I had this problem too but then I logged into google domains and there was a message about the dns being messed up and a "fix it" button...I probably messed with someone years ago and forgot about it.
Not sure if this has something to do with that in my case since I'm trying to access the initial setup for the custom email domain on iCloud. Haven't set it up at all yet

Does it let you add it at all, and then it fails the verification?

At first, I couldn't even add it. Now it fails verification. Not sure if a change to my DNS caused that (seems unlikely) or it's because I removed the email as an alternate contact method. It still doesn't work either way.
This may be the last setup of the CNAME as the instructions are a bit contradictory

the last step is in 2 lines the host= and target= need to be separated

so host=1_whatever target=blah.com.

1_whatever is the actual hostname

then blah.com. Is the cname data

Just tried it with a test domain. Few points:

The DNS instructions aren't great. If you don't understand what you're doing you'll probably struggle. I expect Apple will eventually add specific instructions for the most common DNS providers (e.g. GoDaddy, Namecheap, etc.)

There's no option for a catch all. You must add individual aliases.

It seems to have issues adding e-mail aliases with fewer than three characters. aaa@mydomain.com is fine. aa@mydomain.com is a no-go.

If you're not currently using the domain for e-mail don't bother adding the e-mail addresses during the initial setup. It'll ask you to respond to a verification e-mail sent to the address you're adding. Obviously you won't receive these messages. Skip that section and move on to the DNS settings.

are you planning on moving from GWS to icloud? I'm thinking about it.
I am. I only went back to Google because I set it up in 2008 so I was grandfathered in and didn't have to pay for anything. I ran my own server from around 2011-2020 but it was going to cost me because of some datacenter changes so I moved back to GMail grudgingly. I just need to figure out a few things. I have a group/distribution list email address and need to decide how to proceed with that.

I can add any email address with this domain except one--the one that used to be my iCloud username. I used to log in with "firstname@lastname.com" to iCloud, before switching to "lastname@icloud.com" as my username. The only address I cannot add is firstname@lastname.com, which has been my primary personal email address for years. I think these things are connected as, even though Apple allows you to change your iCloud username, it seems to cause weird problems down the line.

I have 3 email accounts in Fastmail with my domain, iCloud wouldn't let me set up one so guessing it's because my son uses it for his iCloud / Apple ID.
Wouldn’t your son lose access to his email account once your donain’s mx record points to apple’s servers? From now on all mail for that domain goes to Apple but if you can’t set up his address on the Apple server any mail to his address will be undeliverable, including any iCloud account recovery emails. I wonder if he can add that address to his own account if you’re part of the same iCloud family.

Didn't even get to the verify part, came up with an error on adding it.

This is why I reverted back to Fastmail.

I would wait until the product is ready before migrating my domain to iCloud. I do not want to risk not receiving important mails, even if I know that I could easily revert the DNS changes to point to my current provider. DNS changes take time to propagate and there is no reason for me to try the beta.

It can't already be an Apple ID? So I can't get a new domain, get it set u,p and then have one of it's email address take over my Store Apple ID's email? drat. I was hoping I could finally consolidate things onto one Apple ID but I guess I have to forever remain split between an Apple ID for Apps/Media and One Apple ID for iCloud. How annoying that it is 2021 and Apple either can't or refuses to figure out how to merge them.

Are DKIM and SPF supported?
Also, no catch-all -> Bummer
Yes they are. And possibly required.

Once you've added the DNS records Apple are doing a quick verification on them. I didn't actually try to complete verification without adding the required records but I presume it'd fail.

So I setup my little used "company" name and all seems well. So far the only issue I see is that Outlook (my prime email app) doesn't have the "new" outgoing name available. Incoming works OK. When I tried Apple's Mail ... the alternative outgoing address is available. I suspect MS will need to do something to make that part work. Setup at GoDaddy was pretty straightforward.

Pretty convenient ... and for folks who have been paying extra for email hosting, this will be a $$ saver (assuming you have a reason for iCloud+ anyway ....).

So if I own jadedmonkey.com, I could add an email me@jadedmonkey.com and it would work without me having to pay any extra for hosting? Or is this purely a mail forwarding and I still have to find a place to host my email?

You still have to pay for your domain from your host. You have to use a pre-existing email address during set up.

You will then get a verification email to that address. You then change the settings at your domain host so that your email will be handled by iCloud instead of your host.

First part is true, but the e-mail address doesn't have to be one you already use. You can skip the verification step and add the required e-mail address later.

hmm let me try...but it makes no sense because you have to change the settings at your domain host anyway so that iCloud will handle the email.

Well, I just set it up using a domain that previously had no MX records or e-mail services.

Pretty hard to do that if you have to verify the e-mail addresses before you point the MX records at Apple's servers don't you think... ;)

Wasn’t expecting the 5 domains. This is seriously amazing. I’ve had a paid email server for 20 years and was at first excited about using iCloud but thought I’d have to keep my server because I use a few email domains. Having 5 domains is more than enough.
