iCloud photo library might be turned off by default. However, as soon as I opened the Photos app, it asks me if I want to use the Beta of it. I guess I'll say no for now.

I turned it on for my iPhone and iPad. I figured I can still copy them via Image Capture for backup to my hard drive like I've always done.

I've confirmed that iOS 8 photos for iCloud do indeed continue to go to iPhoto. For now.

Question;

I have about 5000 pictures on iPhoto on my Mac, now that I'm using the 200 gb iCloud Drive plan, I would like to be able to see them all on all my iOS devices. How do I send them to iCloud photo library? Do I drag them all from the library section on iPhoto to the photo stream section? And have them upload? I understand videos will sync too but not on iPhoto until 2015.

ps; is iCloud photo library even available yet? theres supposed to be an option under photos on iOS settings; "Optimize iPhone Storage" which i don't see.

This got messier than I thought it would be.

Are these 2-3 separate products? Essentially what I want to know is, do they each provide a separate 5GB allowance from each other? Or does drive, photo library, and backup all come under one 5GB umbrella?

I couldn't tell from the keynote or any discussion of the cloud.

Lol, I got a headache before I could finish reading the thread title... That's why I turn off all these features. One day, when apple can finally explain these (and their ramifications/odds&ends), and do it very concisely, I might decide to use them. To this day I haven't bothered to delete all the duplicate photos imported by photo stream into my iPhoto library from way-back-when.

Apple contains multitudes: brilliantly simple & incredibly inept.

...yep, I also don't have this feature - apparently (I have asked a similar question on another thread here : https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1786806/) it was dropped from the final iOS8 release to the general public.

From what I have heard, its probably coming back once they get this Yosemite business sorted!

Those on the Yosemite DP and iOS 8 beta were able to keep it through the final release.

I have it, but photos are still a blunder until yosemite comes out.

my iPad mini kept asking for iCloud drive password and I got so annoyed that I turned it off.

The option is still there for me, but like someone else said, until Yosemite is figured out along with iPhoto and ****, you CANNOT enable it yet. You can try, but it says adding users everyday, come back later or something along those lines. This will be the best easiest way to store pics and vids. Now that Icloud storage is at a much better price structure, you'd be stupid to not use it. Once enabled, you can store everything in the cloud and access it anytime from any iOS device. No more having to goto a Mac or a windows computer having to download the iCloud control panel to view them. This will also free up storage on your phone since you won't have to keep your camera roll full not knowing if your stuff is stored safely and thinking if you delete it wether you still have it or not.

I really hope they announce an increase in free storage soon. I know the price for storage is not very high, but compared to what people get on other platforms it's just too little.

Also I think people that do not surf the web or are on forums like this one are just gonna end up confused after a short while when they run out of storage. No more photos synced, no more back-ups... I don't have a lot of stuff on my iPad and iPhone, yet run out of space all the time just because of backups.

Apple really should move the release of photos app for Mac to this year if they plan on enabling it on iOS. Such a mess. I had it enabled before. But can't enable it again after restoring.

want to subscribe to this thread just to understand it.

I am hoping that Photos will offer what I "need" in a library/post-porcessing program (I currently use Aperture)

This was a bit confusing and between WWDC and the Sept iPhone/Watch event they barely touched on lots of things.
