Why are people still using one Apple ID to share purchases among family members? THIS IS NOT NECESSARY.

All you have to do is set up Home Sharing in iTunes and you can share among different computers and devices that are using different Apple IDs. This whole thread is largely unnecessary if people actually understood how Home Sharing in iTunes works.

Agreed, but how will this work with iOS5, once iTunes essentially gets taken out of the equation (we'll be syncing to iCloud not iTunes)? Or is it possible to sync and backup to ios5 nut still do home sharing on iTunes, and load up my purchased content on say my wife's device?

iKennett:

With YOUR setup, on your phone with gmail/me.com iCloud: can you send an invite to an iCloud calendar event?
Also how does sharing a calendar with another person (diff icloud ID) work?

Any chance you can take a few screenshots showing this, especially for the first question?

Thank you in advance for your time and your answers on here have been greatly helpful.

Great info here for sure!

I am in a separate state from where I wife is located. She has the IPad, VZ IPhone and a Mini. She uses the Mini to sync up her devices.

I have a MacBook, and no other devices yet. Home sharing is turned on on the MacBook and Mini, so that when I am home and on the same network, we can cross load the songs we have purchased while apart.

We share the same ITunes account.

If I download ITunes v 10.3.1 and purchase music at my location, will it also update her computer and devices as well? She has not downloaded 10.3.1 yet, and the VZ Iphone does not support ICloud anyway.

I would like to download 10.3.1 so I can play with it before this fall.

Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I sent an email to Apple support last night, will post here whatever they reply.
Hope they will say something helpful...

EDIT:

this is another useful page on the topic, so we are definitively not alone here. :)

So, I finally got a reply:

it is not necessary to have the Apple id and mobile me account address same.

Thank you for contacting the iTunes Store. If you have any further inquiries, please do not hesitate to reply to this email. I will be happy to help in any way I can. Have a Great day.

Well, it is nice thing to know. :)
Hope it will turn out great in the end. :)

As a followup, we did both download ITunes 10.3.1 and set up the store as required. And, it worked well. Our computers crossloaded to each other the music we had each purchased, so that was pretty slick considering we are not on the same network.

Hi All,
On the downside I can't use 'Find My iPhone' from my account to find the OH's iPhone. You can add an additional iCloud account but only the main one allows you to use find my iphone.

I don't know if this is a bug or not but I disabled find my iPhone on my master iCloud account, added my main gmail account I share my apps with my partner as a iCloud account and turned everything off but find my iPhone and it worked perfectly despite it saying only the master one allows find my iPhone :D
