I’m a little confused. So messages in the cloud syncs my messages across my devices. But only the devices using the same mobile number/email for messages?? I ask because my wife’s iPhone is logged into my iCloud as we like to share photos using photo stream. But obviously her messages use a different mobile/email. Her texts won’t sync onto my phone right?? That would be a nightmare as she literally has thousands of texts from many years ago!

Best to never share Apple IDs. Use shared iOS Photo albums or family sharing or Google Photos or Amazon Photos or something... you're using iCloud wrong.

It's not "syncing", it's simply copying amongst the devices. A true sync would mean if you delete a message from your iPhone, it will disappear from Messages on other iOS devices as well as any Apple computers you use. It does NOT do that today .... and it sucks.
[doublepost=1516834131][/doublepost] The other devices need to support the feature as well. It appears that the current betas of macOS do not (yet). I have 10.13.3 at the moment but I now see that 10.13.4, Dev Beta 1 is available. No 'changelog' seems to be available at the moment but I'm guessing it adds support.

Saw a screenshot from another user and can confirm that Messages/iCloud syncing is back on macOS.

Has anyone confirmed that this feature is actually working? Whether you call it syncing, or copying. Nothing is happening between my iPad and my iPhone. None of the messages on my iPhone seem to show up on any other device I’m signed into.

I created a program that imports all my iMessages into Day One (a journaling app) and then back that up in crazy ways.. cause the thought of losing some of the messages from people that have passed on.. it kills me. Thats all I have from some of them.

Please say this is available somewhere? I would love this exact feature.

This is probably not part of the initial release of iMessage for iCloud, but what I'd personally like to see is a way to archive or hide message chats instead of just deleting them. I'm probably the only one that would like this feature, though, so I doubt we'll ever see it.

Great, it didn't just disappear like the FaceTime open standard! Now my iPhone X will have 80.1GB of 256GB used instead of the 82.4GB of 256GB used currently. Can't wait!

On the Mac, it's in the preferences section of the messages app. Not in Sys pref iCloud section. Like on the iPhone and the iPad. Yeah I know real consistent.
I will look again. I remember it there last time it was an option but didn’t see it today.

Account tab, got it.

Why the hell would you want to keep your messages for ten years? Don't understand this. I delete all my messages daily.
I understand that way less than never deleting messages.... so point being: different strokes for different folks ;)

Actually it isn’t copying them right now. As I understand it the way it works is when a device sends a message it asks Apple for a list of devices you receive Messages on. Along with this list it gets a public encryption key for each device. It then creates a message for each device. It sends that encrypted message to Apples servers. Your devices then query for new messages from it from Apple’s server. This is why you can get a flood of old messages when you use a device that has been shut off for a while.

I’m not sure how text messages (not Messsages) syncing. I assume what happens is something like the same thing. Your phone gets a text and then it creates a Message for each of your devices.

When will there be a solution for Apple watch? We still have to manually delete messages on there and they can add up

Sorry if this was discussed above.

How secure is the iCloud Messages feature? In other words, can someone at Apple read my messages? Can the government compel Apple to hand over my messages in a readable format?

"Messages in the Cloud is automatically enabled for users who have two-factor authentication and iCloud Backup enabled, says Apple."
Couldn't be more wrong.
Yup. I got the same screen as above only with a Continue button instead of Use iCloud/Not Now leading me to think it was automatically enabled. It wasn’t. Had to turn it on in iCloud settings myself.

Interesting. For the same reason people want this, I don't. Cant recall how many times I've deleted whole threads only to want to retrieve something from it and thought I couldn't but then remembered it also sent to my iPad or MacBook pro. Probably a feature I wont be using. Currently works perfect for me.
Well then you certainly don't have to. It's just an option for those that do find the need and want.

Since the actual syncing doesn't appear to work yet, I wonder if it's related to it not being in the 'iCloud' settings of System Preferences (on computers) ? Even on my iPhone, it asked if I wanted to enable it and I said 'yes', but in the iCloud menu on my iPhone, it wasn't toggled on.

Yes, just like how it got there in the first place.
[doublepost=1516824519][/doublepost]
Now THAT would be cool if they did!

What about setting up as new? Ever done that?!
Yes. And learning occurred ;)

Don't feel like sifting through 8 pages...so...once enabled, will this sync messages to iCloud.com as well (I don't see a link for Messages yet) so I can access on a PC? Otherwise, I don't see the point in this as Continuity already accomplished this?

I think the feature is there. But it hasn’t started syncing on my devices. Just been waiting for it to happen. Odd also that before you had a way to manually force it to sync. And that option isn’t there.

I do remember when it was first rolled out, before it was pulled, that it took forever for it to sync. And for my messages to show up on other devices. Even a manual sync didn’t seem to make it work. And then one day out of the blue, poof, it began working by itself.
