An icon has been shared on social media this morning that purportedly references Apple's next-generation iPod touch. The image below was shared by self-described tech product leaker Jonathan Mitchell, who claims to have unearthed the icon in iOS 12.2 Beta 4.

I was doing some coding in iOS 12.2 Beta 4. I cracked this here on what a new iPod touch 7th generation could look like. HLipod is the 6th generation HLipod2 is a unreleased generation. *Notice no home button and it looks to be a full screen display.* @OnLeaks @stroughtonsmith pic.twitter.com/pXLzif5JMZ - Johnathan Mitchell (@jaymit2090tx13) March 8, 2019

The icon labeled "HLSipod2" on the right is shown beside the existing icon for Apple's current-generation iPod touch, suggesting that an unreleased seventh-generation iPod touch will inherit the design elements of Apple's flagship all-screen iPhones and do away with the Home button.

That said, the device in the icon doesn't have a notch and it also appears to be off-center, which could mean that it's being used by Apple as a placeholder in the iOS 12 beta. Either that, or it's not genuine at all.

In January, developer Steven Troughton-Smith discovered references in iOS 12.2 to an "iPod 9,1," which does not match up with any known iPod touch devices, suggesting it is a new next-generation model. However, the iPod listing in iOS 12.2 does not appear to have Face ID or Touch ID.

Last month, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said he expects a new iPod touch with a faster processor to launch in 2019, but Kuo made no mention of a possible redesign for the device.

Apple last updated the iPod touch in July 2015, and in July 2017 the company cut prices and reduced the number of storage capacity options.

Update: Developer and frequent iOS beta explorer Guilherme Rambo says "there is no such icon on iOS."

Second iOS device without a notch (yes, I hear you, no reason to have one)!
Too bad I have zero interest on this one.
The third one would be iPhone :).

Would be interesting if they put an under screen Touch ID on the iPod to try it out.. that would enable them to later bring it back to iPhone.. I can’t imagine them bringing an exciting new design like a hole punch approach to iPod first before introducing it on iPhone. But who knows?
anyway, exciting news.

That would be weird to have the iPod refreshed and even weirder to be all screen. And iPod with much better looking than the entry level iPhone 7?

You should stop browsing mac "rumors" ;) if you don't want spoilers.

There were rumors before, but they were just rumors, and pure guesses. Today, whole device is presented in details months before the event.

Not trying to be dismissive, but Perhaps don’t frequent a tech site that regularly reports rumors and leaks, You’re element of surprise can be fulfilled.

MacRumors is not the only reporting the rumors. I would have to stop reading the tech news completely.

So long as it brings my scroll wheel back I'll be happy.

I'd love an updated iPod Classic. "iPod Glass: A single piece of smoked glass housing small screen and upgraded scroll wheel, lightning connector, bluetooth....I can dream

Ok, so Apple is doing some R&D and production ramp up before releasing a similar sized iPhone (SE2????)

Or make it work in cellular the same way as the Apple Watch 3/4 and connect it to your own iPhone by scanning a barcode, so you can make calls or receive calls.

They will compensate for that by making the iPod really expensive!

Very interesting and surprising. I was hoping for a bigger screen and overall size, but didn’t ever think it would be edge to edge. Shame, I like bezels personally. Also would have loved Touch ID.

Why do you like scrollwheel better than touch screen?

I would have said it's a placeholder to avoid revealing the design, but if that was the case, they'd just use the existing icon.

Interesting...

If this had and OLED at least the size of the XS Max display I'd be all over this. Would fit in perfect with my Android phone + Apple watch + MBP setup.
