iCloud Photo Library vs Photo Stream

Question;

I have about 5000 pictures on iPhoto on my Mac, now that I'm using the 200 gb iCloud Drive plan, I would like to be able to see them all on all my iOS devices. How do I send them to iCloud photo library? Do I drag them all from the library section on iPhoto to the photo stream section? And have them upload? I understand videos will sync too but not on iPhoto until 2015.

ps; is iCloud photo library even available yet? theres supposed to be an option under photos on iOS settings; "Optimize iPhone Storage" which i don't see.

This got messier than I thought it would be.

You can't until iCloud Photo Library is available on all your devices. Dragging them to Photostream will only upload the last 1000.

Thanks all the input here. I have read through this thread (and some others) and would someone please confirm the following:

1. The iCPL is for sync but not backup of my iphone photos (That is, when I delete one photo in my iphone, the same photo would be removed from iCPL), right?

2. Could I retrieve one single photo from iCPL? Or is it the same as iOS7, in which I can only restore the whole icloud backup to my iphone?

Thanks a lot!

I don't think photo stream was meant to be a long-term storage. It was basically an easy way to transfer newly taken photos from one device to another. It even worked for copying photos to iPhoto on a Mac.

The issue was that previously stored photos are gone... so all the pics from my wife's device are no longer on my phone (they are apparently not backed up when you do a full iTunes backup). Sounds like we'll have to enable iCloud photo library to get that back.

One huge problem with photostream is that it didn't store videos. I hope this changes. I can't wait for the new Mac photos app so I never have to plug in my phone to the Mac again.

The shared photo streams do allow sharing videos, but they aren't automatically uploaded.

iCloud Photo Library vs Photo Stream

You can still share photos with shared photo streams. iPhoto for iOS is obsolete. It was purely an editing tool which has now been integrated into the Photos app.

Thank you. I am still stumped as to where the shared albums went. I sent myself a test album several times to my Outloook account.
The email never arrived, even with the invite enabled.
I also did the same with my Gmail address, I got the invite.
But the subscribe link would not let me view the album.

Agreed, hopefully iCloud Drive brings some changes to iCloud.

Good questions. I'm curious on this too :)
