Well then. I guess I can't use Pages/Numbers/Keynote until September. Because, you know, not a developer. Yosemite didn't even give me an option to opt out of iCloud Drive that I can remember. *sigh*

I'll just suck it up and use OneDrive/Microsoft Word.

It did, though.

I did say that I couldn't remember or not. Since it did, it's my own fault and I'll still suck it up. I guess I'm being dramatic. Of course.

i hate apples approach with cloud related stuff. its so backwards ... just give me an app with folders where i can put files of whatever file format and let me PICK the app i want it to open with. i find it so irritating the other way around like what happens if i edit a file with one app? does it also get changed inside another app? what happens if i delete it from one app? does it get deleted everywhere? what if i have a pages file and a numbers file of the same damn project. i cant use the same app obvs so i have to open seperate apps and have no idea where those files r stores cuz they arent at the same "folder" location. what happens if iCloud "breaks"? will i still have access to those files within other apps? does that mean i have multiple files of the same file within each app i opened it with? hella confusing.

I agree. However, with Craig F. running the show at Apple, I bet in time they will revert back to the correct way of accessing files (not iOS' app-based approach). With Apple's App-Based approach, you will never be able to have a bird's eye view of your project. It is an organizational mess.

On my Mac, I found a song I was working on years ago along with its lyrics in a Word file & a PDF of the music sheet. It was all in a single Folder under "Composition 2007-B". There is no way in Hell I would have found all those supporting documents for that song had it been done on an iPad.

Here's how Apple could easily improve this & keep the simplicity: Allow Folders (like the Mac). Also, when you launch an App (say Garageband), it will show all your Garageband files, regardless of which folders they are in.

I think the majority of people would disagree with that, excluding the small groups of geeks. Even I don't really want a file system on ios, it defeats the purpose behind ios and it's design philosophy and judging by sales/costumer satisfaction they are doing something right. A file system is so old fashioned anyways and just not needed for a phone / tablet, even for a mac to some extend. The app centric focus is just the name of the game not just for documents but music, films etc.
iCloud drive in ios 8 sort of provides you with one anyway and I for one really looking forward to it. #

You can't judge by sales for what features people desire (iPhone was selling well without a Retina Display, or without a 4" screen, FaceTime, iMessage or TouchID).

App-Centric has a few major flaws: 1. You have to remember which App created which document (this may be remedied in iOS 8) 2. If you delete an App, you lose your document.

My alternative approach (bolded at the bottom of my earlier post) doesn't change anything for current iOS users. It's both App Centric AND gives you an ability to manage Files. And I'm not talking giving access User Libraries/Audio Drivers/OS files either. As iOS matures, users have demanded more. Think about - who wanted third-party keyboards or Extensions in 2007? Needs evolve.

Fair enough. The app centric approach is done over the cloud so you won't loose stuff if you delete the app. I agree iOS does need to evolve and it is a lot but I still think a file system is not needed. The tech world for the most part has moved past file management and local storage, especially on mobile devices. I used to have the nokie N96 and N97 (symbian) and used to think the file system was awesome, looking back now I think its so old fashioned.
Its just different times with everything being app and cloud centric. Even on my mac I hardly use finder anymore compared to say a few years back.
Having folders and an exposed file system (which you sort of can do with iCloud drive) is for the minority. Im not saying i wouldn't appreciate the feature they way you illustrated tho.

Yeah - I get what you mean. Hopefully Apple will do what they do with OS X: Make it easy for inexperienced users but still appeal to "power-users".

yeah thats the beauty about apple they will implement it in a nice way if they choose to do so, even if it takes time.

What about iCloud drive doesn't satisfy you in regards to iOS 8? Is it the explicit lack of file management and folders in iCloud drive, which you can do on Osx but not iOS.

It's still Dropbox for me until iOS apps come online to manage iCloud drive.

Pretty much the fact that you can do certain things in OS X, not available in iOS. Not a deal-breaker but it would be a nice addition to iOS.

It's there.
Preferences >ICloud > checkbox for iCloud drive. It is unchecked by default.

I did say I checked the iCloud Drive button by mistake. But even unchecking it doesn't restore the original Documents & Data cloud. Am I right or wrong?

It looks like once you choose to go with iCloud Drive, there is no going back. I've even lost access to my old iCloud Pages and Numbers files in IOS 7. No big deal because I have all my files backed up on DropBox. I guess we'll just have to be patient and wait until IOS 8 is fully released to get full functionality of iCloud Drive.

I am disappointed though there will be no iCloud Drive IOS app. Like others I thought there was but after looking at the pictures on the Apple website, it is obvious they are just dialogue boxes.

Once you've upgraded your account to drive, it's upgraded forever.

Yeah. Reading fine print would have been nice. Sometimes I'm a nimrod!

Well, I'm not going to cry over it. I've got Microsoft Word on my iPad plus MBP, and 1 TB worth of OneDrive space. Until the middle of September or so, I'm all set for my senior year of college! :)

Ditto here. I'm not an iOS geek but not a noob either. Watching that iCloud Drive segment from WWDC lead me to believe (incorrectly) that it was going to be a DropBox equivalent. I can't be the only one. And based on what I'm reading on the innerwebs, there are a lot of misrepresentations, opinions and expectations similar to mine.

I simply don't understand this fanboyism for app-centric file management.

When I opted in I didn't realize Pages would no longer sync either, so for the time being I just use it at icloud.com. Works fine for me for now at least and everything syncs as it should between the web, the iPhone, and the iPad.
