Yes you can, you just have to use the icloud account associated with that Apple ID me@mydomain.com. You can’t add mydomain.com as a custom domain to another Apple ID/icloud account and use me@mydomain.com as an address.

I’ve had to do exactly that since me@mydomain.com was an Apple ID I had for decades but my primary icloud environment was me@icloud.com. I set up icloud mail at the old me@mydomain.com Apple ID, then made that part of me@icloud.com’s family. It actually works out better since my me@mydomain.com email comes into a separate inbox from my icloud email.

The insanity is that Apple won’t let you delete old unused Apple ID’s or combine them so you HAVE to do as above. Even if you delete the old me@mydomain.com Apple ID (DON’T), you’re forever barred from using that email as a custom email or another Apple ID.

It’s very easy to get yourself in a catch 22 since Apple will let you add mydomain.com to your primary icloud account. You can set up any xxx@mydomain.com emails but as soon as you try to use the old me@mydomain.com, it won’t let you add what is probably the ONE address you Really need.

I went through hell getting this sorted.
So let's say I have me@mydomain1.com which is it's own Apple ID (same apple ID as the email address that I'm using) and then I have me@mydomain2.com - which also is a separate Apple ID currently but I want to use that domain with iCloud+ (but I only have iCloud+ on mydomain1.com so I want to add mydomain2.com in here) - also for consolidation purposes I'd rather have all my domain emails in one iCloud account. Is this even possible to do since I already had created another Apple ID with me@mydomain2.com? I thought about deleting this Apple ID but noticed you said NOT to do that. I simply just want to add a domain that I own into mydomain1.com's iCloud account but it isn't letting me since it's already registered to an Apple ID. I don't pay for iCloud on that Apple ID so I can't just set it up there (and even if I could it would be annoying to have a separate inbox for this one). Also, I don't want to add it as a family sharing account because that seems unnecessary. Is there any way to do this? Seems crazy that Apple wouldn't allow a way to make this easier - I would have never created an AppleID on this other domain if I knew this was going to be the case...

I completly agree with your feelings on the second domain. It’s nuts but that is the Apple situation. Once you have an email as an Apple ID is is FOREVER an APPLE ID. Even if you delete that Apple ID, Apple will never allow you to use that email as an Apple ID again. You also can not combine multiple Apple ID’s into one account. This kinda had some justification BEFORE they invented the iCloud+ email and it just applied to Apple ID’s being used as Apple store accounts, iTunes accounts, etc. But they have kept the same rules, so it is impossible to add your second domain to your icloud+ email of the other account with domain 1 in it.

Edit: I should make it clear that you could have ME@domain1.com and MYSELF@domain2.com in the one iCloud+ email accout, provided you never used MYSELF@domain2.com as an Apple ID. It is the full email address that is being restricted, not the domain2.com

Okay I'm a little confused here.......

For the last 5 years I've used my me@mydomain.com as my Apple ID, which I changed from my original me@icloud.com ID. Whilst using me@mydomain.com I set up my custom email domain using @mydomain.com and added I added in two email addresses; me@mydomain.com & wife@mydomain.com. This has all been created with no problems.

It should be noted I've yet to set up the DNS records as I'm still in the process of migrating data over from @mydomain.com to @icloud.com.

However it looks like I have been able to add in to the system the me@mydomain.com address which had been used as my Apple ID.

Or was this allowed as my original Apple ID was me@icloud.com and not me@mydomain.com?

This is fine and was already working all over the time. During the beta testing I already had on the first release day this setup.

Only case that it won’t work is when the me@domain.com was set up to another dedicated iCloud account. As far it is the same you‘re currently signed in, it doesn’t matter

Adding to this chain: I had multiple emails from different providers for different iTunes accounts as I’ve had - for different reasons, mainly travel and using local mobile services - to create various iTunes accounts in the past.

With Google no longer keeping a free service for personal domains though, it was time to migrate my personal domain accounts to iCloud+, which meant either eliminating or migrating those other iTunes accounts.

Deleting an iTunes account (or iCloud) is a pain because it takes Apple years to finally clear a used email address just in case a customer decides to go back on the decision or whatever relevant local commercial legislation applies on preserving old accounts for x amount of time. I had this conversation with them years ago…

Buuut, what they do let you do is change the username of the account to a different email. So while I had used my personal domain accounts to make iTunes accounts for separate countries and would no longer be able to do so by bringing those personal domain accounts under my primary iCloud+ account, what I COULD do was switch them prior to iCloud+ conversion over to my personal accounts elsewhere (old accounts on services like live.com (this one does aliases btw), yahoo, etc). So ok, not a solution for bringing those iTunes/iCloud accounts under one umbrella account (my iCloud+ account) for me, but at least I was able to sort it out. And yes it was insane ?

Hi I've added my custom email domain yesterday and everything is working as expected for my account. However it doesn't work for any family members. I've setup the domain for family sharing and all family members do see the domain that I've setup but the moment they click on the domain to add their own email they all get the following error "There was a problem with loading the domain. Please try again later."

I'm not entirely sure what could be wrong but I'm hoping someone here has an idea or similar experience that they were able to resolve.

What's weird is that my wife can't add her email like the others but her Apple ID is on they newly added domain and that mail is working just fine even though we didn't explicitly added it, some magic happened behind the scenes.

Any thoughts?

I think you have the problem I had initially. When setting up the custom domain you have the choice of a single or family domain. If choosing a single domain you can only add in your email address. If you choose that you can't add in other members at all (from what I could tell).
If you choose the family option you have to set up all the family addresses you want to use at that point (make a list) when you add all the addresses in the system then sends an email to each address (which the users have to accept and validate) they are then added in to the system.
As I chose the single system first I had to delete the custom domain and start over. I hope this helps.

I don’t think that’s what happening in my case. I did choose the family option and when a member logs in to iCloud it does say that the custom domain is shared by me which is correct. Only when selecting the custom domain it gives me the error.

Okay so when you log into the custom domain in the iCloud settings can you see all the family email addresses in there?
When I log in as the organiser and check the custom domain I only see my addresses. The members received an email from apple inviting them to add their own mail addresses. When the members log in to the iCloud custom domain settings and click the custom domain the get an error.

So the problem is actually fixed. After an initial chat with support the issue was send to the engineering team. The had me do additional check with safari in a private tab and that seemed to fix the issue altogether. Unless they did something on their end before having me to try it again. I did all my test in a regular browser window on several devices, only thing I did was use a private window for the extra checks. Anyway I’m happy it’s working now even when using none private windows tabs now.
