Good question. I don't know, but I like having my files both on the computer and the cloud, like Dropbox.

The thing I like about DropBox and One Drive is that I have my files stored locally, if I lose internet access, or the cloud servers are down for some reason I still have my data.

Yep. Plus having them stored locally allows me to keep them backed up with Time Machine too.

Can anyone confirm if iCloud Drive is faster than iDisk? Because I think people died of old age waiting for iDisk to upload a file...

I guess this is the million dollar question

iDisk was bad

One Drive is ok but nowhere near as fast as dropbox (due to my location my internet speed is poor, dropbox still works good but OneDrive is noticeably slower but just bearable)

Would be nice to be able to store locally not just on the Mac but also the iPad / iPhone for select documents etc for times with no internet

Does iOS 8 and iCloud Drive offer anything different compared to having Dropbox or Google Drive on your iPhone?

I know one of the complaints with iOS compared to android was not having access to store files locally in central location that was accessible to all applications. The Apps and files were Sandboxed. But I thought Dropbox and Google Drive technically solved this issue... Or am I missing something?

For now I'll stick with Google Drive because I got 130GB of storage for free.

If I ever obtained near that amount on iCloud Drive, I might make the switch.

Does the iCloud drive store documents on your local drive like Dropbox or is it cloud only?

Good question. I don't know, but I like having my files both on the computer and the cloud, like Dropbox.

I suspect it is stored locally, unless they changed the way it works from Mavericks. If you go to the below folder in Mavs you can see all your iCloud documents even when offline. Interestingly, when in the folder the path bar in Finder changes to iCloud. You can actually drag an alias of this folder to the desktop and use it like Dropbox now under Mavs. It looks like they just put the iCloud folder more upfront and prettied up the folders and organization in Yosemite.

Code:
~/Library/Mobile Documents

Unless they bump up the free space above the current 5GB, this won't be of much use for me... at least not without paying for more space. Like others mentioned, most of my 5GB is already taken up by iOS device backups and Mail.

Fascinating. Thanks for that. It would seem then there there is a possibility of the locally stored files then.

Apologies but how can i get access to my icloud drive on Yosemite?

I want to sign up for the 200gb plan but cant find a link anywhere

Sorry for the cross post (also posted this in another thread) but I think iCloud Drive is a Really Big Farking Deal. People have been crying about the lack of file system on iOS since, well, iOS 1. We finally seem to have one. I've been using iWork, Dropbox, and dropdav (to allow easy round tripping) and I am very excited to switch to iCloud Drive assuming it works well.

And if you look at the screen shots of it on Apple's site it looks like there are folders tied to specific apps, e.g. Numbers, as well as standard user created folders, like Household Finance. This bodes well, though I wonder if you could have a document mirrored in two places, like a spreadsheet from Numbers that also resides in the Household Finance folder. My guess is yes.

Also, I'd bet $ that iCloud Drive will be accessible from within Mail such that we will be able to attach files from Mail, and more than one at that.

Finally, my guess is that there will be a user configurable amount of storage to keep locally on iOS, like the last 1GB or 3GB or whatever worth of documents opened. And maybe you can flag specific folders or documents to always keep locally as well.

I think when all is said and done this will turn out to be one of the very biggest things announced at WWDC.

Totally agree and really do hope you can store / configure local space on iOS!!!

My only fear is that third party apps dont embrace it, especially MS Office on iOS which is valuable to tons of people. They are pushing the One Drive thing so hard that I fear they will not allow iCloud Drive integration somehow

Oh the irony! Apple as the open, plays nice with others company, and Microsoft as the closed, proprietary, walled garden guys. Funny.

Ha - never thought about it that way but yeah your right lol

The One Drive seems to be marketed just as equal as the office apps itself since it subscription based therefore my negative feeling they will force Apple users to use it on the iPad etc

I just realized too that in addition to iWork app folders within iCloud Drive they show folders for other apps took including Goodreader. Wow.

Maybe Apple will put a hook for One Drive in as well. Or I guess that's something MSFT would have to provide for... Does MSFT currently allow any other apps to access one drive?

I could be wrong but dont believe they do

To be honest, I would say it would work locally. Apps like Pages, Keynote, etc work locally right? So it should behave the same way.

Think I'm 99.999% certain it will def work locally on your Macs, iOS though may be different (hope not)

When I open iWork apps on my iPad there is always a noticeable beat while it pings the cloud to sync. However, if there is no connection, it does allow you to open a locally stored copy.

Am I the only one who thinks 5GB is pretty miserly in this day and age? Like someone else mentioned, I'm using almost all of mine just for device backups and mail. Unless this changes, Apple is punishing you for owning more iDevices. The more you have, the more backups you have, the more iCloud space you have to purchase. At the very least they need to change it so device backups don't count against the limit.

Also, their prices aren't that good for additional storage. $100/year for a total of 55GB? Microsoft and Amazon will give you that much for half the price. Not to mention, they introduced a HUGE price increase without anyone noticing. 20GB for $1/month ($120/year) once iCloud Drive is released, when right now it's $40/year for the same amount.

I agree that they should up the free count for every iOS device you own. That seems very reasonable.

Not sure how many months you have per year but $1/month for 12 months is only $12/year and that is very cheap.

will this icloud drive have an app/folder on windows to store data locally like dropbox? if it doesn't, this would be the deal killer for me. otherwise, I would look at getting a subscription and moving items over as I only get about 9 gb free on dropbox anyways.
