deleting data from a paying customers account is criminal and I would expect a lawsuit. Apple should have ZERO access to my storage account and this raises huge trust issues.

Curious, anyone here still use an iPhone 4?

Yes, it can still be usd for phoning, texting , taking pics, mail, etc. Also becaus it has the old 30 pin connector it works with old speaker docks.
Th iPhone 4 is truly a beautiful device, even the screen looks amazing.
By the way, I don't use iCloud on it.

In other words, iPhones 4 and earlier, as well as the original iPad, cannot be backed up to iCloud.
So a pkone that has not been on sale (new) for 13 years if people still use that as their daily driver they may have larger issues than the lack of lack of future backups, like when was the last battery changge and whow many minutes they get between battery charges with moderate use

The Cloud is someone else's computer. Store everything locally if someone is concerned about having control over their data
true but mega corps have way more resources than an average user so for the time the cload backup is available the user probably gets wey more redundancy than any local sollution they are able to setup and run, we aer talking about the average grandma here not the avarage it homlaber., but tyea the disappearing service is an issue if that is your only backup

If the device and apps work and do what one needs, then by all means keep using them.

BUT USE THEM OFFLINE!!

In no shape or way should anything this outdated be connected to any network.
if tyhe network is are gaped from the internet and a separate vlan there is no issue, granted this is not a normal setup, and if you have the resources to run that kind of setup you can certainly afford to buy a new apple device or two once in a while

my guess would be that the backen that serves the api that the client (in this case ios) uses to get the data from/to the client/servers is being reconfigured (for valid security reasons) to omit older and proven insecure versions of ssl/tls, which is usually a good thing, but not when a client that does not support it (ios9) does not support the newer versions still available. I think we can disccount pure greed here, altho greed is certainly a component in the decision

The very reason I do NOT trust Apple with my backups or backing up in iCloud. Apple should never delete anything I am paying for. If the protocols change, then Apple should provide a generic download that I can use to move my data off iCloud. Not just delete it. Again Apple believes that the data you store in iCloud is Apple's not yours.

Then let people install their own software. SSL/TLS still compiles for 32 bit devices. Owning the device should mean that I can continue to support older devices if I choose to.

This is just pure greed.
