My main domain (Google workspace) is currently hosting my whole family (wife + 2 kids) and my 2 parents (on separate Apple family). For now I don't want to mess with migrating everyone.

I decided to try with an unused domain I have. I got it set up in Namecheap relatively quickly. I'm able to receive emails and send emails via beta.icloud.com however on my iPhone/iPad, I'm not able to send from the new email domain.. it simply doesn't show as an option either. I've tried numerous reboots as well as turning icloud mail off and on again.

I'm on the latest beta (as of today) on both devices as well. Seems like I'm not the only one. Glad I haven't moved my primary domain yet! That said... I'm excited as this will be the final step in de-googling my life.

You need to install iOS 15 Beta to be able to send from you device. Only from beta.icloud.com if you don't want to install the beta.

It took a while for me (and a couple of iPad reboots) for 2 of the 3 domains to show up in iOS mail.

I receive my e-mails in iCloud for the custom domain after the initial setup in the beta.icloud.com site, but I can't send from my devices. Do you need to be on the beta software to send via the new custom domain ?

I love the idea and I would use it but I will wait and see what others think. I mean I am no great fan of Gmail but I put my domain through there, costs me £12 per month but never had a single issue with delivery, spam or anything else.

W/r/t sending from newly added address...

I can send to it fine. Not running any of the (other) beta SW. But beta.icloud.com/mail doesn't offer the new address at all as a place from which to send. I don't see anywhere to ask it to add.

Yes, Beta. Maybe things will catch up soon.

Hopefully, this will be more than just mail forwarding. If not running beta software, that's all it is at the moment, 'twould appear.

you buy your own domain name somewhere. lets say tonyc28.com.
you host some email account with this domain.
you can now add this domain name in your iCloud account and received/send email with this domain name. but only you and your family (sharing) will be able to use this domain name.
OK but what is the advantage over just adding that domain's email to my Mail accounts? Just that they'd all be mixed together and share mail folders instead of separate (not sure that's an advantage at all actually)? Trying to understand what the point of this is but it's escaping me.

Anyone figure out how to get this to work with Family Members? I tried to log into the beta site as my wife and the Manage Domain email times out. Does she need to be on the iOS beta also?

You can filter emails into folders based on the to address if you are looking to put your emails into different folders.

For some it's working w/o beta software... for some from the iCloud beta interface... for some not at all.

Same happens here. Just loads for a while and then displays a red error message.

Good to know, thank you. Significantly cheaper than Fastmail. The only drawback I can see is that it doesn't support Apple's proprietary push e-mail mechanism where Fastmail does.
I think it does, it's just an IMAP feature I beliefe. Been using it for a few domains and never noticed it not working.

From my understanding is a complicated thing. The iOS Mail App doesn’t support the IMAP IDLE command that would usually be used for push email. Apparently due to battery life.

There’s an Apple proprietary push feature in the mail app that can be implemented server-side but requires assistance from Apple. Fastmail have a support page about it and the help they received from Apple but there’s no mention of it from Namecheap/Private email. It looks more like their higher tiers support push via ActiveSync.

Not a dealbreaker but I’d rather not have my emails fetched every 15 minutes.

Have folks had any luck with email addresses that end in top-level domains that are more than three letters (like @domainname.email)? I tried adding one and the system said it was an invalid email address. I also tried adding the email address as an additional address for my Apple ID and it said the same thing.
I got a dot info to work.

I'm surprised they went through the effort of building this, I feel the intersection of people that know how to update DNS records on a domain and the people that want to use iCloud for email is extremely small.

I'd consider it if it wasn't so heavily tied into the Apple ID system - you can't add anyone to your domain email outside of your iCloud "family".

Big fan of custom domain email myself, and wished for years that iCloud was a possible hosting option. But agreed, at this point in time, I can’t see the intersection of a venn diagram being that large. Right off the bat that it has to be shared with those in your family cuts it even smaller.

Excellent, thanks! Am testing with a secondary domain and it is working so far.
Argh! I can't get my email address to work. I can get the domain to work, any other email address on that domain to work, another domain to work, but not just the one email address that used to be my username for iCloud / Apple ID. I thought that might be the problem. But, that doesn't make a lot of sense if it's possible to use a current iCloud username as an iCloud email address.

It will take some time for DNS servers to update their caches. Your time-to-live is 15 minutes, not sure what you had on your Google records? You will have to wait at least 15 minutes.
I think I need to wait for some greater replication to happen. It's been two hours but my MX Record search still shows Google.

It's fine, too. Once it goes live I will have more desire to mess with it.
