This may be the last setup of the CNAME as the instructions are a bit contradictory

the last step is in 2 lines the host= and target= need to be separated

so host=1_whatever target=blah.com.

1_whatever is the actual hostname

then blah.com. Is the cname data
Thanks, this works, also my macos promoted "do you wanna use myemail@mycustomdomain.xyz for facetime etc..."

but how to setup this account for native mail clients via imap?

imap, smtp server addresses?

ok, does anyone have info on moving from a custom domain on google (Google Workspace) it's now called to icloud+?
Hey,

If you mean how to update the DNS records on your custom domain on google domains, then yeah I just did mine earlier today. You need to go to Google Domains. Then manage > DNS >Manage custom records. create 2 MX records. Keep in mind you need to put a priority number before iCloud MX records. For example, 10 mx01.mail.icloud.com. Then create 2 TXT records. Finally the CNAME. iCloud gives you a host and a value which you need to paste in their own fields. It will take a couple of minutes to apply over at their servers.

I've been waiting for this feature for a long time. But, now that it's here, I'm hesitant to move from Google Workspace because GMail and GCal are undeniably powerful. I understand the custom domain for emails functionality but I'm confused about what will happen with other hosted features that I use, namely calendar.

Does anyone know whether this custom domain feature will give me calendar functionality or do I still need to use Google for that?

Well, I just set it up using a domain that previously had no MX records or e-mail services.

Pretty hard to do that if you have to verify the e-mail addresses before you point the MX records at Apple's servers don't you think... ;)

You mean you just added a domain to the settings box. I can do that too, including domains I don't own that are owned by someone. That's different from actually setting up a domain.

There seems to be a flaw here. We shouldn't be able to add domains without registering one.

Looks like you already have to own the domain which is a bit of a pain as it's a minefield.
They look like they are cheap and easy but at each step you end up paying a bit more: registration, anti spam, database ad-guard etc etc until you realise you are actually paying quite a lot and when you come to renew the prices can turn out to be horrendous because in fact they were all special introductory prices.

I was rather hoping they were going to supply them and make the whole process transparent and easy.
Not so useful then to most private customers.
Lol of course you have to own the domain.

It works great! I finally don't have a delay in getting my email notifications in the stock mail app. I was using GSuite til now.

Anyone having issues using Namecheap? I've followed all directions from the email and via Apple's support document, but every time I try to validate through iCloud I get a message telling me to check my MX records. I've deleted and added 3 times now, copy and pasting exactly from my email.

No, I think you're misunderstanding.

Obviously, you should only be able to add domains you own. Step 4 does a verification on the DNS records.

But you said:

email has to be one that you already use with another email provider.

And this bit isn't quite true. The domain you're adding does not have to be in use with another e-mail provider. It can have no e-mail provider at all. That's why Step 2 can be skipped.

If there is a flaw in the process, it's that you CAN add domains to your Apple ID that you don't own, as long as the domain's DNS settings point towards Apple. For example, I could change my domain's DNS records right now and, if I don't add it to my Apple ID, you can add it to yours. Usually, there would be an additional mandatory verification step such as adding a very specific TXT record into DNS.

No, worked fine for me.

If you want to PM me your domain name I'm happy to have a look at them for you.

Took some going but got it working. Can’t see how to send from the address though

Use your Apple ID as credentials.

thanks, does it actually work for you with custom domain?

i understand this to setup in macos mail like:

email adress: mycustom@domain.xyz
username: appleid
password appleidpassword/app specific password

it doesnt seem to work for me, try app appleid username, empty username, custom email as username, specific password, appleid password in various combinations

otherwise my dns setup should be correct, since i can sent and recieve via the beta apple webmail client

You might have existing MX records to delete.

I've only had the domain parked at Namecheap while building out my site. Been waiting on this feature to become available so these are my first MX records for this domain.

I can use this to get rid of a Rackspace account. Great next step would be if mail.app rules could be applied at the server level instead of only on mac mail.

In MacOS mail, all you need to do is have your iCloud Account/Apple ID enabled for Mail within System Preferences. Mail sent to your custom domain will arrive in your iCloud Inbox.

Just tick the box for Mail.

For mine, the new outgoing email option appeared automatically in Apple Mail as an option. No need to "add" another account at all. I did find that on the beta.icloud.com site, go to the Mail page and there's a little gear at the top of the left column. There I could update the "send as" line to look better. Clearly this is in beta as it was glitchy for me, but it finally worked.

FWIW - the new outgoing email option also appeared on my iPhone with no action on my part at all. Certainly didn't "add" any new accounts ... it just worked!!:)

As I mentioned before, Outlook does not provide me the new outgoing email address yet. I suspect the same may be true for other 3rd party email clients. They'll probably need to do something to make them work. Incoming mail works fine in OL.

Hmm, tempting to move my two domains over from Microsoft 365. They just increased their pricing, and their arguments are that it now includes Microsft Teams for free. Well, I only use it for hosting my e-mail and calendar.

The thing holding me back are such details as DKIM, DMARC and SPF. Are security features like these supported? What does Apple use for keeping things syncronised between devices in a efficient manner?

I tested Google Workplace, Fastmail and various others before landing on Hosted-Exchange/Office365/Microsoft 365 for the simple fact that Microsoft with Exchange ActiveSync was much better compared to IMAP, at least when I tested like 8 years ago. With Exchange ActiveSync notifications arrives on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Windows PC simultaneously and once I have read a e-mail on one device the notification gets cleared instantaneously on all devices.

When testing Google Workplace, Fastmail etc that was using IMAP it wasn't simultaneous at all. My Mac might receive a new e-mail and notification several minutes before it was ever showing on any of my other devices and vice versa. It was the same when I mark a e-mail as read. It could take what felt like forever until my other devices registered this change so it would still look like the e-mail was unread for ages on my other devices.

With Exchange ActiveSync all of this worked out ten times better. I supposed IMAP has improved over the years and I expect Apple to at least make sure that all of this works flawlessly when using Apple Mail as the mail application. But I'm still sceptical, I suppose I should just purchase a cheap test domain and test it out to see how it works before moving any of my domains.

Its literally $9/yr for most places. Who the hell pays for anti-spam and ad-guards? Sounds like you like falling for the scams shady registrars like to try to pile on at checkout

If you can get an e-mail service with custom domain support for $9 a year I'd love to know where please!
