Ok, so I'm a bit confused on iCloud logins. To sign up for an iCloud account.....you will have to use either an:

    - existing @me or @mac MobileMe account that will be transitioned to iCloud as a @me login

    or

    - setup a new @me login

Is this correct? I'm assuming you can't use your own email account (@gmail @hotmail etc)....because you get a mail account with it?

What I have right now is:

My Apple ID is my own personal domain address.
My iTunes account is my Apple ID
I have a MobileMe account that I use just for syncing address book, calendar, etc.

I'm assuming that the easiest path is to just keep my MobileMe account....and transition that to iCloud?

I can't sign up for an iCloud account with a personal domain correct?

Yes, I'm a bit confused also about the iCloud/MobileMe login.

I have something very similar...I have a my AppleID using my gmail account. I have my MobileMe for keeping things in sync like contacts, bookmarks, etc.

I can't see a way to convert my AppleID over to my MobileMe.

actually apple make it very simple.

e.g. your current apple ID is xxx@gmail.com

when you got your IOS5, on the setup it will ask for your apple ID instead of iCloud so you won't get confuse.

Thus you enter your current apple ID xxx@gmail.com

This xxx@gmail.com apple ID will become your iCloud ID. If you want email in iCloud, you can create a new email id which is xxx@me.com but note this xxx@me.com is not our apple ID just your email ID only.

So hope it clear everyone doubt.

Ok, but what if we are currently using an xxx@me.com address (not as an Apple ID) just for syncing, etc.

I downloaded and installed iOS 5 on my iPad last night and setup my current AppleID/iTunes account e-mail address (personal domain) as an iCloud account and I can now login to iCloud no problem. Everything works like it would if you were signing in with a @me.com iCloud account, except you can't access e-mail.

Ah ok, so that answers one question. You can have an iCloud account with a personal domain/gmail/etc.....but you won't get email.

I guess one question is.....if I wanted to go that route....but I'm syncing using a me.com address......should I just remove the me.com address from my phones and stop the syncing.....thus making all my contacts/calendars local to each machine/device and setup an iCloud account and start over?

Then you can keep on using it, you'll just need to transition it over to an iCloud account. Went through that last night as well for my old MM account. I believe the address was me.com/move

you cant merge apple ID accounts,

you will want to use the apple ID you use for music and apps for iCloud, if that is a, say, gmail address then you can still get a @me.com email and that is added as a 2nd email for your apple ID.

otherwise you will use the apple id (one for apps and music) for all iCloud features except mail, contacts and calendar, and then use your MM email for email contacts and calendar

same rule apply, just that your xxx@me.com won't be your iCloud ID.

Either/or would work and both will take a little leg work to make sure it is setup right. For some reason when I did my MM>iCloud transition it didn't pull over my contacts right.

I would go into Address Book and iCal and make sure you have backups of both before you get started with any of it. We're still talking a program that is still in beta, so better to be safe than sorry for the time being.

I will give them this though....the whole iCloud suite seems much snappier than MobileMe ever did on it's best day.

I can't use my MobileMe as a AppleID?

I went to that me.com/move but I don't have a Mac Developers License to download 10.7.2 Seed, so I can't move everything over, all I have is the iOS Developers license.

So what would people recommend in my case?

    My Apple ID is xxx@personal.com

I have a xxx@me.com attached to my iPhone,iPad,Macs to sync contacts, addresses, calendars, Find my iPhone.

I DON'T use or need any iCloud email....in fact I don't even use email in MM on my iPhone/iPad....I turned that off.

So before iOS5 and 10.7.2......should I remove/turn off anything MM related on all devices and machines (thus making all calendars, contacts local to each) Then after upgrading each....sign up for iCloud with my xxx@personal.com domain. Get all devices syncing on that email?

Then in the future, if I ever wanted a xxx@me.com email, I just add that to my iCloud account as a second email?

when icloud is released sign into it with you apple id (gmail one) then from your MM account export your contacts and calendar and upload them to the iCloud, then just use your apple ID (gmail one) which is both icloud and apple ID and turn on the features you want to use
    [IMG]
if you turn on 'Mail' in iCloud then you would be asked to create a new me.com email address. there is no way to get your me.com email now into your other apple ID

if you wanted to use your MM email address in the future, you would just add it to the phone as another iCloud account and leave all features (see pic) turned Off except the 'Mail'

Couldn't I just turn off MM on my Phone/Macs before I setup iCloud? Then I would sign up for iCloud with my Apple ID....and it would take my local calendar, contacts, etc and sync them up?

So I use MM for email, contacts, calendars, syncing.

    I use @gmail.com for itunes account/purchases.

Essentially I have to choose what I am going to use from this point forward is what I am seeing?

I guess I can't simply transition my MM over to iCloud and keep everything syncing like i currently do and then continue to use my appleID @gmail.com for my purchases in itunes because then those purchases aren't tied to iCloud and i miss out on that part of what iCloud can do for me.

what a pain in the butt... or am I wrong?

Actually, the more I read I think you CAN do that.

Afterall.....your MM account IS an Apple ID.....it's just not an Apple ID you use to make purchases.

I've been reading through this old thread:

I'm in a similar situation. I have an old appleID that I use for iTunes/appstore purchases and a me.com email address.

    I want to merge them.

    It's addressed very well here:

    http://garybacon.com/post/merge-apple-ids-for-icloud-to-just-work/

I sure hope that I will be able to export my me.com data into my "real" appleID as described by androidphone above.

i have an old gmail account i used for purchases. i use me.com for email now since about 2 years ago.

i signed up for icloud and used my me account.

what i have been doing over the past few months is only purchase apps through my me.com account. i figure this way my gmail account will slowly have no use on my iphone. when there is an update for an app, the phone will automatically ask for my gmail pw. i think this is the easiest way to get around this so far.

i have also deleted a couple gmail apps that were for free and redownloaded them using me so any updates would come through me account. icloud works great so far and i love the online layout!

Hmm. I think I'd be more likely to abandon my me.com address and just export the calendars and use the desktop mail app to migrate the emails if needed. I have probably several hundred purchased iTunes songs and 50 or so apps on my iPhone. All associated with my first appleID. I'm hoping apple will come through with a way to merge...

After reading tons of sites.....I'm still torn. Does anyone know this:

My wife and I share one Apple ID for purchases between our devices, but we each have a MM account for individual syncing.

We only have 1 iTunes library.....mine on my Mac.

I plan on getting iTunes Match when it's available.

How's that all going to work? Wouldn't we both need our own iCloud accounts....but at the same time, if we did that, then she wouldn't have access to my iTunes Match?!?

Apple really isn't making this easy are they. The really need to come up with iTunes accounts where you can specify multiple addresses so they share apps/purchases, but get their own storage, syncing, backups, etc.

OK I am still a bit confused here.

    - My iTunes store appleID to purchase music/apps/books is my.name@personaldomain.com, this is also an email I use for work emails
    - My MobileMe which I use for Contacts/Calendars and Personal email is my.name@me.com

When iCloud comes along, I want to keep that me address obviously as I use it for personal emailing, so will be migrating my account to iCloud. This means my iCloud login will be my @me address.
How will this affect all my purchases? Will they still sync etc? Same with backups and stuff like that. This is all very confusing!

According to what this person says in this post:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showpost.php?p=13129725&postcount=35

You would continue exactly like you do today.....only difference is instead of it being called a MM account, it's an iCloud account.

You would still use your Apple ID to make purchases and the iCloud account for everything else.

    I'm guessing :D
